While in Bath County I copied the Will of Hugh Hicklin, who died in 1811. His is the first Will filed in Bath County. If memory serves me correctly, he was not a resident there, but in one of the surrounding counties. I'll have to get the Will out and look again. Hugh Hicklin was born ca 1725 in Augusta County, VA, was married to Elizabeth?. He is also a son of Thomas Hicklin. I have his children listed as per his Will. My memory is not the best, but I do believe I remember a grandson, Charles, mentioned in this Will. As far as I know, I am not "directly" linked to the Hicklins by blood. But......My third greatgrandparents David M. and Nancy Ann McDonald Cartmill named their youngest son Hugh Hicklin Cartmill. Which didn't make any sense at all at first. After a few years of researching and lots of help from other McDonald researchers, I believe the answer to be: Hugh Hicklin was first married to Martha? and secondly to Sarah Hicklin, who could possibly be the d/o Hugh and Elizabeth. So I believe Nancy Ann named her son after her stepmother's father. (Lord, it's confusing, isn't it?) I also have a big question about David Cartmill's land settlement which lists one of the heirs as Sally Hicklin Cartmill. So evidently, I am missing a son, somewhere. These people can all be found in Bath/Augusta, VA together and then later on in Kentucky in close proximity to each other. The Cartmills, McDonalds, Hicklins and a guzzilion more. It makes my head hurt to think about getting them all unraveled. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I've been waiting for years for anyone to step forward with the right answers. Paula

Researching the EDEN family of Bath Co. One of the daughters of William and Nancy (Vice) EDEN was Margaret Ellen, who married Robert T. Shultz. Margaret Ellen died 12 Dec 1925 and Robert died 18 Dec. 1924. They had at least one daughter named Alta. Would like to reach descendants of this family. Could someone secure the information from either obituary, tell me where they are buried, who Alta married, etc. Thanks. Jackie

I am trying to trace some of my great-Uncles that I don't have anything on. My Grandmother's siblings were: George Perry; the information I have here seems to have been her Uncle, not her brother. This George's father appears to be the s/o John and Nancy McCall Perry and was born in the late 1850's. My Grandmother was born 1892. THAT's a lot of years difference. Also, I remember going to Uncle George's funeral in Texas in 1960-61(?). Clem Perry; I met him when I was in Texas. It is believed he and George went to Texas as very young men, so was there some sort of land grants(?) going on there? It was so good to see all those posts to the list but.......I want to remind you that when you make a contact about your ancestor and send a reply....Please share it with the List. This is where things get bogged down. I got mine and now you get yours. This is what sharing your genealogy is. Its not all for you but for the rest of us too. If you noticed, I tried to send some help to everyone and sent it to you as well as the list. This helps people who cannot get their information any other way. It also helps them to know that their GGGG Grandma had other siblings. Sometimes that is the hardest information to come by. You all did so good and I know you have made our list owner so proud. Keep this going now until you are satisfied..... Oh! Just one more thing........[could be 2 or more....LOL] Please don't ask for more than one thing/Surname at a time. This makes people crazy!! Have you ever read a query where someone says"Please help me find my ancestors. Their names are SMITH." No dates, no location, and they want all the Smiths?? Yeh! Right! That makes me want to help real bad. We have a great Bath County Family here......I always try to help when I can. Blessings Vivian

This is a good rule of thumb when looking for your ancestors and their children. Please print it out for future referrence; First son named after Fathers....Father. Second son named after Mothers...Father. Third son named after The FATHER Fourth son named after the fathers oldest Brother First Daughter named after Mothers....Mother Second daughter named after Fathers ...Mother Third daughter named after...MOTHER Fourth daughter named after the Mothers ..Oldest sister. Her first son was Joseph Howard born 1817 in Bath Co. married in July of 1836 to a Mary Jane Craye (Ihave not found any record of Joseph have children by Mary ) He married a second time to Nancy Ward in 1849 and again I have no record of him haveing children) Another son of Nancy Howard was Marcus who was born in 1822 in Bath Co. who married Abigail Warren Sept. 1 1854 in Nicholas Co. They had 3 children a Mary Howard born 1850??? and a Josephine Howard born 1852 and a Frederick Howard born 1857. Last my line a Benjamin F. Howard born July 1854 in Bath Co. Married "about" 1850 in Slate Co. No record found yet of the marriage but Artimisia Howard born 1856, Joseph Howard born 1858, unknown Howard born 1860, and Charles William Howard (My line) born 1863, and Marcus Howard born 1870. I have found Nancy and her 3 sons on the 1850 and 1860 census with children listed I have found Nancy in the 1840 census in Bath Co on Slate creek. I know there was a James Howard family that moved from Estill Station in 1797 and he claimed land there in Slate Creek area. Rather Nancy was married to one of his son, I haven't found any proof. James died in 1836 and one of his daughters was married to Able Morgan a son of Ralph Morgan. Any help find who the father of Nancy children were is appreciated. Bob Blankenship >> I can't help with the father of Nancy's children but I noticed there were NESTORS living with the Howards at times. In the 1870 Bath co. KY census I find that Marcus Howard age 46 b. ca. 1824 Matilda age 49 [nee Nestor] Josephine 20 Frederick Howard 14 Tilford 10 I can however, narrow your search for Nancy's husband to 1870 because she had Marcus in 1870 so he died about that time. Sory I couldn't help more but perhaps someone will be able to help now. Blessings! Vivian
