    1. Thomas Jefferson Buckner
    2. Mark & Tammye Hobgood
    3. Hello, I am a newbie, and I am researching the Buckner name and trying to find other descendants of my ggg grandfather Thomas Jefferson Buckner. I believe he was born in KY and his wife was either named Laura Williams or Lucinda Williamson, she was born in TN. I know they had at least two children, Jesse James Buckner (who was also known as J.J. Buckner and James J. Buckner) born January 24,1869 in Caldwell County KY. The other son was Albert Mitchell Buckner born January 18, 1873 also in Caldwell County. For a reason unknown to me, J.J. Buckner was raised in Caldwell County, while A.M. Buckner was raised in TX. J.J. Buckner married Laura Lewis and they had the following children: Minnie, Robert, Weldon, Fred, Jennie, Ruth, Nellie, Maynard, and Jesse Lewis. A.M. Buckner married Mattie Elizabeth Byas and they had the following children: Dellos Urban, Ruby Mae, Marvin Obbie, and Herman Albert. I would greatly appreciate any help with my line of Buckners. Thank you, Tammye Campbell-Hobgood

    3. Robert Knight McCormick was born in Danville, KY in 1911. By age 18 he was working as a copy boy for the old Washington Daily News in Washington, DC. He later went to work for Colliers Magazine and when they refused to send him overseas as a foreign correspondent during WWII, he went to work for NBC. He became the capital reporter on the first NBC-TV nightly news with John Cameron Swayze. We know his mother's name was Maude but have no other genealogical/biographical information about this family. Robert K. McCormick's daughter, Nora, and I are seeking any biographical information we can find as part of a company-sponsored DiversityDay project to see what we can gather in 30 days time. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to all of you genealogy angels. Lila Ashear lashear@sprintmail.com

    1. "Melungeon Roots: A Family Heritage Workshop" Berea College, KY
    2. Kay Martin
    3. Hi Everybody! Some of you on this list may be interested in learning more about a fascinating group of people called Melungeons, especially if your family comes from northeast TN, southeast KY, northwest NC or southwest VA. If you have any questions about the article below, please write to me directly at suni@qni.com. Thanks! -Kay ****** Recent books and documentaries on Appalachia's mysterious Melungeons have led many people to search for their Melungeon roots. A genealogy workshop at Berea College may provide help for those who are seeking information about their families and possible Melungeon connections. "Melungeon Roots: A Family Heritage Workshop" will be held on the Berea College campus on Saturday, June 26. This event will feature sessions on beginning, intermediate, and Internet genealogy, as well as specific sessions to explore Native American and African-American connections. There will also be chat sessions for various family groups, a showing of a documentary film about the Melungeons, and a panel discussion featuring Brent Kennedy, Manuel Mira, and others.. The Melungeons are a multi-racial and multi-ethnic people who were first documented in the Appalachian mountains at the end of the 18th century. Since that time, they have become a part of Appalachian folklore - "sons and daughters of the legend." Prior to the Civil War, some were classified as "free persons of color." More recently, they have been identified by anthropologists and sociologists as "tri-racial isolates" - an amalgam of European, Native American, and African-American ancestry. They faced discrimination, both legal and social, and tended to settle in isolated communities such as Newman's Ridge in Hancock County, Tennessee, or Stone Mountain, Virginia. Over the years, Melungeons kept to themselves -- or moved to other areas where their heritage was not suspect. Oral history among Melungeon families was often not shared with succeeding generations. "Melungeon" had become an epithet, even if no one knew where the word originated. Jean Patterson Bible wrote in 1975 that generations of intermarriage has resulted in near racial dissolution: "They'll be gone in a generation or two, except for an occasional dark-complected [sic] child as a reminder of the past." Instead, many Melungeon descendants are coming to recognize and embrace the diverse heritage that is theirs. They've been encouraged and inspired by Dr. N. Brent Kennedy, author of the 1994 book The Melungeons: The Resurrection of A Proud People; An Untold Story of Ethnic Cleansing in America. Kennedy, in researching his own family background, concludes that the Melungeons were descended from groups of Spaniards, Portuguese, Turks, Berbers, Moors, Jews, and others who arrived on these shores between the arrival of Columbus and the establishment of Jamestown. Generations of intermarriage with Europeans, Native Americans, and African-Americans resulted in the people now known as Melungeons. Participants may pre-register before June 1, for "Melungeon Roots: A Family Heritage Workshop" by sending a check or money order to: Melungeon Roots, P.O. Box 4042, Wise, VA 24293. Admission to the event is $5 for each pre-registered participant (before June 1), and $10 for those who register after June 1 and for on-site registrants. On-site registration begins Friday, June 25, at 7:00 pm at the Alumni Building on the Berea campus. The Melungeon Heritage Association, Inc. will hold a mixer on Friday night at the Alumni Building from 7 to 9 pm. Workshops will begin on Saturday morning at 9:00 am at Phelps-Stokes Hall, with welcoming remarks by Audie Kennedy, president of the Melungeon Heritage Association, Inc., and Gordon McKinney of the Berea College Appalachian Center. Workshops will be held in the Frost Building and Phelps Stokes chapel. Chat groups will be running all day at various locations on campus. Throughout the day, "Melungeon Roots" will feature "how-to" genealogy sessions as well as sessions on Native American, African-American, and Portuguese-American genealogy. A panel discussion with a question-and-answer session will close the workshop. "Melungeon Roots: A Family Heritage Workshop" is sponsored by the Appalachian Center at Berea College, continuing the college's long tradition of commitment to Appalachia and to diversity. The event is organized by the Melungeon Heritage Association, Inc. (MHA), a non-profit organization formed in 1998. MHA was an outgrowth of the highly successful First Union: A Melungeon Gathering held in Wise in 1997. In 1998, MHA sponsored Second Union, an even larger gathering which featured sessions and lectures on history, social issues, and medical issues, as well as genealogy. The gatherings are only a part of the work of MHA. The organization is also dedicated to several other tasks, including continued research and writing, telling the story of the Melungeon people, and contributing to the mosaic of a past that has been hidden too long. At the same time, MHA plans to collect and preserve the research and artifacts of the past, forming the basis of a Melungeon Research Center to give these materials a permanent home. MHA’s mission is to document and preserve the heritage and cultural legacy of mixed- ancestry people of the Southern Appalachians. While the focus will be on those of Melungeon heritage, they do not restrict themselves to honoring only this group, but believe in the dignity of all such mixed ancestry groups. MHA is committed to preserving this rich heritage of racial diversity and harmony. MHA plans to hold Third Union in the summer of 2000. In the meantime, "Melungeon Roots" is the first of several planned smaller events which will focus on individual aspects of Melungeon heritage. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: MELUNGEON ROOTS "Melungeon Roots: A Family Heritage Workshop" will be held on the Berea College campus in Berea, Kentucky, on Saturday, June 26. This event will feature sessions on beginning, intermediate, and Internet genealogy, as well as specific sessions on other aspects of Melungeon genealogy. To register, send five dollars per registrant to Melungeon Roots, P.O. Box 4042, Wise, VA 24293.

    3. I just received a phone call from Jack Bailey of Harrodsburg. He announces the release of his new edition of "Bury Me At Dixville," long a standard but out-of-print genealogy resource for central Ky researching. The previous edition was so popular that the Mercer County Public Library was unable to prevent even its reproduced copies from being stolen, and I had to wait for an original owner to die in order to get my copy! The new book has 832 pages, 505 of which are text and the remainder annotated family photographs, newspaper clippings, wedding and birth announcements, school items, etc. (The previous edition of "Dixville" was a mere 119 pages in comparison.) Dixville is situated in the Deep Creek area of western Mercer County, near the conjunction of Mercer, Washington, and Boyle counties. The book features the Patterson, Divine/Devine, Leonard, Bugg, and Claunch families of the area, and also has large numbers of Baileys, Hatchells, Careys, Logues, Durhams, Whoberrys, and others. Jack says that the book will be ready for mailing Monday, March 22nd. The price is $65 (postpaid), and is presented loose-leaf in a 3-ring notebook binder. Orders should be sent to: Jack D. 2. History of Kentucky and Kentuckians Page 657 & 358 a full sized photo of Ben L. Bruner is also on a page. Ben L. Bruner, Secretary of State, to which he was elected on the Republican ticket, November 5, 1907; for a term of four years, is a native son of Kentucky and a man of typically American antecedents, his forbears having served in every American war of importance. The career of this statesman and physician should prove an inspiration to every youth to whom fortune has been chary in the bestowal of her favors, for he is a self made man of the beast type, having risen unaided from position of a street car driver to his present office. He was born at Clarkson , Grayson Co., January 16,1872, and is the son of the Hon. Peter S. Bruner, who was likewise a native Grayson County, born within it's present limits on the day preceding Christmas, 1838. Peter S. Bruner was the son of Peter and Rachael (Evans) Bruner, the former of whom saw the light of day at Danville, in 1792. he was a soldier in the way of 1812. His Father, Dr. Bruner's greatgrandfather, whose name was John Bruner was a native of Pennsylvania, of Dutch ancestry, and was a Soldier of the Revolutionary War. Hon. Peter S. Bruner, like those of his family who had gone before him, came speedily to the aid of his country at the breaking out of the Civil war , and served as a soldier in the union ranks throughout it;s progress. He enlisted as a private in company 1, Third Kentucky Calvary, rose to the rank of second lieutenant of his company, and at the close of the war was breveted first lieutenant for conspicuous service. He was elected a member of the house of representatives from Grayson county as a republican and served during the "long legislature" of 1891-3, with credit and distinction. The mother of Dr. Bruner bore the maiden name of Mary Rogers. She was born in Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky, and her father was the hon. Ben L. Rogers (in whose honor the subject is named) who was a county judge and a son of Jacob Rogers, a Native of Virginia and a Kentucky pioneer. Thus he is descended not only from Revolutionary stock, but from old Kentucky families on both paternal and maternal sides, and in his veins course a mixture of German, English, Welsh, and Scotch-Irish blood. Ben L. Bruner was reared on his father's farm, as has been the lot of so many prominent men as to make it almost the rule, and in his youth experienced what the average farmer's son experienced in farm work, ---saw logging, plowing and engaging in other strenuous occupation. He first attended the common schools, then first attended Millerstown Academy, then Leitchfield Seminary and finally, graduated from Sweetwater College, Sweetwater Tennessee, when twenty- one years of age. For a time he led a diversified existence, trying his hand as a pedagogue, clerking in a mereantile establishment and finally becoming a traveling commercial salesman. By reason of having at one time served in this capacity he later became a member of the Travelers Protective Association of America, in which he has been prominent for years, having been a delegate to many national conventions of the association. In 1893, shortly before the attainments of his majority, Dr Bruner paid adieux to home scenes and went to Louisville where he drove a street car, and in his fashion worked his way through medical college. In 1897 he graduated from the hospital Medical College, medical department of Central University and the following year, at the inception of the Spanish-American war, he heeded the inherited thrill of patriotism in his breast and enlisted as a private in Company M, Third Kentucky Regiment, and was immediately promoted to the office of first lieutenant and assistant surgeon of the Fourth Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, United Sates Volunteers. He remained in the army service one year. and receiving an honorable discharge, returned to Kentucky. Dr. Bruner now located at Hardyville, in Hart County, where he hung out his shingle and practiced his profession for five years. In 1904 he remove to Louisville, and has ever since that time resided in Kentucky's largest city. His first political office was bestowed upon him while he was in Hart co. being nominated by the Republicans as candidate fir the legislature and being elected as representative from that county in the year 1902. In 1907 he became the Republican nominee for secretary of state, to which office he was elected on November 7th of that year, for a term of four years beginning January 1, 1908. As secretary of state, Dr. Burner has rendered felling service in behalf of the commonwealth, and in splendid manner has improved the administration of affairs in that office. Among his most momentous accomplishments has been the strengthening of affairs relative to corporations and the banking department. He was the First State official to move into quarters in the new capitol, removing from the old building some seven weeks in advance of any other state official. >From every early period in life Dr. Bruner has been active in political affairs. As early as sixteen he made campaign speeches and engaged in joint debate with leaders in of the Democratic party. Not alone to Kentucky have his political efforts been confined, for being a forceful and effective campaign speaker his services have been called into requisition in other States. Liberal and generous as he has always been, and yet a man of earnest conviction, he has won favor with the populace and has a political following perhaps second to no other leader in the republican party in Kentucky. Noted for untiring energy and indefatigable determination, he does not know the word "fail." and with characteristic pluck he has forged his way to the front in life. Dr. Bruner is a popular and much desired lodge man and his fraternal afflictions extend to the Masonic order, in which he holds the Thirty-second degree, and is a Knight Templar and a member of the Mystic Shrine. In his profession he hold membership in the Hart County Kentucky State Medical Societies, and in the American Medical Association. He is President of the Transylvania Casualty Insurance Company of Louisville On April 30, 1891, Dr. Bruner joined the ranks of the Benedicts, wedding Miss Anna Blanche Burner the daughter of the Rev. Issac W. Bruner, a prominent minister of the Baptist Church, and they have had five children: Walter Lewis, Mary Rogers, Mabyl Blanche , Ben L. Jr. (deceased) and Issac Simeon
