>From The Knoxville News Sentinel 8 May 2002 MAYES, BILLY E. - age 74 of Tazewell, Tenn., passed away on Friday, September 6, 2002 at UT Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and retired from the USAF in 1973 after 21 years of service. He was a Claiborne County Commissioner from 1982- 1986 and a previous Street Supervisor of Tazewell. He was a member of American Legion. He was a member of the New Tazewell United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Porter and Addie Mayes; brother, Dale and nephew, Larry. Survivors include: wife of 48 years, Jean Mayes of Tazewell; daughter & son in law, Jeanne & Burgin Crutchfield of Tazewell; granddaughter, Jessica Jennings; brother & sister in law, J.C. & Janice Mayes of Knoxville, Tenn.; nieces, Zayn Bowling & Lu Jan Petrozzello, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; special lifelong friends, Earl Snodgrass & Even Oaks, and a host of other relatives and friends. Family to receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Tazewell United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 36, New Tazewell, Tenn. 37825. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday September 9, 2002 at Coffey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Parker and Rev. John Clark officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before service. Singers: Sherry Parker & Janice Derreberry. Pallbearers: Herbert Messer, C.B. Duncan, Jerrell Cox, Harvey White, Bill Igo, Reggie Large. Honorary pallbearers: Earl Snodgrass, Even Oaks, Bill Russell, Joe Buis, Tom Fugate, Roy Clay Robertson, Shelby Harmon, Jerry Beeler, Don Ray Fannon and Gary Burchett. Burial in Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors.
