    1. Largest Walnut Tree from Letcher County - Joe Hale
    2. Knott Historical Society
    3. April 24, 1903. The largest walnut log ever taken out of the Eastern Kentucky mountain forests has just been taken from Cross Fork of Kentucky river, west of Mayking, overland across the mountains to Jackson, Breathitt county, to the Cincinnati markets. The log was nearly six feet in diameter and sixteen feet long, and it required eight large yoke of oxen to "snake" it over the mountains. It was bought for $1,600 from Joe Hale. Members of the Kentucky World's Fair Association gave Mr. Hale's bid on the tree with the intention of placing it on exhibition at St. Louis in 1904, but their bid of $2,000 was a day too late. ___________________ From Knott County Historical Society's - A Century Ago This Week (1903 Edition) Can anyone help us locate a photo of this log? Anyone related to Joe Hale? Thanks. Sincerely yours, David R. Smith, Pres. Knott County Historical Society, Inc.

    1. First White Man Auctioned in Breathitt Since 1839.
    2. Knott Historical Society
    3. April 17, 1903 The Jackson Hustler says: At 1 o'clock p.m. Wednesday, in front of the courthouse in this city, an event transpired that is without a parallel in the history of this county since its formation, and one that has been but seldom, if ever, witnessed in any community. The incident referred to was the public sale into servitude for a period of six months, for vagrancy, of Bruce Marcum, a young, robust and able-bodied man about twenty-seven years of age. This being the first time a white man (one Negro having been sold for the same cause a few years ago in Breathitt) was ever sold in the county, quite a large and curious throng gathered in front of the courthouse to witness the sale. Berry Turner, of Crockettsville, a Deputy Sheriff, cried him off, and performed the duty with all the skill of a professional auctioneer, calling attention to the health and physical qualifications of a young man, and impressed upon the crowd the value of the young man's labor to the would-be buyers, yet the bidding was rather slow and dull. Marcum was finally sold to Mr. William Griffith, of the Frozen precinct, for $650. The man sold is an only son of Edward Marcum, of this city. Marcum was tried at the March term of the Breathitt Circuit court on a charge of vagrancy and offered no defense. ______________ From Knott County Historical Society's - A Century Ago This Week (1903 Edition) Does anyone have or know where we can obtain a photo of Bruce Marcum? Thanks. David R. Smith, Pres. Knott County Historical Society, Inc.

    3. Appreciate your help, Doy, but the Nancy Fugate I'm looking for was raising her children from 1862 to 1880 in Breathitt Co. Her husband, Henderson Kilburn, was lynched in 1884. 3. Hi Monty, I was intererested in your post. Unfortunately, I doubt that I can help you at all. I have 2 Nancy Fugates in my database. 1) dau of Zachariah and Unity Fugate (he died in Russell Co. VA, after July 1835). I show this Nancy as married to an unknown DORTON. 2) Ann Nancy Fugate, b. ca. 1754 in VA, married Samuel Haddix. Obviously both of these are too early to be yours. But just thought I'd respond. 3. Many thanks, Stephen, for directions to the Strong Burying Ground. Your work on Breathitt genealogy-history is commendable. Keep it up.
