Talley Bath County was formed from Montgomery in 1811. First settlers, Elias Tobin made a small cabin in 1775 on Slate Creek. Moses Sharp settled on Bald Eagle in 1780. Hugh Sidwell, Thomas Clark and a Mr. Bollard setled on Slate Creek, at the mouth of Naylor's Branch, in 1783. The only fort or stations built as protecion from Indians were the old blockhoouse built in 1786 on the road to the Olympian Springs, and Cassity's Station.....erected byPeter Cassity in 1787. the old Slate Furnace was built by John Cockey Owings, Jacob Myers and John Breckentidge in 1790. First gramd Jury, Sennett Young (foreman) Robert Hopkins, Thomas Welch, Isaac Butcher,John McILhenny, John Cushow, Wm. Hamilton, John Boyd, Rowland Burbridge,David Bratton, Moses Hendrix, Mourning Vice, James Hopkins, Benonie Cushow, John Colglazure, Richard Stone, Daniel Young, Thos. Sinclair, and Wm. Grimes. They returned an indictment against James Anderson for the murder of Abraham Becraft. May 3, 1813 The grand jury composed of John Williams, James Mosley, John McNabb, Rowland Richards, William richards, Wm. Poor, John Wilson, John Norris, andrew Biggs, Richard Lyman, Phillip Williams and James McCullough indicted Sam Donley for killing Wm. Cantrell (manslaughter) July 26, 1817. Jury Wm. Smith, Robert Downs, Thomas Perry, Gordon Griffin, Drury B. Boyd, James Thompson, Wm. Miller, Christopher Oakley, George Butcher, John Trumbo, and Jarvis Brennigan sentenced Ellenor Gillespie to hang for the murder of her husband. She was executed at the forks of the road on Mt/ Sterling pike, on gallows erected by David Hynoman. Guards were: George Cloyd Jr.,Charley cooper, Asa Maxey, Denny Burns, Billy Burns, and David Fathey. While Ellenor was confined in jail, George Lansdown went in and undressed himself, gave her his clothes and she attempted to escape by walking boldly out of the jail. David Fathey saw the deception and arrested her as she was leaving. Lansdown was incensed at Fathey for not permitting her to escape; a fight ensued and Fathey whipped Lansdown. Nov. 20, 1857 Milton Tackett was hanged by sheriff W.P. Conner at the forks of the Road on Wyoming Pike for the murder of Frank Fielder. J.W. Moore was Circuit Judge. Jury had to be summoned from Nichlas County...George Holland, G.W. Frontnemer, Robert Potts, James Scobee, William Reid, Leroy Davidson, David Allen, W.W. Howe, robert Stephenson, Wm. Watts, John Durham and Coleman Ratliffe.
