Sandi The Atlanta Constitution June 2, 1910 He Slashed Throat While in Hospital Birmingham, Ala, June 1 -- Lucian Carden a conductor on the Louisville and Nashville railroad who has been in a local hospital for three weeks attempted suicide this morning by slashing his throat with a razor. When a telegram announcing that he had been injured was handed to his mother, Mrs. Malissa Carden, in Glasgow, Ky., she dropped dead. Carden had both legs cut off about three months ago and attracted attention by smoking a cigar while he watched the men pick up his legs. He smoked all the way to the hospital. ==================== NOTE: I have posted this many years ago but for the new people on the list, it deserves a repeat. Tomorrow I will post the 'Rest of the Story". Sandi Portsmouth (NH) Herald Feb. 3, 1911 Mourners Get a Scare Aged Woman Comes to life as She is About to be Buried Glasgow, Ky., Feb. -- Mrs. Jane Pitcock, 80 years old, caused a commotion in the mountain hamlet of Gamaliel by coming to life in her coffin at the funeral in the church. The lid of the coffin had been removed to give the mourners a last look as the supposed dead. Then the aged woman opened her eyes and stretched forth her hands in silent supplication to those around her. Some ran out of the church in terror, while others fell on their knees beside the coffin and prayed. The woman remained conscious several hours, murmuring of wonderful visions, then she again sank into unconsciousness which this time actually ended in death. ======================== The Washington (D.C.) Post Sept. 12, 19112 Cornfed Squirrels on Toast Glasgow (Ky.) Dispatch to Louisville Courier-Journal "Squirrel on toast" is the menu being enjoyed by people in this section who are willing to arise early and make a trip to some nearby woodland. For the first time in a dozen years the residents of Barren, Cumberland, Metcalfe and Monroe counties are enjoying squirrel in abundance; and, by the way, this settles the question of squirrels migrating. A few weeks ago it was next to impossible to find a squirrel in either of the counties mentioned, and now they are so plentiful that an amateur can kill several in a short time. The woods seem alive with them. At early morning and at late evening they can be seen perched on cornstalks, taking a meal at the expense of the farmer or running along the fence on their way to and from the cornfield. As many as 40 squirrels have been bagged by one person in Metcalfe county within the last week, and a report of 12 to 25 is not uncommon. Many people who have cornfields near the woodlands have to make trips around them night and morning to keep the squirrels scared off.
