Good morning listers as we celebrate Martin Luther King day. Charles has posted the genealogy puzzler for the week; click on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's Puzzlers and give it a try. Thanks to all who participated last week! Here is our news item for the day, taken from the New York Times, NY, NY and published Friday, 29 Apr 1870 on page 5: "A Desperate Fight with Outlaws - Two of the Sheriff's Posse Mortally Wounded. Louisville, KY., April 28. On Tuesday last, at Glasgow Junction, ninety-one miles south of this city, there was a terrible fight between the Sheriff and posse and two desperadoes named SHIVES, for whose arrest the Sheriff had a warrant. The SHIVES fired on the Sheriff and his party, mortally wounding two of the most estimable citizens of the county. The desporadoes then escaped, but the citizens turned out in large numbers, hunted them down with dogs and captured them. One of them was found to have been wounded in the fight. They were both placed in the Glasgow jail, under a strong guard, as the public excitement is so intense that it is thought an attempt will be made to take the prisoners from the jail and hang them." The item did not list the name of the Barren Co posses that were killed and I couldn't find a follow-up article. Does anyone know? Were the Shives from Barren Co? Any additional information is appreciated!
