Daily Republican, Decatur, IL, Tuesday, 16 Oct 1897, p. 3. "Used a Target Gun. Thomas A SMITH, employed on W H KRETZINGER's farm near Latham, in Logan county, committed suicide Sunday night by shooting himself in the head with a target gun, 22 calibre. The coroner's jury consisted of Messrs. W F HENN, N W HOWE, James W HOWE, R A MARKLAND and James LEWELLEN. They decided that the deceased "came to his death from a gunshot wound at his own hands with suicidal intent." SMITH was 26 years old, and his parents reside at Glasgow, Ky.
