    3. The Pineville Sun Dated Thursday, January 12, 1961 Front Page Headline- Merchant Found Dead in Store A well-known Cary, KY., merchant, Noah Howard, 69, was found dead in his general store early Sunday, apparently a victim of a heart attack. His wife, Eva Howard, post-mistress of Cary, said she and her husband alternately stayed at the store due to a series of robberies in that area, and when he left home Saturday night about 9 for the store, he did not compalin of any illness. When he didn't return home Sunday morning, Mrs. Howard went to the store to investigate and found him face down on the floor next to a bed which he occupied. Mr. Howard served for two terms as magistrate of Bell County District number 2 and was a prominent Republican. He saw action in World War I with General Jon J. Pershing in the Army and Argonne Forest. He had been a merchant for 30 yeras in the Straight Creek area and was active in the American Legion and VFW. Rev. W. B. Bingham, Rev. James Mitchell officiated at the services held Wednesday at the Arjay Baptist Church. Pallbearers were family friends. Burial followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Eva; one son, Captain Jakie M. Howard, U.S. Army, Frankfurt, Germany, who arrived home today; one daughter, Esther; and one nephew, Chad Howard with the U.S. International Service. Durham Funeral Home is in charge. ****************************** A check of the KY Death Index indicated that Noah Howard died January 7, 1961 at age 66 (obit stated 69) in Bell Co where he also resided. 001-00072. I did not find Noah (surprisingly) in the Social Security Death Index. I do not know the parents of Noah, but he might be the son of Daniel G. Howard and Clarinda Chappell. ****************************** Submitted by Mary Eldridge-Harris
