    1. [KYBARREN] A LONGER EXPLANATION TO PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I'm going to do the puzzler a little different this time. I will send Charles Hartley an answer to put on line but I think this one needed a little larger explanation. My question was: You found your male descendant on a church register, but not his wife. How could that be? You gave me some great answers and I'd like to go through some of them. 1 - He wasn't married yet. That is a possibility; his marriage might have taken place later and the clerk hadn't entered her name - or showed her under her maiden name if she was a member. 2 - She was deceased. True. She possibly had died ... but in most churches, her name would still be listed (sometimes for many years) with the notation "deceased" and _possibly_ a date of death entered. 3 - They had divorced. Again, a possibility. But, in most church books, her name would still possibly be there with a line through it or some notation. 4 - She had committed a grievous sin according to church rules. Good thought. When this occurred in many churches, her name would still be shown with the notation "excluded." The terminology varied from denomination of denomination - in Baptist churches and others, this is the term used and normally the date of exclusion. 5 - She was not a member. Very true. She possibly had not joined the church. 6 - She was a member of another church. Very true. If you will read through the old biographies, you will find that in many instances the wife held membership in one church and the husband in another. She might have come from a long line of Methodists and he of Presbyterians - and they kept their memberships in the denomination of their choice. Pastors of the earlier years also served in up to 4 churches a month. He might join one of the churches - his wife might keep her membership in another of the churches he pastored. 7 - Only male members, or head of household were listed. No. Women were always listed. If you will think back of all the church rosters I have posted over the years, there were women! Some churches kept separate lists - they separated the male members from the female members in different lists. But they were listed - making it difficult sometimes to figure out which female belonged to which male and which ladies were single! But they were listed! Children were not listed until they became a Christian in Baptist Churches and others and had been baptized. Some, as in the Presbyterian Church would list the child and his/her parents when they were baptized as infants or confirmed in other denominations. In most churches of the earlier times, the clerk kept an active list of members. He faithfully updated this list annually or every few years. These were entered on the church books along with the minutes of the monthly business meetings. Thanks for your participation! I'll be coming up with another puzzler soon. 1. [KYBARREN] MONROE CO - CIVIL WAR DAYS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. This sounds *interesting*! If you are on another rootsweb list such as Warren, Hart, Monroe, Metcalfe, etc. please forward this to those lists. Sheila Rush, Manager, Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site, 38 Old Mulkey Park Road, Tompkinsville, KY 42167, 270-487-8481 sent the following notice: The 9th US Infantry (reenacting unit) is coming back to Old Mulkey June 14th & 15th! Their working Civil War camp is complete with soldiers and civilians. Unit drills, discussions of weapons, Sunday service, and a three round volley at the Tompkinsville National Cemetery (a.k.a. Old Soldiers Cemetery) are always part of their visit. But this year they've added a unique and rarely represented element to the weekend ... a Civil War wedding! This is the first REAL wedding of members of their unit, opened to the public for educational purposes. Period attire is not required to attend the wedding. However, period clad individuals will be seated first. The reception will feature period music and dancing. Also, *weather permitting*, wet plate photography will be demonstrated. For a complete schedule visit http://www.parks.ky.gov/calendar/details/civil-war-living-history-camp-wedding/21436/ For additional information contact Sheila at the number shown above. Note by Sandi: There was a write-up on this wedding in the Glasgow Daily Times. The couple met as performers in this re-enactment. 1. [KYBARREN] MONROE CO CAVES - CONCLUSION
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Due to a total lack of sleep last night (love those storms) I have nothing prepared today and my brain is too tired to think of anything. So, I'm going to finish the mini series on caves. In Monroe Co, in 1922, the following caves were listed, said to be all north of Tompkinsville. A rock house in sandstone on the land of Dr. E. E. Palmer, 7 miles north of Tompkinsville. Stains on the ceiling, flint chips among the gravel. Only 2-4 feet space between the floor and the roof; goes back about 20 feet - very cramped space. No man could stand erect in here. McCreary Cave: a mile north of Dr. Palmer's. Entrance is 60-70 feet across and goes back a good hundred feet. Two branches then start. Has a strong spring. On one side a ledge, no human evidence found. Belcher Cave: 7 miles NW of Tompkinsville. Also known as Mill Cave because a gristmill near the foot of the hill below it is run by the outflowing stream. Entrance is high and wide; vault if fully 100 feet across each way. Bedrock is exposed in places and the earth is not more than 2 feet thick. Cave on John Black Tuley's land on Meshach Creek, 6 miles NE of Tompkinsville. Two human skeletons wee found in a small opening which is also called Bone Cave. The room is no more than 10 feet across, not in a position for human residence. Thought skeletons were Indian. but might have been used for temporary camping. That's it! 1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO CAVES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Again, this is taken from the book _Archeological Investigations_, published by the Smithsonian Institute in 1922. We're moving to Barren County caves this week: PAYNE CAVE. This is better known today as Saltpeter Cave near Temple Hill, 9 miles SE of Glasgow..It is located in a bluff above Skaggs Creek. There are 3 entrances about 100 ft apart. Each entrance is broken into 3-4 columns, the entrances are not large. BEN SMITH'S CAVE: Hunters discovered this cave while looking for a fox den. It's tunnel shaped, not more than 6 feet high or wide, not suitable for habitation. This is located 1 1/2 mile south of Temple Hill. FORD'S CAVE: Located between Freedom and Mount Hermon & about 14 miles southeast of Glasgow. The original entrance was about 8 feet high and 20 ft. wide and 60 ft. long. The floor, earthen and level - large enough for people to move around. That entrance is now closed artificially by earth and stone except for 4 ft square where a door is hung. Older men claim they can remember when the floor was 20 feet lower than at present but seems to be an impossibility as this would be lower than the bed of Mill Creek which runs in front of the cave. The same men said there was saltpetre mining there. There is a spring just inside the entrance. This would have been an excellent residence for aboriginal people. THE ESMITH CAVES: These are 2 caves on Peters Creek near the Dry Fork post office, 14 miles southeast of Glasgow and would not have been well suited for shelter. The smallest one is not more than a foot high from floor to roof and fills with flood water after every heavy rain. The larger cave is above flood line but the entrance is about 2 feet high. If the floor was cleared off 4 feet deep it would be covered with water. BONE CAVE: Five miles east of Glasgow where human bones were found. At the time of the book's writing, no further information was known. The cave is on a hillside and entered by going through a narrow crevice using a ladder. There was a mound of rocks and trash and from there the ground goes continuously downward into darkness. The writer says that if human bones were found here he thinks they were thrown in or someone fell and was unable to escape. SLICK ROCK CAVE: Near the post office of Slick Rock, 7 miles east of Glasgow. A narrow crevice marks the entrance at the brow of a low hill. Descent is steep and rugged - and dark. LOVE'S CAVE: On Dr. Love's farm, 3 miles north of Slick Rock. Now used (in 1922) for storing apples and potatoes. The entrance is a large sink hole formed by the falling in of the roof which was at least 50 feet wide. Debris has block the cave in one direction. Descent is steep; floor is wet and muddy the entire year. Now - I have a question for the readers who are from Barren Co. Where was the Potato Cave that Franklin Gorin spoke of in Times of Long Ago? Next week - Monroe Co. - the last of the counties I'll cover.
