    1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - EARLY SETTLERS OF SKAGGS CREEK CONTINUED
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Continuation of the Tolle history published in Backroads of Barren Co. Written in 1921 for this portion. "I said that D B RITTER, Sr. lived at various places in Barren county. At one time he lived at the village of Nobob, then he purchased the land on which Mr. J R TRAVIS now lives. He made, or had made, the brick that the house was built of that Mr TRAVIS now lives ins. Over the door is a brick with D B R 1824 on it, and in another part of the house is another brick with the impress of a large dog's foot, so we can see in four more years a century will have passed and one of the landmarks is still here. He also lived for a short time in the present city of Glasgow, then a mere village, but just what years - I do not know. He lived at one time at the RITTER old mill, known far and wide, under the management of D B RITTER Jr. He finally moved to Buck Creek where after the death of his second wife he married a lady by the name of BENEDICT. There they lived for a number of years; he finally dying in the year 1865. He and the mother of his eleven children lie buried on the A B NUCKOLS farm, which has been owned for several years by Samuel HARLAN but which was sold by him recently to a company of men in Glasgow. Signed G K RITTER. "The next farm below the RITTER Mill formerly belonged to Rev. Andrew NUCKOLS who in his latter days preached the two seed doctrine. He was in former years a colleague of Ralph PETTY of the Blue Spring Creek country and who preached together. This farm is on the south side of the creek and I have been told was recently sold for $30,000. I don't know who the buyer was, but Samuel HARLAN had owned it for a number of years and I suppose sold it. "A farm a short distance below the RITTER Mill on the north side of the creek, was the residence of an old settler by the name of William WELLS. He had a large shoulder and in order to distinguish him from another William WELLS, was designated "Big Shoulder" William WELLS. He was the father of Clifton, James, Bird, and Braxton WELLS; all dead at this writing. Clifton was at one time engaged in business at Roseville; Bird served as Justice of the Peace in this district for one or more terms. He also spent a time in California in the gold mines. I think his brother James did also. "In the early settling of the country, Lawrence GILLOCK, a Revolutionary War soldier came to Barren County and took up, or got in possession of, a large body of land otherwise, south of the creek, which extended from the well known as the Charlie RAY farm on the road leading from Glasgow to Roseville to the farm formerly owned by Andrew NUCKOLS, just below the RITTER Mill. The land extended far towards Roseville; and included the old Johnny ADAMS place on the right of the road beyond the RAY farm. Mr. GILLOCK was said to be one of seven brothers, all of whom was in the Revolutionary War. He raised a family of four children; three girls and one boy. One of his girls married Charly RAY; one married John ADAMS and one a BAKER. Of the BAKER woman, I have no knowledge of any descendants. William, one son married and raised a family of children who lived and died in the vicinity of Roseville; James, George, Simeon and Albert were sons of William, he also raised several daughters. James never married. "Rev. W G W GILLOCK as a son of William GILLOCK, and a noted Baptist preacher. He probably was instrumental in the conversion of many persons as any person in the county; and the building up of the Baptist church, in his day and time. He was twice married and raised a family of four or five children; one girl and three or four boys, all of whom are dead except one son, William, of Glasgow. William was a valiant soldier of the Orphan Brigade in the Confederate Army during the Civil War of 18681-1865. At this writing, 1921, he is living in Glasgow, KY and looking after the interest of some lumber firm. He is aging considerably and the ravages of time show heavily upon his features. Since the above was written I have ascertained that William GILLOCK Sr above mentioned, raised one son named Lawrence, who was next to the oldest son. Another boy by the name of Robert. Two of his daughters married; one married a DEVINE and one married Bedford LOWERY, who was the father of Melvin and Lawrence LOWERY, two highly respected citizens of the Roseville country." to be continued next week.
