    1. [KYBARREN] (no subject)
    2. No posts tomorrow. My dear beastie of a computer has developed yet another glitch and likely an expensive one. I'm trying to contact my repairman in the morning - I don't know how long I'll be down. All my files are locked up so I can't easily get to anything I want to post. I'll be back when I can! Sandi

H. GASSAWAY - BARREN CO NOTE: I have no connection, no further information and am not seeking additional information. 12368 BARREN CO – G. H. GASSAWAY – Gassaway, Lessenberry, Winn, Carter, Shankin 12368 Memorial and Biographical History, McLennan, Falls, Bell and Coryell Counties, Texas, Vol. 2, Illustrated. Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1893. G. H. GASSAWAY, a resident of Falls county, Texas, is a son of G. P. and Rebecca (Lessenberry) Gassaway. The father was born in Glasgow, Barren county, Kentucky, in 1806, and was a farmer by occupation. He was Mayor of his city a number of years, but living in the section where the two parties were about equally divided, and being an outspoken and ultra-slavery man, he incurred the hostilities of the other party to such an extent that his life was in danger, and he came to Texas. Grandfather Benjamin Gassaway was a native of Maryland, and his father was from Scotland. The mother of our subject was born near Petersburg, Virginia, in 1813. Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Gassaway were married in Barren county, Kentucky, October 1, 1827, and were the parents of five children, namely: J. T., deceased; G. H., our subject; Annie M., deceased, was the wife of Thomas Winn, also deceased; Wilburn J., an extensive dairyman of Waco; and Benjamin F., a Methodist minister, now located at Cleburne. This family was born and reared in Barren county, and in 1861 the parents came to our subject’s home in Texas, where the father died August, 1868, and the mother in September, 1872. G. H. Gassaway was born November 2, 1834, and when nineteen years of age began business with his brother, J. T., in trading mules, horses and negroes. They followed this business several years in the South, and in 1856 came to Collin county, Texas, and later to Falls county. They were extensively engaged in the cattle business until the brother’s death, in 1862, and since that time Mr. Gassaway has continued alone. He first became owner of the place, where his home now stands, in 1871, purchasing about 7,000 acres, but he has since sold 1,700 acres to the Waco Town Site Company. In company with H. G. Carter and son, and under the firm name of Cater, Gassaway & Co., our subject is extensively engaged in the cattle business near Lott, and is also a stockholder in the Marlin Lumber Company. At the breaking out of the late war Mr. Gassaway and his brother John were buying and selling cattle in large numbers. They made an immense contract with the Confederate authorities to deliver beef cattle to the army. After his brother’s death our subject continued to act as Government buyer, having power to detail as many men in his service as was necessary. He was married in Bell county, Texas, January 26, 1864, to Henrietta E., a daughter of G. W. Shankin. Mrs. Gassaway was born in Tennessee, in April, 1843, and in 1856 came to Texas with her parents, where they afterward died. Our subject affiliates with the Democratic party, is Master Mason of Carolina Lodge, and is also a charter member of this order. 1. [KYBARREN] BIO #12368 - G. H. GASSAWAY - BARREN CO
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. NOTE: I have no connection, no further information and am not seeking additional information. 1. [KYBARREN] CONDOLENCES AND NEW BOOK
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Opal Jeffries Anderson who died yesterday. Maybe you didn't know her but I believe some of you on these lists know her daughter, Judye Hafling. Judye has worked tirelessly for many years with the Metcalfe County Historical Society and is a dedicated genealogist. She has been a subscriber to this list for a long time as well as friend. Our prayers are with Judye and her family in this loss. Now, not being able to sit and do nothing, I've published another book which covers the entire state of KY. It is entitled "Can You Hear the Children Cry?" I became interested in this after completing the Spanish Influenza death certificates. It is a detailed study of 44 orphanages which existed in KY (some are in operation). Many of the orphanages in Kentucky opened to care for the orphans and widows left behind after the Civil War - and then the Spanish Influenza pandemic. The time frame is from about the founding of our state (and one entry while we were still part of VA) until 1930. I hunted for not only the history of the orphanage, but photographs of as many as I could find and a listing through census records of the orphans housed there. The latter is not easy as in the larger cities, such as Louisville, there were many orphanages and the children were listed not only as orphans, but wards and primarily inmates. With inmates also covering reform schools and jails, I could not find all of them, but tried to list one census year on the majority and more than one census year on others. I found approximately 2,000 orphans who are listed with their ages and state of birth. The book also takes a historical look at Orphan Courts, indentureships and the Kentucky Orphan Train. While KY was not on the route of the well-known Orphan Train, KY children were sent on it. Using citations from newspapers, State documents, books, etc. I've tried to paint a picture of the good - and the bad - life of orphans. Did you know that children were often raffled off for the price of a ticket? While not all of the multitudes of orphanages left paper trails, I included all I could find. These include Catholic, German, Baptist, Masonic, African-American and State run institutions. If you have any questions, you may write me privately. 1. [KYBARREN] SPECIAL NEWS ON 1850 BARREN CO CENSUS & REQUEST
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. I have just learned something very important about the 1850 Barren Co microfilmed census which you need to know. On some films, there are lines missing in Division 2. On other copies, those lines are there. Don't ask me how .. it's not a transcription error, it was something that happened years ago while microfilming. So, if you have a transcription of the 1850 census, check it and if the following is missing, please write it in. I have checked the corrected microfilm copy (on line). District #2, starting with the 5th line. 196-200 family is missing: Please add this information: Hervey W. Jameson, 40, male, farmer, born KY Martha Jameson, 37, female, born KY James Jameson, 13, male, born KY, attended school Mary J. Jameson, 8, female, born KY, attended school Joseph Jameson, 6, male, born KY, attended school George Jameson, 4, male, female, born KY Joann Jameson, 1, born KY All or some of the above is not shown on one microfilm record. The family right below is the Willis Galloway family; the one above is a continuation of a Montgomery family. I was alerted to this by a gentleman in British Columbia, Canada who is hunting for this Jameson family, believing it is his family. He is descended from James Jameson. He kept saying this Hervey & Martha were on the 1850 census - I couldn't find it. So he linked to the census and noted the statement about the missing lines. Here is what he provided: "My great great grandfather: [James] James Joseph Jameson on his marriage certificate in British Columbia, Canada in 1878 listed his parents as "Harvey & Martha Jameson" from Barren County Kentucky. Also this James who is believed to have arrived in BC circa 1860 was known all his life as "Kentucky Jim". Anyway I see in 1850 census a Hervey & Martha Jameson in Barren County with children one being James so I am thinking this must be the family. in 1850 would many people have lived in Barren County? [I answered] what is likelihood of this being his family?? I have a "find a grave" headstone for "Martha Jameson" in Elk City, Kansas died 1900 born 1814 which matches 1850 census quite closely and on this headstone it lists her predeceased husband as "Harvey Jameson" so i'm thinking this must be her. This James Joseph Jameson in the 1881 and 1891 Canadian Census records lists his heritage as Scottish." End Now - my question. Do any of you connect with this Jameson family? Any DNA testing? Whether Hervey died here is unknown yet; it appears he did predecease wife Martha who died in Kansas. I have a feeling, not yet proven, that the Barren Co Hervey/Harvey and Martha with son James is the correct one due to the information the gentleman has found. If any of you has information, would you please write me privately - or to the list, either one. Thanks much!
