    1. [KYBARREN] NEWS FROM AROUND SOUTH CENTRAL KY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. What was happening in 1896 in south central KY (excluding Barren Co). Taken from the Glasgow Weekly Times except where noted. ALLEN CO: Mr. Lee ALLEN, probably the oldest citizen of Allen county, died at his home near Scottsville last week. He was ninety-six years of age, and had lived all his long life in Allen county. (25 March 1896 issue). HART CO: Miss Miriam VAUGHAN, aged seventeen, died at the home of her father in Horse Cave last Friday, after an illness of only three or four days. She was the daughter of Squire R. V. Vaughan, one of the most substantial citizens of Horse Cave. METCALFE CO: We take pleasure in announcing the marriage of Mr. Anthony Fraser, of this place, to Miss Mollie Bryant, of Willow Shade, last Wednesday. The ceremony was pronounced at the residence of the bride's father. Mr. Fraser is characterized for honor, truth and uprightness, and is an entertaining farmer, and has many friends. The bride is widely known as one of Metcalfe's best teachers. She is a young woman of charming personality. (from the Edmonton news to the Times, 13 My 1896 issue). Mr. Frank T. ROYSE died at his home Saturday night, near Sulphur Well. He had been drinking Monday and Tuesday, and Tuesday evening, Dick DAVIS who lives near Knob Lick, heard a noise and going in that direction he found Mr. Royse in an unconscious condition. He took him to his house and summoned assistance, and Wednesday morning Mr. Royse was removed to his home. The doctors pronounced that he had taken morphine and he remained in an unconscious condition until death claimed him. He didn't take the morphine with a suicidal intent as it is supposed, as he was in the habit of using the drug. He was a man of high standing and of a good family. He leaves a wife and six children. (13 May 1896 issue). MONROE & METCALFE CO: Mrs. Laura A. Perkins was born in Monroe County, Ky., April 23, 1873, and died at the home of her father, Squire J. H. McMURTREY, at Summer Shade, Ky., February 17th, 1896. The deceased spent the greater part of her life at Summer Shade, and was educated in the schools of that village. Possessed of a generous and social nature, she grew up loved and respected by all who knew her, and the place made vacant by her death will be hard indeed to fill. About six years ago she made a profession of religion and united with the Baptist church, of which church she was a consistent member until death. Jan. 11, 1894 she was united in marriage with Charles A. Perkins. The death angel carried away their only child, a babe of four months, about a year ago. About a year ago her health began to fail; her finall illness lasted eight weeks. Though she suffered much, she bore her afflictions with Christian fortitude and submission, and expressed herself as fully assured of a bright reward beyond cares and sufferings of this life. The last several weeks of her illness were spent at the home of her parents, that she might better receive the tender care of her mother and sisters. Her remains were laid to rest in Summer Shade cemetery, in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends, Feb. 18th. She leaves a bereaved husband, father and mother, sisters and brothers, and a large circle of friends to mourn her early departure. (poem follows). (25 Mar 1896 issue).
