    1. [KYBARREN] DANIEL S. SIMMONS CIVIL WAR DIARY CONTINUED
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Continued from last week from "Jacob's People" by the late Kenneth Lee. "We left Corinth to the right, I supposed not over two or three miles. Thursday the 5th we marched through a little village called Danville, the next day through another little village and the next day through Rienzi and camped six miles beyond until Tuesday the 10th. Then we went back to Rienza and took an easterly course and passed through Jacinta, county seat of Tishmingo County the same day. We camped near Irika the 13th and drew money. We marched through town on the 14th on Saturday morning and in the evening we waded Bear Creek and came into Franklin County, Alabama and camped about five miles from the line. We marched through the county seat of Franklin County on the 16th and three miles beyond on the Tennessee River. we crossed the river at Jackson's Landing the 24th and camped by Florence, county seat of Lauderdale County. We marched through Florence the 25th. Friday the 27th, we marched through Rogersville, waded across Elk River and marched into Limestone County. We then marched through Athens, county seat of Limstone County and camped a day or two six miles beyond. We then marched another mile and camped in a nice bluegrass lot where we stayed several days. "Saturday evening July the 5th we marched into Madison County and camped by Huntsville, July the 7th where we stayed two days. We left there on the 9th crossed Hurricane River on a railroad bridge and camped by Brownsboro Depot the 10th. There we caught a lot of fish with our hands. We crossed Rock River and passed through another depot. Next we marched through and camped by Larkinsville July the 11th. Then through Scottsboro and Belford County seat. On the 12th we camped by a town in Jackson County. The 13th we marched within two miles of Stevenson and camped. We marched through Stevenson and Bolliver and arrived at Camp Battlecreek on Monday July 14th. We were stationed a good while in Marion County, Tennessee near Battle Creek on the Tennessee River three miles above Bridgeport. We were close enough to the Rebels to hear their drum beats and bugles blow. The Rebel pickets were on the other side of the river from ours so close that we could understand what the others said by hollowing across the river, but we were not allowed to shoot at each other. Some of our men swam across the river sometimes and would exchange little notions and such as tobacco and paper. We commenced fortifying above the spring at the foot of the mountain near the mouth of Battle Creek the tenth of August. "We left Camp Battle Creek Wednsday evening about dark August the 20th, crossed Battle Creek, marched over some very rough road and reached Jasper which I believe was the county seat of Marion County and camped until the next day. We left there the 21st and marched two miles up the Wilmac Valley (if I mistake not the name) and camped until the next evening. Then we had to counter-march back through Jasper and camped three miles from Camp Battle Creek. Each of these trips was after night and from Camp Battle Creek to Jasper is about nine miles. "On the 23rd we marched about three or four miles and camped until nine or ten o'clock the next day. Sunday the 24th we marched three or four miles when we came to the foot of Cumberland Mountain which was three miles to the top and several miles across. We camped on the mountain Sunday night the 24th in a very rough briary and bushy place. In going into camp our regiment took a wrong road and went a mile before the error was discovered. We were tired and sleepy. During the night a great excitement was raised in camp by some loose mules running through camp which I will not forget soon. Indeed I thought at first the Rebel Calvary had charged upon us as we were frightened out of our sleep." to be continued next week.
