I have been told that many years ago in court house records where both surnames of HILL and HITT are found, someone went thru and crossed all the ‘L’s in HILL so they all look like HITT. I believe this was in Culpeper Co, VA. This has been driving researchers crazy ever since. Noting corrections in Ancestry census records does help others. I was helped recently by someone in this same way on Ancestry. Sometimes they are incorrect but at least the correction is not a permanent change.
