Things are starting to get very interesting with the Lock(e) family tree research and with the Jewell family research. DNA testing both family's has shown some very interesting results! I have a 65/67 DNA match to a Mr. Locke in England, he is a Gypsy descendant in England. He and I both are in a rare DNA group called Y chromosome Haplo Group H, which is rare in the world regardless our surname. Mr. Jewell is also in this rare DNA group, and he is a 66/67 DNA match to me. The Lock(e)'s and Jewell family's both came from England to Maryland and Virginia early 1700's. Both the Lock(e)'s and Jewell's ended up in Barren County Kentucky. Considering the rarity of this DNA group, it is very odd to find 2 family's of 2 differnt surnames who also happen to share very similar DNA to one another, and for both to end up in Barren County. Did they know they were Gypsy descendants? I don't know, that is a verbal history that wasn't passed down in the Lock family. But some of the Lock's were known Fiddle players, which does support they were aware of their Gypsy heritage. To date, we now know of 7 USA family's in this rare DNA group, Lock(e), Bailey, Jewell, Carter, Campbell, Hite, and Ruffin. All but Campbell have direct ties to early Maryland and Virginia, Campbell can only trace back to Tennessee 1800's. 2 of which have direct ties to Barren County Ky. I am very interested in hearing of any family's of the surnames; Carter, Campbell, Ruffin, Hite who have ties to Barren County Ky to Virginia and Maryland. It would be interesting to see if other family's of Barren County would share this rare DNA group besides the Lock's and Jewell's, and to see if the other family's share this same migration route. Or of any family's of Barren County Ky who have heard they were a Gypsy / Traveler family from England and Scotland. The Lock's have at least 7 known Lock / Hall marriages that I am aware of. Hall is another known Gypsy / Traveler family surname in England, but I do not know if this one Hall family is Gypsy or not. I haven't done any Hall family research in Barren County Ky. to know if they are all 1 family, or if they are made up of many differnt unrelated Hall family's? But now knowing there is 1 Hall family in England who are Gypsy, I have to suspect this maybe why the Lock's married in to the Hall family so many times, that some of the Hall's maybe Gypsy / Traveler descendants too? Happy New Year everyone! Donald Locke
