RESPONSE: Hello, You can most probably thank a Mr. MATHEWS who is personally responsible for inventorying literally hundreds, if not thousands, of small and all sized graveyards in Bell Co., KY. As for the birth and death records I have given you, you could possibly learn more by ordering those records from the State of KY, Vital Statistics. You might also go to the Bell Co. Message Board. On the menu where you post a query, there is a search line at the top left-hand side. If you enter your surname, CARMACK, and then click on Bell Co. to the right of the search line, it will give you any queries where the CARMACK surname has come up. Sometimes that is a good way to seek out other researchers. I know there is a "Pineville Sun" newspaper that published early on. You may wish to check into the possibility of an inter-library transfer of some of their microfilm. I have not done that so don't know the particulars of ordering. Also, the State of KY has a 3-set CD that covers births, deaths and some later marriages from the 1970's forward. They are very easy to search by the maiden name of the mother, by the surname, by 10 year periods of time. These could be helpful to you in locating more recent people past the time of the 1930 Fed. Census. In attempting to mesh together some births from the marriages I gave to you earlier on, these "may" be children born to some of these CARMACKs: DANIELS, Richard L. b. to Sarah CARMACK, maiden name; on 7-3-1940 in Bell Co. DANIELS, Effie B. b. to Sarah CARMACK; maiden name; on 6-28-1938 in Bell Co. CARMACK, Earl R. b. 6-24-1949 in Bell Co. to maiden name, China CARMACK CARMACK, Hazel R. b. 8-29-1951 in Bell Co. to maiden name, China CARMACK This one I don't really know about unless the Bertha SOUTHERLAND was really a Bertha DOCKERY, maiden name who had had an earlier marriage to a SOUTHERLAND: CARMACK, Francis b. 2-11-19327 in Bell Co. to Bertha DOCKERY CARMACK, Clifford M. b. 10-13-1940 in Bell Co. to Bertha DOCKERY CARMACK, Fred O. b. 8-18-1945 in Bell Co. to Bertha DOCKERY CARMACK, Gillis C. b. 1-23-1943 in Bell Co. to Bertha DOCKERY Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA In a message dated 3/23/2005 6:11:43 AM Pacific Standard Time, Jnshowl@aol.com writes: > Thank you Joyce for your reply. Thank you Joyce for your reply. The information was most helpful. I remember my Grandmother saying there was a flood in Kentucky and after that her Mother didn't hear from Alice's family again. I did some more digging and found the following: Bell County, Kentucky Hensley Cemetery Fred Otis Carmack born 5/11/1927 died 11/18/1982 there are 5 more Carmack's in this cemetery Bell County, Middlesboro, Kentucky Green Hills Memorial Garden part 1 George T. Carmack born 11/14/1915 died 10/17/1995 C2 John H. Carmack born 3/6/1913 died 11/14/1994 C2 there are 4 more Carmack's in this cemetery I went to the Middlesboro, KY newspaper web site in hopes of them having an archives. They do but it only goes to 2000 so far. Again, thank you for your help. Jackie Howell
RESPONSE: Hello, I am not related so far as I know. Most probably all the children listed in the 1920 and 1930 Bell Co. Fed. Census belong to this Huse and Alice WILSON CARMACK. KY didn't begin recording births until 1911 and even then it was not a perfect system for a number of years. Births were missed. There are duplicate recordings in some cases. Floods occurred and birth records were reconstructed, etc. I picked up just a few births on the Ky Birth Index CD's available from the State of KY: CARMACK, John b. 3-6-1913 in Bell Co. to Alice WILSON, maiden name CARMACK, Fred O. b. 5-11-1927 in Bell to Alice WILSON CARMACK, Ruth Jane b. 5-21-1926 in Bell to Alice L. WILSON On the KY Death Index, there is: CARMACK, Alice died on 11-4-1958 in Bell Co., KY at age 75 years, Vol. 47, Cert 23171 CARMACK, Huse F., died 6-11-1962 in Bell Co., KY at the age of 74 years, Vol. 25, Cert 12154 On the SSDI: CARMACK, George died 10-17-1995; born: 11-14-1915; SS#402-12-4596; last address: Middlesboro, Bell Co., KY CARMACK, John H. died 3-16-1913; born: 11-14-1913; SS#402-12-4603; last address: Middlesboro, Bell Co., KY There is a marriage record in the Bell Co. Marr. Index: CARMACK, George to SOUTHERLAND, Bertha, Book 96, Page 104; dated: January 19, 1937 CARMACK, Sarah Lee to DANIELS, Fred on Oct 12, 1935, Book 94, Page 133 CARMACK, Ruth to Andy JONES on Sept 16, 1933, Book 78, Page 64 This one I don't quite understand because it looks like it could be this Huse CARMACK but not to Alice so might be a first marriage for him: June 3, 1910 CARMOCK, Huston to BURCHETT, Pollie, Book N, Page 554 Hope this helps. Brenda, I lived in Edgewood, back in the middle 30's I can't remember a Baptist Church in that community, I do remember that church services were held in the School Building which also served as The Red Man Hall. For those of you who enjoy the history of Bell Co, you might be interested in reading the most recent issue of the Gateway, the journal of the Bell Co Historical Society that has just been mailed to members. In it are articles relating to Arthur Campbell of Middlesboro; a history of the Church of God Mtn Assembly; Martin Gibbons's reminisces of life at Cubbage in the 1940's; an account of the murder of Queen of the Rhine prostitute, Alice Lamb; a short, 1930 sketch of the KU ice plant; a history of the Jacksons of Laurel Hill by Rutha Jackson; and a query list. The cover of the Gateway, which features a silhouette of Daniel Boone on a horse riding through the Gap, was drawn by Ricky Leach who descends from Wm Partin. Wm, b 1760-1770, is the first Partin who settled at Frakes in what was called South America in order to farm and look for Swift's silver. He was unlucky with finding the silver. Information for the society is as follows: PO Box 1344 Middlesboro, KY 40965 606-242-0005 bellhist_society@hotmail.com Further, if you're in Middlesboro at any time, please plan to stop in to visit the Bell Co Historical Museum which is located beside the coal house on 20th St. We have recently received a wealth of rare Bell Co pictures and postcards donated by Roy Frost, formerly of Bell Co. He purchased a majority of them from the estate of Jack Sharpe. Also, David Hurst of Middlesboro donated a huge scrapbook of memorabilia relating to Ig and Ug Fuson of Middlesboro. Ig and Ug descend from James Robinson Fuson, Jr and Lucinda Evans of Little Clear Creek. The Fusons first came to Clear Creek in the very early 1800's and settled beside the Evans family.
I did not know when but knew they spelled it different sometimes. My surgery went really well, my eye is still dialated? tonight, but the doc checked it this morning and said it was fine. So far it is good. I will be glad to get back to helping at the society. And how are you? Rutha
