    1. [KYBARREN] THOSE ONLINE FAMILY TREES

    3. With the advent of various on-line family trees, our "work" as genealogists has been made a lot easier ..... and a lot more confusing. As you have learned, I am sure, if someone enters information on a family tree that is in error, hundreds of other people take this as the Gospel truth, copy it and post it on their family tree. And, it is difficult to get the error corrected!!! Some services, such as ancestry.com and others do allow for little electronic "post it notes" which can flag the error; however, that will not be seen by everyone. They might not find the family tree with the error flagged, but all those who have copied from the incorrect source. But, it may be worth your time to go through all those trees. Time consuming yes and you'll likely find total repeats on many of the lines in error. However, one of these submitters could have stumbled upon something that the others didn't and give a source to prove it. I have found, in my own research, that I am listed on one site as being married 5 times to the same man with different dates, locations or variations of spellings. The submitter conveniently threw in a few death dates for my late husband, but suddenly he was brought back to life and I married him again later! Interesting! Sometimes people don't check very closely what they are entering. But, at the same time, I have found 20 or so incorrect trees on an ancestor and bingo, found one that gave me new information that proved to be accurate and helped me in my research. So - don't accept everything you find online as being correct. We're all human and make mistakes, some more gross than others! Take the time to check them out and you might find something you really need that will open up another whole area of searching for you!
