Mason Co Alexander Cooper, farmer and stock-raiser, was born in Mason county, Kentucky, January 5, 1818, a son of Nicholas and Ann Cooper, with whom he came to Pike county, Missouri, in 1836, settling in Paynesville. He lived with his parents on a farm until he reached the age of manhood. When he was twenty-one years of age, he commenced to learn the wagon-makers trade, serving an apprenticeship of two years, after which he engaged in the same business for himself, which he followed for about nine years at Paynesville. He then engaged in the mercantile business at Paynesville for five years. He then turned his attention to farming and stock-raising. Mr. Cooper is a self-made man, having by good management and strict economy accumulated by his own exertions a large property. His farm consists of 418 acres of finely improved land under a high state of cultivation. He was married in 1846 to Miss Sarah Dyson, a native of England. By this union there were nine children, seven of whom still survive. His wife died in 1871.
