    2. Dear Kentucky Researchers, I dearly love my CD-ROM called Kentucky Land records, 1774-1924. I have some good news to share with you. Note the late date of some of these land records--1924. If you have lost some of your early Virginians or some of your North Carolinians, you might find them on one of these lists. (There are a few Pennsylvanians, of course.) Because of my CD-ROM, I no longer have to squint at the five volumes of Willard Jillson for land records which list approximately 100,000 individuals. I even found on the CD my Michael Stoner of early Kentucky fame--I hadn't found him before in the indexes of the Jillson published volumes. The CD is very searchable. Anyway, this is to notify that I got a catalog from Family Tree Maker Magazine today of their CD-ROM sale. This CD ROM Item #00650, which originally cost nearly $30 is now only about $12. You might scan the catalog at ww.Genealogy.com/fall-sale. This is not an ad, but I thought you would like to know of a bargain when you see one. This information is NOT in the subscription to Genealogy Library, in case you are a subscriber to that online info. E.W.Wallace who has MANY early Kentuckians (refugees from VA and NC)

    3. I have corresponded with a man who has an old bible that he purchased as part of an estate auction. He would very much like to find descendants in case they would be interested in this bible. The first marriage has Thomas G. Whaley and Mary H. Caldwell married 19 May 1839 in Sharpsburg by Rev. R.F. Caldwell. This family evidently moved to Shelbyville at some point. There are several marriages, births, deaths and a few miscellaneous items. Please contact me if you are descended from this couple and I will put you in touch with the man who has the bible.

    3. Hi Fellow Listers, I need to know if anyone can help me solve a mystery. William H. Hornback. This man is driving me crazy as well as his children...and the fact that they are all dead makes it even more weird that they ARE driving me crazy. Surnames in this email...Hornback, Lynam, Dailey, Snedgar, Davis and Rice Today I received 4 death certificates I ordered, with special thanks to Chester Ward, he's who I ordered them thru. AND, now even more questions are raised than answered. This is the census information I have on William H. Hornback and Elizabeth Lynam. William is the son of Ishmael and Sophia (Clayton) Hornback and Elizabeth is the daughter of Andrew and Jane Lynam. 1870 Bath Co Census Record #99, Wyoming Precinct: William Hornback 36, KY, farmer; Elizabeth 33, Milford W. 14, Sarah A. 12, Joseph P. 10, John J. 8, William M. 6, George A. 3, Harrison T. 1 KY Death Index online Last Name First Name MI Age Death Place Residence Death Date Volume Certificate Death Volume HORNBACK WILLIAM 080 BATH 09-25-1914 046 22827 1914 Have this death cert. 1880 Federal KY Census Place: Bethel, Bath, Kentucky Source: FHL Film 1254402 National Archives Film T9-0402 Page 351A Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthpl. This helps negate that he married Milly Copher in 1883. There is a marriage between a William Hornback and a Milly Copher on record in Bath Co., but I believe it to be another William Hornback. With special thanks to John Vice who provided me with Elizabeth Hornback's headstone information from Gilead Cemetery. It states Elizabeth Hornback born November 06, 1837 died January 29, 1908. With this information it helps negate the suppossed 4th marriage of William Hornback to Hannah Davis. NOW, to confuse the issue more...there IS a marriage on record in Bath Co for a William Hornback and a Hannah Davis. I also sent off for a death certificate for Marion Frances Hornback who is the daughter of a WIlliam Hornback and a Hannah Davis, she was born March 14, 1901 according to her death certificate and died Aug. 11, 1917, her place of birth Bath Co, place of death Market House, Franklin County, KY. Once again with the census info and headstone info I beleive William and Elizabeth were married up till 1908. Which would mean there's another William Hornback going around getting married and having children. No one knows who William's son William married, maybe some of these children are in actuality his Grandchildren and not his children. I also recieved 3 other death certificates. Harry T. Hornback, Park Hornback and John J or G Hornback. All 3 children listed as belonging to William. Two are from his suppossed first marriage, one from Elizabeth Lynams marriage to WIlliam. As far as census info goes, on the 1860 census it shows William Hornback living alone with 4 children and right next door as neighbors it shows Andrew and Jane Lynam with their 23 year old daughter ELizabeth living with them. The census doesn't state she's Elizabeth Hornback, just Elizabeth. There has been and will continue to be the question on whether or not William had another wife BEFORE he married Elizabeth Lynam. BUT, now there is alot of questions and a possible lead for us to follow up on. Harry T. Hornback place of death Bath Co male white married wife Margaret Stewart date of birth 1866 age at death 68 farmer Father William hornback KY mother Elizabeth Lynam KY informant Willie Barby burial Gilead Cem. Who is Mrs. Marion McKee? Is she related to Park and the Hornbacks? He is one of the 4 children we think is from the first marriage of William but it lists Lizzie Lynam as the mother. Now, did the informant not know the mother or assume since William had been married to Elizabeth for so long that she was his mother? John ? W. Stewart Residence of deceased Bath Co, KY Date of death Sept 15, 1946 cause of death conjestive heart failure. Now you can see why more questions are raised. Is Sarah Rice the first wife? Is this John my Williams son? If he is then the question arises is Sarah Rice the mother of Park also? Does anyone know who Sarah Rice who married John is? Does anyone have their marriage info? If John and Park are brothers and Park is born before John then we have 2 mothers for the brothers listed on death certs. If Sara Rice IS the first wife of WIlliam and the mother of his first 4 children then we have more digging to do. Now, you all know why I have grey hair *smile* Thank you for listening to me about this family!!! Any help is MOST appreciated. Sincerely and thank you, Donna

    1. Re: [KYBATH] 1820-1840 Marriage Bonds
    2. John Grace
    3. Donna, what I have is based on the research of others, and is not well documented: Jacob Ross was born 8 Sep 1792 in Ky. and died 30 Jun 1880 in Randolph Co., IN. He is buried in Huntsville Cemetery, Huntsville, Randolph Co., IN.. He married Elizabeth Denton on 26 Sep 1815 in Bath Co., KY. Elizabeth was born 13 Mar 1799 in Fleming Co., KY. (or Tn.), and died 12 Feb 1857 in Nettle Creek Twnshp., Randolph Co., IN. Jacob's father was, reportedly, John Ross, born 18 September 1754 in Prince William Co., VA. LDS claims John was a Revo. War vet. There is some controversy over the name of Johns wife. Through circumstanial evidence, I beieve her name was Elizabeth Piatt (also spelled Pyatt). There were Pyatts in Bath County around this time, but I have been unable to link Elizabeth with any of them. In addition to Jacob, John also had other children: 2)Mary B. Ross, born. ca1786 in VA, died 1865 in Bath Co., KY. Mary married Rev. Jeremiah M. HUNT on 27 October 1805 in Fleming Co., Ky. 3)Margaret Ross, born 1800, married Wesley DENTON on 23 November 1818 in Fleming Co., Ky. 4)Eleanor Ross, born 1788, married James Marshall Feb. 2, 1811 in Fleming Co.. Eleanor is reported by John Vice <johnvice@kih.net> . I have no other report on Eleanor. 5)Andrew Ross, born 1790 in Livingston County, KY, died 1841 in Livngston Co., Kentucky. Andrew is reported on http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/h/a/Linda-J-Chavez/ODT9-0002.html. I have doubts about Andrew, but Ill give him to you in the interests of completeness. Jacobs children included (?): 1)John Ross b. 26 Jul 1817 in Fleming Co., KY. living in Randolph Co., Ind. at 1850 census married Elizabeth Ball HUNT 24 Mar 1840 in Randolph Co., IN. b. 18 May 1823 in Randolph Co., IN. bondsman was William Denton. I have not yet been able to link my Rosss up with Jacobs line, so I have not done much independent research on this particular descendency. BTW, I have a note on my chart for your Celia (Denton) Perkins. On one of the census lists I found (1860 I believe), there is a Susan Ross, age 0, living in the household of Elijah and Celia Perkins. Do you happen to know who Susan was? The Ross's of Bath Co. are my primary area of interest, and I have never been able to link Susan up with any of the other Ross families. Well, those are the high-lites of what I know(?) about Jacob Ross. I also maintain charts on related Denton, Hunt, Piatt and Vanlandingham lines, but have much work left to do on documenting the various links. 1. Re: [KYBATH] 1820-1840 Marriage Bonds
    2. John Grace
    3. The Marriage Bond that I am looking at right now is for the marriage of Jacob Ross and Elizabeth Denton. It is signed by Jacob Ross and William Denton. My copy is not complete, but from other sources I know that Jacob and Elizabeth were married on Sept. 26, 1815. The text of the Marriage Bond actually appears to have been written in two hands: the legal phrasing is in a small, tight script; while the names of the parties (in the body of the legal text) is in a noticably larger and more open hand. In fact, the names (William Denton, Jacob Ross, Elizabeth Denton) are about 3 times as large as the adjoining legal phrasing. What is also peculiar is that the name "William Denton" in the body of the marriage bond text appears to be in a different hand than the signature at the bottom of the Marriage Bond contract. On the other hand, I have a Marriage Bond from 1839 in which the body of the document appears to have been written in a single hand, and the signatures at the bottom look somewhat different from the names as written in the body of the contract. In reference to Linda's suggestion that some Marriage Bonds were "complete copies": This would not seem to be the case here because of the variations in hand writing styles. This is not to say that the Clerk could not have tried to replicate these variations when making an exact copy, but if the copy is THAT exact, then Im hoping that the variations in style are still of some value in identifying the parties involved. I do note that on the Marriage Bonds that I have, there are hand written "seals" next to the signatures. Apparently the County Clerk never used a notary stamp or imprinter. In reference to Carters question about Marriage Bonds after 1840: I dont know how late they were used. The latest one that I have is from August of 1839. Im sure the people at the Kentucky State Historical Center Archives in Frankfort would be able to tell you exactly what the last date was. BTW, I was just in the Bath County Library in Owingsville last week. For those of you not familiar with it, they have an excellent genealogy room, with many volumes of genealogy for local families. It is well worth your time to go out of your way to visit it. I can almost guarantee youll find something new there. A very helpful staff, too. Thanks to all who responded to my posting.
