William Andrew English, bricklayer and contractor, was born near Cynthiana, Harrison county, Kentucky, September 11, 1824. He is the son of William and Sarah (Dickson) English. He was raised a farmer at his birthplace, and his father being a bricklayer as well as a farmer also learned that trade. He lived with his parents until 1850 when he next went to Paris, Kentucky, and work at bricklaying one year when he came to Louisiana, Missouri, where he has followed his trade every since. In 1862 he became a member of Company K, ___ [blank] Regiment, M. S. M. In the spring of 1863 he was elected second lieutenant by his company and in 1865 was promoted to Captain. He served at intervals during the war. Himself and wife are members of the Seventh Street M. E. Church of Louisiana.
