Sandi Dr. Stanley Sides of Cape Girardeau, Missouri will be the speaker at the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society meeting on Thursday, April 24th. Dr. Sides, a retired physician practicing hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Sides began studying caves in the Mammoth Cave Region with the Cave Research Foundation in 1962. He is a Fellow of the National Speleological Society and has taught Western Kentucky University's Karst Field Studies. He is the author of numerous articles on the history of the exploration of the caves of the Mammoth Cave National Park and the author of "Diamond Caverns - Jewel of Kentucky's Underground." His current research emphasis is on Dr. John Croghan's experiment to treat tuberculosis in Mammoth Cave in the 1840's and the history of cave exploration and cave development in Flint Ridge. He will be speaking on the "History of Diamond Caverns," which involves the Proctor, Gorin and Underwood Caves and will also discuss the tuberculosis experiment at Mammoth Cave.
