    1. [KYBARREN] PETERS CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH - BARREN CO
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Peters Creek Missionary Baptist Church was constituted 19 January 1830 by Elders John H. Baker, Thomas Scrivener and Richard Ragland and had 13 original members. Thomas Scrivener was chosen as the first pastor; Ambrose Kinslow the first deacon and Daniel Oliphant the first clerk. On May 3, 1838 it was decided to build a church house which was located on the property of Obadiah Britt. A new church building was proposed in 1858 to be located on the pike where the Tobacco Road intersects the pike; the current location. The original church was a little log building west of U. S. Highway 31E almost into Peters Creek and Big Barren River Valley. A larger church was erected in 1838 which stood about ¼ mile southeast of the present school building at Lucas. The 3rd building, also of logs, was located a short distance south of the previous land. The 4th building is the current one. As noted in the minutes of this book, in September 1970, the late Eva Coe Peden attended the business meeting of the church and was granted permission to borrow all the minute books of the church and re-type them. She typed up a rough draft of the old books and when I was given her files in the early 1990’s by her late husband, he noted that she had planned on publishing the entire minutes of Peter’s Creek. In March 1993, I published the minutes from Book 1 which covered 1830 through 1872. In February 1996, I published Book 2 which covered January 1873 through August 1910. It is now my pleasure to publish the last 3 books that Mrs. Peden typed. Book 3 covers the time frame of September 1910 through December 1932 and saw eight pastors: L. D. Robinson, John Winn, J. S. Denham, S. T. Walden, J. L. Dawsey, J. H. Swan, C. V. Irvin and Baxter Powell. Book 4 covers the time frame of January 1933 through December 1950 and during this time Baxter Powell continued as pastor followed by J. L. Dawsey and then Cecil Britt. Book 5, the last one transcribed by Mrs. Peden, covers January 1951 through December 1970. Cecil Britt continued his pastorate during this time frame followed by C. G. Morrison, Garnet Martin, Henry Smith, Cecil Britt again and Frank Harlow. The most notable features of these last three books are the extensive membership lists shown at the front of each book. Many death dates are shown. The family names from earliest days continued to serve in the person of their descendants. The names Britt, Powell, Huddleston, Alexander, Berry, Bunch, Carver, Dawsey, Dean, Elmore, Holder and hundreds more appear on many pages. My disclaimer is that I have never seen the original books. If there were spelling errors by the clerk, I showed them as written. If there were typographical errors by Mrs. Peden, I would not know except for the most obvious and left as she typed them. Names are spelled many ways on the old pages of these books. If I have allowed errors to sneak through, I heartily apologize. If you think you have ties to or interest in this church, I will email you, privately, the 12 page (double column) index of the book. Please write me off-list and I'll send them to you as soon as possible in a Word format. The book will be available next week. Sandi
