Last night, at our historical society meeting, our speaker was Major Bobby Travis (ret.) who told us about the Barren County-Glasgow Veterans Wall of Honor. He, along with other citizens, had a desire to establish a wall in Glasgow honoring our soldiers from all wars. The wall is located on the square in the Beulah Nunn Park at Race and Washington Street and is beautiful. They currently have a little over 1,100 plaques on the wall and are attempting to have 1,500 by Veteran's Day. They know there are thousands more soldiers that could be represented on the wall Park City, Hiseville and I believe one more town in the county, have similar walls. The soldier's represented can be living as well as deceased from other wars; there are two Medal of Honor plaques. This includes all branches of service including Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, Merchant Marines, Army Air Corps, Army Air Force, etc. The plaque shows only the name and branch of service. Rank, decorations, years of service, theaters of service or other information may be used for future honors by the Barren County Veteran's Association. The cost for a plaque is $40.00. Applications are available locally at the Cultural Center, Chamber of Commerce and other locations throughout town. If anyone would be interested from this list, e-mail me and I'll find an address where you can write for an application. The main requirement is that the soldier lived in Barren County (at any time, could have moved from here), or died here or was a resident when in service. The application asks for the name to be placed on the plaque, branch of service, proof of service, name of person submitting application with address and phone number. Documentation would include a copy of an honorable discharge or, for older wars, a citation from newspaper, muster roll, any sort of military record. In the fall issue of "Traces", the official organ of the South Central KY Historical & Genealogical Society, I will be doing a feature story on the wall. If you have any questions, write me and I'll attempt to get the information for you. I receive no money from this ... as most of you know, I am an ardent supporter of our military and wanted to help get the word out only.
