Reported in the New Orleans, LA Picayune on May 12, 1876, page 2: "Barren county (Ky.) items. Bowling Green Pantagraph: A little eight-year old son of Mr. Virgil Johnson, of our county, met with a most shocking and appaling [sic] death on Friday last. He was riding a mule, which became frightened and ran away, and the little fellow, in falling or attempting to jump, got his foot entangled in a chain which was fastened to the mule, and was held tight while the mule continued to run. His neck, legs and arms were broken, and his body and head were frightfully mutilated." Now, I believe this boy lived in Barren County, the wording seems to indicate that the LA paper picked the story up from a Bowling Green paper.
