I went and visited your cemetery pages and I think you did a wonderful job. My hat is off to you for copying these cemeteries. I did note in the James Noble cemetery that Elishamar Noble has the wrong death date. I'm thinking that it should be 1999? Row 1 1. BTW, I want to thank you again for the moving speech on my great grandfather, Nicholas "Shanghai Nick" Combs's, stay at the prison camp in Maryland at the cermony on his Civil War headstone at the Olinger Cemetery over at Zoe, in Lee Co. back in 2001 (I think). The things you told us in the group about the hardships he endured while in the prison camps burned into my mind. Thank you for educating me about that noble, yet horrible, part of his life. Thanks Karen, but the Old Strong Burying Ground is not listed; it is located in the vicinity of Whick. There is a Strong Cemetery listed, but that is a different cemetery. Hi, Could anyone tell me exactly the location of the Old Strong Burying Ground in Whick? Longitude or latitude would also be great. Appreciate any help. Monty Reed

Delilia Duff is married to Asberry Combs in 1920 Breathitt Asberry Combs 31 Delilah 30 Maude 8 Millie 6 Joe 5 fits the age of Buell probably a middle name? Margaret 4 Leslie 1 Yvonne
In a message dated 4/21/2004 8:25:07 PM Central Standard Time, acmc@insightbb.com writes: On the 1930 census, it shows Clinton married to Delila but they have a house full of children. Millie, 17 Buell, 15 Margaret, 13 Leslie, 11 America, 9 and two younger children which are prob. his and Delila's: Cara/Cora 4 and George 3. Delilah Duff Combs was the mother of Cora and George. I found Millie, Buell, Leslie, in birth records, listed as Combs. They are obviously from her first marriage. There was also a Maude b. 1911 who was a Combs. I did not find Margaret or America but would assume they were Combs kids also, at least Margaret for sure. Check the 1920 census for Delilah when she was married to the Combs and those Combs kids will probably show up with Delilah and her Combs husband. I would be glad to look at 1920 if I knew the name of the Combs she was married to prior to Clinton Centers. Yvonne
How old was this Delia? Could they be her children from a previous marriage? Or could this just be another example of how the census takers got something wrong? Perhaps there are other sorts of records that may shed a light, such as birth, death and marriage records of those children. Elizabeth
I am very confused about this man and his family. His first marriage was to a Rosa Miller...they married about 1919 in Breathitt county. His second marriage was supposedly to Delila/Delilah Duff Combs in 1924 at Clayhole. On the 1920 census, it shows a Clint and his 15 year old wife, Rosa. On the 1930 census, it shows Clinton married to Delila but they have a house full of children. Millie, 17 Buell, 15 Margaret, 13 Leslie, 11 America, 9 and two younger children which are prob. his and Delila's: Cara/Cora 4 and George 3. Whose children are the other five older ones? Can someone help? They are listed on the census as sons and daughters. There were several other children in Clinton's family...his parents were James and Armina Barnett Centers...could they be nieces and nephews? Some of Delila's kin? marilyn acmc@insightbb.com

Hi List, I am trying to find information on Oliver & Rebecca Tharp that settled in Breathitt after leaving TN. Any information would be appreciated. Have a great day! Pat
I'm looking for the family of Mattie Hill Forbes. She was born in 1878 Beattyville, Lee Co., KY and in 1963 at her twin sister Abbie Hill Wilson's death (lived in Breathitt), she was said to be living in Charlestown, IN. Who was her husband? Did she marry in KY? Was her husband from the area? Children? Any help appreciated. John and Marge Schulke Leesburg, Florida (>"""<) (="o"=) (,,)=(,,)

The following was located in the files of the Breathitt County Library: The Jackson Times August 1, 1946, page 1 ******************************************** Murder Charges Are Dismissed At Hearing At a hearing before County Judge Ed T. Deaton last Monday, charges of murder lodged against Dr. J. L. Potter and Neal Hensley in connection with the death of Mrs. Ressie Large of Rousseau were dismissed without prejudice upon motion of County Attorney Roscoe C. The following was located in the files of the Breathitt County Library: The Jackson Times July 4, 1946, page 1 ******************************************** Bonds Allowed Two Held on Murder Warrants July 15 set as date of examining trial for defendants Dr. J. L. Potter and Neal Hensley, both of Jackson, were released on appearance bonds of $5,000 each when brought before County Judge Ed T. Deaton Friday. The two were arrested two days earlier by Sheriff G. L. Allen, on suspicion after the body of Mrs. Ressie Large had been found on Highway 15 about six miles from Jackson. Following the arrest of Dr. Potter and the Hensley woman, a warrant charging wilfull murder was sworn to by Crate Large, husband of the dead woman. Examining trials of the two accused, will be held before Judge Deaton, July 15. The body of Mrs. Large was discovered by a truck driver early in the morning of June 25, lying in the road near Kragon. The man, giving his name as a Mr. Napier, came to Jackson and notified Sheriff Allen, who went to the scene, about 3:15 a.m. A verdict that the woman had been struck by a car and killed, was returned by a coroner's jury, but later, local officials had a further examination made by a local physician which disclosed numerous cuts about the abdomen and other parts of the body, evidently made by a sharp instrument, the officials stated. When questioned by Sheriff Allen, Dr. Potter and the Hensley woman stated that they had seen the Large woman at a cabin not far from where her body was found, a short time prior to the discovery of her body on the highway. Assisting in the investigation which was conducted by local officials were County Attorney, Roscoe C. Back, Commonwealth's Attorney, Earl R. Cooper and Sheriff Allen. Finger prints were made of the car belonging to Dr. Potter and surrounding near the place where the woman's body was discovered. Results of the investigation are expected to be disclosed at the examining trial which is to be held July 15. **************************** Stephen D. The following was located in the files of the Breathitt County Library: The Jackson Times June 27, 1946, page 1 Killing of Woman on Highway Brings Investigation Coroner's verdict fails to satisfy circumstances officers say County officials are investigating the death of Mrs. Ressie Large, about 28, whose body was discovered on Highway 15 above Kragon early Tuesday morning. A coroner's jury early Tuesday morning returned a verdict of death caused by being struck by an automobile but later developments led officers to believe the woman may have met her death elsewhere and her body placed on the highway. A truck driver, who gave his name as Napier, reported finding the body. Sheriff G. L. Allen was summoned and Napier accompanied him back to the place where he saw the corpse. Allen stated that they reached the scene about 3:15 a.m. Coroner Roger Herald was called later and held the preliminary investigation which resulted in the verdict. While both Sheriff Allen and County Attorney Roscoe C. Back were reluctant to disclose for publication any of the evidence which led them to believe the coroner's verdict in error, it was learned that later examination of the body by Dr. M. E. Hoge, local physician, at the Ray and Blake Funeral Home showed wounds which the doctor expressed belief could not have been cause by a car. Mrs. Large was a daughter of Sherman Large of Rousseau and the wife of Crate Large, also of Rousseau, Sheriff Allen said. On Monday afternoon she was apprehended twice by the sheriff's office on a charge of drunkenness and vagrancy. She was released each time upon request of the arresting officers after she promised to return home. County officers promised release of facts, determined by their investigations as soon as completed.
