Just a couple of reminders/hints to help slow the spread of the nasty worms that seem to be making the rounds again . . . 1. It's been said before, but bears repeating: Make sure you have a good anti-virus program, and update frequently. 2. Don't open attachments, especially if you are not expecting them. With the current virus, even opening the email will cause the virus to activate, so make sure that you pay attention to what you are opening. Once it's opened, it's too late, and you'll have to clean your system. 3. The viruses are getting smarter - they are appearing as replies to mail list posts, hoping to catch you unaware. 4. Attachments with double extensions (for example, PICS.doc.zpd) are most usually infected. Delete immediately. 5. After you delete an infected email, remember to empty your "trash" so it is truly gone from your system. 6. Many of the viruses are spreading by sending themselves to everyone in your address list or to recipients of unread mail in your mailbox. To slow this, ensure that after you have read your mail, (even if you don't move it out of your inbox), you have "marked" all of the messages as "read". 7. It has been suggested in the past to put a blank entry in your address book as the first entry - put just the "name" in, consisting of symbols and/or numbers, but DO NOT enter an email address. If you should get a virus, this is supposed to slow down the spread, as it can't get past this first entry to continue sending itself out. (I don't know if this really works or not, but it can't hurt, can it?) 8. Remember, be patient, most people that are infected with a virus don't even realize it until someone replies to them (or sends them a separate email message) letting them know about the infection.
