Name: Russell Conley [photo-Black] Residence: Shelbyville KY Born: Covington KY Died: Wednesday, 5 March 2008, Jewish Hospital, Shelbyville after a serious and lengthy illness, age 88. Son of the late Bessie Smith and Russell Conley Sr. Widower of Ada Jane Groves Conley Attended KY State College, now KY State University, where he earned a B A in history, political science and sociology. Member Kappa Alpha Pse Fraternity and Tau Sigma Honor Society. Joined then the US Army where he served in the South Pacific during WWII and attained the rank of sergeant. Overseas duty was completed in New Guidea and the Philippines. He married Ada Jane Groves of Greensburg just prior to his military service. After service, he continued his education, receiving his M A degree in public school administration and school counseling and Rank I in school leadership at Western Ky University. Certified as a high school teacher, principal, supervisor, pupil personnel director, superintendent and guidance counselor. Did graduate study work at IN University in sociology and the University of KY in economics. Also studied business machines at the Cortez Peters Business School in Washington DC. First civilian job was as cler typist at the War Deparatment and the Pentagon in Washington DC, assisting as supervisor of clerks. His 2nd civilian job was as a school teacher at Glasgow Training School; also taught at Ralph Bunche High School, Liberty Street Junior High School and Glasgow High Sxchool where he served for 22 years and for 22 years as guidance counselor. He retired after 44 years of service in the field of education. Served as secretary, vice president and president of the Glasgow Education Association; member of the KY Education Association, National Education Association, American Counselors Association and Y Retired Teachers Association. After re-locating to Shelbyville, he served as a substitute teacher in the Shelby County School System and as secretary for the Clay Street Baptist Church. Member Johnson Chapel C M E Church in Glasgow where he served as organist, pianist and recording secretary. Preceded in death also by: Two brother: Lee and Smythe Conley Survivors: Two daughters: Lavonia Darlene Conley of Indianapolis IN and Debra Carey Jordan of Shelbyville Two brothers: Edwyn P Conley and Countee C Conley, both of Cincinnati OH Son-in-law: Albert Jordan of Shelbyville Two grandchildren: Albert "A J" Jordan Jr and Carey-Jo Jordan, both of Shelbyville Host of nieces,nephews, cousins, other relatives, former students and friends. Services: 1 pm Tusday, 11 March 2008, First Baptist Church in Glasgow, Rev. James Starks of Radcliff officiating. Pallbearers: Aaron Trigg, Joe Trigg, Winston Bailey, Fred Bailey, Jerry Francis and Michael Bransford. Burial Barlow Cemetery.
