pack saddle worms were always in the corn fields. they really hurt when they stung. the treatment of the day was a wet chew of tobacco held on the sting until you lost it or forgot where the hurt was. where the miner's hospital is today, there was a corn field in the junction, called the VICTORY FIELD, a favorite place for hide and seek, and to find corn left behind at harvest. The kids from JUNCTION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL would gather the corn and roast it in a bon fire . The open fields with rolling mounds, we called INDIAN BURIAL GROUND, always pushed our imaginations until someone would run home declaring they were sure they had just seen a ghost! CAPITOE or CAPITO was a coal mining company where my father worked. pat hendrickson sowders
My gr aunt lived at Capatoe back in the 60's. I think it's on Hwy 74 going west out of Middlesboro toward Fonde.
Pack saddle is a big green worm that grows either on tomatoes or corn -- it's been too long since I did any gardening! If I'm not mistaken these worms carry a powerful wallop of a sting! They were called pack saddles because they look like they're have a saddle on their backs.
Cap-a-toe. Mining camp Pack settle was something like big green worm. I THINK. LOL Kay

Hi Connie, Thanks, yes that is the one. Why doesn't a hotel chain want to put one in Pineville? Thanks, Charlotte
I am sorry. In my last e-mail "Memories" I said my Mother was talking about a time frame of the early to late 40s. I should have said late 30s to early 40s. Bette Sutton-Rodey __________ Home Pages http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/d/Bette-J-Rodey/
After dinner on weekends I often sit quietly with my mother and encourage her to tell me about her memories of growing up in Shawanee, Tennessee. After she goes home I write down what she told me. I want to share her memories with my children and grandchildren. Many of Mama's "memories" happened in Middlesboro, KY. I can usually grasp exactly where she is talking about. I know that Powell Valley is "Pals Valley" and Shawanee is "Swanee" ect. Tonight I am lost. Mama told me about a man getting shot over a card game in "Tippy Toe Kentucky." You got to Tippy Toe from 19th Street in Middlesboro. The houses she remembers were on stilts. Now I am lost. The time frame she is talking about is the early to late 40s. She also told me about picking fruit and getting stung by a "Pea Sally". I remain true to Mama's accent when I write her memories and make a note of what I am taking about. Does anyone know about "Tippy Toe KY. or what a Pea Sally is? I am spelling the two names phonically. Thanks, Bette Sutton-Rodey __________ Home Pages http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/d/Bette-J-Rodey/

Hello, Hi, Is it the Mountain Echo or the Mountain Advocate? Can you tell me where to view these papers? I am looking for an obit for my grandma CATHERINE SAYLOR CALDWELL who died abt 1905 in Leslie County KY. Right where the counties meet ( Leslie, Bell, Clay, Harlan) so it could be in any paper around there at that time. Thousand Sticks stops at 1904 and it wasn't in there. Birth and death records for the time in those counties are nonexistent from what I have been able to see and I have been to KDLA spoke to them again yesterday. Any help appreciated. I am running out of places to search.
