If you can find a person in the death index on-line, there is an inexpensive way to get an uncertified copy of a death cert. http://www.kygenweb.net/vitals/index.html Click on the link above and scroll down past the search forms for vital records. You will come to a short list of people who will copy death certs. from 1911 to 1951 or so for only $1.50 plus a self-addressed stamped envelope. I have personally used the first 2 names mentioned (it was several yrs. ago) and can vouch for their honesty and speed. [email protected]
Boyd Researchers, Just to let you know my postings will be far and few between during the next 2 plus weeks. I have a ton of work, plus OT, to get these jobs out. The Senate did not vote on the vital records bill yesterday. (HB100) They passed it over and did not vote on it. It still could come up for a vote before the sessions ends. To make your feelings known, contact the Senate: Out of State 502-564-8100 In Kentucky: 1-800-372-7181 You can leave a message for ALL Senators. If you do not live in Kentucky tell them that this bill affects your right to information about your family who died in Kentucky. Other states have solved the identity theft issue by issuing certificates that are non-certified and stamped "For Genealogical Use Only - Not For Identification." Bill Status Line: 1-866-301-9004 HB 100
I've gotten so many requests that I'd better clarify how to get copies of the non-certified death certificates for 1911 - 1953 from the Kentucky Historical Society. You have to GO to the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort to copy them yourself for .30. You can also request a library reference person to copy it for you by mail or online. The charge is $5 if you are in-state or $12 if you are out-of-state. If you want more than one certificate use the Staff Researcher service which is hourly. $25 per hour (or $15 if you are a member of the Kentucky Historical Society.) They can copy several in an hour. Please us the online index to get the certificate number and year that it was filed. (usually this is the same year as the death.) One of the easiest to use is the Kentucky Vital Records Project of the Kentucky Gen Web. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kvrp/ You can order the certificates online with a credit card from the Kentucky Historical Society. Go to http://history.ky.gov Click on "Shop the 1792 Store" Click on "research" By mail with a check in advance: Kentucky Historical Society Library 100 W. Broadway Frankfort, KY 40601
hello...I am new here and have just discovered that many in my line are from this area (at least according to the census). Does anyone know if there is an archives in Boyd county? I went to the TN state archives and they had books on just abt every county in KY except Boyd? If someone was found on the Lawrence co 1880 census and again on the 1900 census as being grown and married, where is it possible that they married? I am not familiar w/ KY as much as I am with TN I am searching for a John Wesley Kiger(b-1868) who in 1880 lived with his parents in Lawrence CO. In the 1900 census, he is married to a Emma (could be a middle name) MAY (b-1876). Emma dies not long after as John is married to another by 1910 (mary magdaline Hall). any suggestions would be helpful!!! by the way, I am in Rutherford co., TN if I can be of any assistance.

He was buried in Ashland but I don't know the name of the cemetery. His name was Everett Russell Copenhaver and he died Jan. 26, 1922. He was a veteran of WW1. All I know about him is his wife was Martha and this was her hometown. Would anyone be able to find an obituary for him in the Ashland newspaper that might give me more info? I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Donna

The Kentucky Death certificates for 1911-1953 are available on microfilm at the Kentucky Historical Society and other genealogical libraries in Kentucky. At KHS the cost is .30 each. The deaths are indexed online at: Rootsweb http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ky/death/search.cgi (1911-2000) Vital Search http://www.vitalsearch-worldwide.com/ (1911-2002) University of Kentucky http://ukcc.uky.edu/~vitalrec/ (1911-1986) This will not change if the legislation passes. Only the later certificates will not be available. Sharon
Just saw this tonight on the KYCARTER-D Digest site. The Kentucky Legislature is getting ready to drastically limit access to Kentucky vital records including BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES, and DIVORCE. (MILITARY RECORDS are also being limited but I do not know which bill is involved.) You can find the entire bill at: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/record/04rs/HB100/SCS1.doc Death certificates will still be public record after 50 years but more recent death certificates will only be available to: 1. the decedent's widow or widower, 2. child eighteen (18) years of age or older 3. parent 4. grandparent 5. sibling eighteen (18) years of age or older 6. funeral director handling the decedent's funeral arrangements 7. personal representative of the decedent's estate 8. a named beneficiary of an insurance policy of the decedent 9. a person with a claim against the decedent's estate This means that genealogists can no longer order great-uncle Jasper's death certificate to see his parents' names. Birth records will be have limited access while the person is living but will still be public record after 100 years. Divorce and marriage records will be closed for 70 years. We are very late in the process. Surnames: Lewis Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XAB.2ACI/2348 Message Board Post: March 18, 2004 Middletown Journal, Middletown, Ohio John Culbertson Lewis John Culbertson Lewis of Brookfield, Conn., died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the age of 80. He was born on Aug. 16, 1923, in Ashland, [Boyd County], Ky., and grew up in Middletown, Ohio, where he met Betsy Wortley, the love of his life. Jack and Betsy raised their family in Dayton, Ohio, and Chappaqua, N.Y., and then moved to Brookfield, Conn., where Jack realized a lifetime dream of living on the water, on Candlewood Lake. Jack graduated from Yale University in 1944 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the Navy in World War ll and was chief radar officer on the USS Spangler. He married Betsy Wortley on Aug. 30, 1947. Jack and Betsy and their four daughters shared many wonderful adventures together over the years. Jack worked for Maxon Construction Co. in Dayton, Ohio, before beginning a 37-year career with IBM. At IBM he was a manager in the Real Estate and Construction Division and spent three years in Paris, France, with IBM Europe. His developing fascination with computers led him into the programming division at IBM. Jack thoroughly enjoyed mental challenges and the advent of computers was, for him, the ultimate game. Jack volunteered years of service as treasurer of St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church in Chappaqua and later for the Candlewood Yacht Club. He pursued his love of sailing by racing his Flying Scot with his wife as crew. For Jack, life was a game. Instead of seeing problems, Jack saw challenges, and went to work to find creative and detailed solutions. When diagnosed with prostate cancer, he fought and won the battle. His determined and creative use of alternative therapies was an inspiration to many people, both in and out of the medical field. Jack was a story-teller and writer of poems par excellence. Birthdays, weddings and other family milestones were marked by his humorous and insightful poetic commentaries. Jack was a source of sage and gentle guidance to friends of all ages. He had a gift of listening, questioning and helping people find answers to life’s difficult questions. He was financial advisor, marriage counselor and stand-in father to many friends and relatives who will miss him greatly. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Wendy Lewis; his brother, Walker Lewis; and his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Jake Lingle. ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 351 Main Street in Ridgefield, Conn. An informal gathering and light lunch in the church hall will follow the service. The Brookfield Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Ascension in Middletown, Ohio.
