While in Bath County I copied the Will of Hugh Hicklin, who died in 1811. His is the first Will filed in Bath County. If memory serves me correctly, he was not a resident there, but in one of the surrounding counties. I'll have to get the Will out and look again. Hugh Hicklin was born ca 1725 in Augusta County, VA, was married to Elizabeth?. He is also a son of Thomas Hicklin. I have his children listed as per his Will. My memory is not the best, but I do believe I remember a grandson, Charles, mentioned in this Will. As far as I know, I am not "directly" linked to the Hicklins by blood. But......My third greatgrandparents David M. and Nancy Ann McDonald Cartmill named their youngest son Hugh Hicklin Cartmill. Which didn't make any sense at all at first. After a few years of researching and lots of help from other McDonald researchers, I believe the answer to be: Hugh Hicklin was first married to Martha? and secondly to Sarah Hicklin, who could possibly be the d/o Hugh and Elizabeth. So I believe Nancy Ann named her son after her stepmother's father. (Lord, it's confusing, isn't it?) I also have a big question about David Cartmill's land settlement which lists one of the heirs as Sally Hicklin Cartmill. So evidently, I am missing a son, somewhere. These people can all be found in Bath/Augusta, VA together and then later on in Kentucky in close proximity to each other. The Cartmills, McDonalds, Hicklins and a guzzilion more. It makes my head hurt to think about getting them all unraveled. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I've been waiting for years for anyone to step forward with the right answers.
