    1. [KYBARREN] EARLY SETTLERS OF SKEGGS CREEK
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Taken from Backroads of Barren Co, originally published by William Daniel Tolle in local papers, not dated but he wrote from 1877-1920's. "Skeggs Creek [known primarily as Skaggs Creek] is one of the longest creeks of the county. It rises near Rockbridge in Monroe County (at one time Barren) and near the dividing ridge between the waters of the Cumberland and Barren Rivers. It runs a westerly course and passes through the southwestern portion of Barren County and empties into Beaver Creek eight or ten miles west of Glasgow. I am not as well acquainted with this creek and its inhabitants as with some other creeks of the county, but will give some of the early settlers so far as I have any information or knowledge of, beginning about the head of the creek. Thomas WHITE, James WHITE, Thomas BARTLEY, Jesse NELSON (he lived on the road leading from Tompkinsville to what was once known as Rays Crossroads), on through Randolph intersecting other roads which led to different places. One arm led to Edmonton. Jesse NELSON was a stock trader and at one time traded with the south in horses. His residence was a short distance of the creek on the north side. Sam McPHERSON was a citizen of Skeggs Creek country who was also a stock trader, but I think mostly in hogs and cattle; Jehu McPHERSON was another oldtime settler of the Skeggs Creek country. Harmon HOWARD, Jeff WALKER, Caleb NORMAN, Thomas HAMILTON and Ed BRAY were other old settlers of the Skeggs Creek country. So were George OLIVER, Allen GLOVER and Joe GLOVER. He at one time owned a mill on the creek several miles above the bridge on the Tompkinsville Pike; my understanding has always been that he built the mill from the state. Mr. GLOVER is said to be an infidel. The mill changed hands several times; and I think at this writing it belongs to Fishburn, a noted and up-to-date mill man for our county. Wren JONES at one time lived on a high hill north of the creek from where the above-named mill stands. He was an honest, upright Christian gentleman, a leading member of the Christian Church. He was the father of our townsman, William Henry JONES of the Republican [newspaper] and L W JONES, a house contractor and builder. "___ (unreadable) WOOTEN, Anderson WOOTEN, N W JONES, John DICKERSON, S H DICKRESON, John HARGROVE, Charlie HARGROVE (he served as constable of his district in the long ago), Moses NORVILLE, George WHEELOCK, Moses PEDEN, Lige UNDERWOOD, Allen SMITH, Benjamin M PAYNE, Basil G SMITH, William TRIGG, Ziba WILBORN, Seth KINCHELOE, George KINCHELOE, Batley WILKINSON. In the long ago Mr. WILKINSON ran a water mill and a short distance above the noted RITTER Mill and a short distance west of the little village of Temple Hill. The mill changed hands and at one time owned by James GENTRY and his son-in-law William WORD. They ran two sets of buhrs; a saw for planks and one for axe handles. The mill has gone out of use and has been for years." to be continued next week.
