From the Knoxville News Sentinel 29 Mar 2005 ROSS, LT. COL. PAUL E., (USAF RETIRED) - 83, of Farragut, TN, formerly of Four Mile, KY, passed away Easter Sunday morning, March 27, 2005, at Park West Hospital. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Four Mile, KY and attended First Baptist Church Concord and Greenback Presbyterian Church. Born July 22, 1921, in Norton, Virginia, he was the son of the late Hubert and Thelma Ross. Col. Ross had a distinguished military career as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Highlights include combat experience in Korea, where he was shot down behind enemy lines on his 38th combat mission. Col. Ross was a former member of renowned USAF Thunderbird Team-Solo Pilot. His military career spanned 28 years serving in WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was an accomplished craftsman having built and flown a Pitts Special named the "Lil Jewell." He was an avid golfer and winemaker. Survivors include: his beloved wife of 62 years, Jewell Lewis Ross; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nita Cain, Jackie and Boyd Schultz all of Knoxville, Joann and Jim Horch of Dayton Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Lou Ross of Knoxville, Fred and Marietta Ross, Bill and Delphine Ross all of Marietta, Georgia; several nieces and nephews. Following receiving friends Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, Col. Ross will be taken to Creech Funeral Home, Middlesboro, KY. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Green Hills Cemetery Mausoleum, US Highway 25E with a entombment service following with Dr. Charles F. Jones officiating. Pallbearers: Richard Cataldi, William Anthony Lewis, Ron Marcum, Jeffrey Paul Maupin, David Mills, James Purcell, Dwight Ramsey, Ron Stapleton, Scott Stapleton, Todd Stapleton, Bruce Stockbridge and Jack Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers: Fred Bush, John Dixon, Red Gray, Norm Jackson, Robert Leonard, Dr. Robert N. Montgomery, Bill Stewart, Paris Swinford, Robert Womack and Richard Woodring. Family request that memorial be made to American Cancer Society, East Regional Office, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37919.
