Our server is having trouble - hoping this goes thru just once! I'm feeling a tad better finally but the get up and go has still "got up and went" (old IL expression). I'm working on two new books at the same time and trying to get caught up a bit. But, I've been reading the old newspapers again and have found some dandy items. I'm looking right now at references to Glasgow KY; haven't had time to spread out to other towns and counties on the lists. I have approximately 33 articles which I will be posting one per day until I run out and look for some more. Some are strange, some sad, some just informational. I searched from 1800-1900 only on this first try and decided to post from the oldest and working forward. Most of the items are in the 1870's and 1880's with one earlier: Dubuque Democratic Herald, Dubuque, IA. Thursday, April 16, 1863, p. 3: "Louisville, Ky., April 14. - Late on Monday night a squad of rebel cavalry under Harris, dashed into Franklin, Ky., and arrested the telegraph operator and carried off his instrument. They also broke open a number of trunks in the depot and carrying away the contents. "Persons from below report that a large force of Confederates estimated at 20,000 are crossing the Cumberland river near Lebanon, Tenn., preparatory to advancement into Kentucky. "Three thousand Confederates are near Glasgow, Ky., and are advancing on the place. "Morgan with a considerable force is in Smith county Tennessee, preparing to make another raid on the Louisville and Nashville R.R. As the Cumberland is very low it is expected that the Confederates will soon attack the rail roads, and there is considerable excitement along the route. "The 10th Illinois and Hawkins battery arrived today on their way to join Rosecrans. "A party of Guerillas entered north Middleton, Ky., and arrested 3 of the 14th Ky. cavalry." Another item tomorrow about Christopher T. Cheek.
