Lee... You are EXACTLY right.... in my 30 years of research... The Maze family name first shows up in the 1790 census, in South Carolina, with one Abner Maze of Edgefield Co. By 1800, there are 6 Mazes, 5 in PA and NY, and one, Benjamin, in Iredell Co., NC. By 1810, there are over 20, 3 of them in KY - John, John, and Samuel, all in then Harrison Co. By 1870, there are over 200 Maze entries in the US census index, 7 in KY. Only one was in Bath Co. - Andrew J. Maze, keeper of a poorhouse. The others were in Fleming Co. (Andrew, Martha), Boyd Co. (Elisha), Scott Co. (Armilda, Drew), Lyon Co. (Liza). There are 25 Maze entries in Indiana in 1870. In 1910, there are 24 in KY, 49 in IN. It would be very helpful to those responding to your queries if you could specify counties, as well as towns, since most records are based on that. E.g., what counties are Polksville and New Castle in? --- Malcom Maze <malcommaze@wctel.net> wrote: > I have not heard anything about the Maze family > so I am resubmitting. > Anyone knowing anything, please respond. I haven't posted my names in some time and maybe we have some new people with new computers for Christmas so I am going to list them. The Statons came from Amherst County around 1800 but the earliest proven that I have is Solomon STATON born 1792. It appears he is on the census with Thomas Staton in 1810 but he could be a grandson. Solomon Staton married to Malinda MC CLAIN, with permission from her mother, Hannah McCarty. The story is that Hannah had married a Mr. McClain who died on the Cumberland Trail coming to Ky. She then married Augustine MC CARTY and had a large family. Augustine died about 1819, their son, Andrew Jackson McCarty married to Francis McClain. Francis McClain was daughter of James McClain and Sarah..... James was born in Union Co., SC., and raised a large family in Bath County also. A J McCarty and Francis McClain had a daughter, Lucy Jane McCarty who married Oliver Perry Staton, son of the above Solomon and Malinda. Oliver Perry Staton married to Martha FIELDER, daughter of William Fielder and Elizabeth SHARP. Their son, Perry Jackson Staton was my great-grandfather. He married to Julia Ann WILLIAMSON. Julia was the daughter of William Williamson and Margaret Sarah WARNER. William died around 1910 and most of the Williamson family moved to West Virginia. William Williamson was the son of Absolum Williamson and Julia Ann Epperson. Absolum was son of David WILLIAMSON and Sally GRIFFIN. Not proven but Sally is believed to be daughter of Gordon GRIFFIN and Katherine KISSINGER. Margaret Sarah Warner was the daughter of Jacob Warner and Elizabeth SHULTZ, Jacob was the son of Jonas Warner and Elizabeth CLAYTON and grandson of Jacob Warner and Elizabeth REMY/RAMEY. Elizabeth was daughter of Samuel Perry Shultz and Mary BECRAFT. Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Becraft and Mary FOWLER of Frederick Co., Maryland. Like to hear from anyone researching these families. Joanne http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/front.html

I am attempting to identify the children of Sarah Eden Duty (1798-1882) and John Duty (1785-1856). Both are buried at Old Bethel Cemetery. Believe one daughter was Mary (born about 1824) who married a Mr. Spratt as Sarah Duty was living with Mary on the 1880 census of Bath Co. at Sharpsburg. Could someone assist with a marriage date for a Mary Duty to Mr. Spratt? Would estimate marriage in the 1840's. Would anyone have access to 1900 census to see if Mary Spratt is listed or any of her children: Barnes, Leander, Charles and John Spratt. Thanks. Jackie

1810 census lists Daniel Duty, Mason Co., KY and Wm. Duty, Bourbon Co., KY. 1870 census, Sharpsburg Pct., Bath Co., KY, lists Sarah Duty,w, f, 70, b. KY, as a farmer, with Allen 46, Eliza 40, and Robert, 7 and George 4, (no separate last name), all black. Next door is A.D. Spratt 52, wife Mary Ann 46, children Mary 20, Louann 18, Andrew 17, Oliver 15, Leander 13, Charles 11, Ladina 9, and Wallace, 7, plus one farm laborer, Samuel Rogers, m, w, 20, and 4 black folks (last name Duty). I think you need someone who has access to the 1850 and 1860 censuses as well. There is another Sarah Duty, age 75, in the same Pct., with a household of 10 blacks. There is also a 47-yr. old man C. Everything is correct EXCEPT the origin of the name.... it comes from an Indian work OK, but it does not mean "Land of tomorrow".... there are several derivations of what it means but none of them are as "sanitized" so to speak, as the one you mentioned.... most renditions have to do with "bloody ground", etc. Kentucky was predominately a hunting ground for various Indians and a "War Zone" of sorts also... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darrell Warner" <darrellwarner@kc.rr.com> To: <KYBATH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 30, 2002 8:50 AM Subject: [KYBATH] Interesting info on Kentucky > I stumbled across this > > State Name Kentucky Nickname Bluegrass State > State Abbrev KY Motto United we stand, divided we fall > State Capital Frankfort State Bird Cardinal > State Admission Date June 1, 1792 State Tree Tulip Tree Liriodendron tulipifera > State Flower Goldenrod Solidago altissima > Name Origin Based on the Iroquois Indian word "Ken-tah-ten," meaning "land of tomorrow" >
