A sleepy, muggy good morning to you all. I want to thank those of you who have taken guesses on last week's puzzler; some of you really dug into English laws and four of you got the correct answer. If you will notice, after reading the answer, that most of our Kentucky ancestors who came from VA and were born before the Revolutionary War just don't show a middle name. I hunted for information on why, wondering if the name just wasn't recorded or something or if the parents couldn't think of any name that sounded good! Suddenly, after the war, here came the middle names. I'm wondering if parents did a little celebrating over one more little victory over the British when their next child was born and they could proudly give that child a middle name! In a couple of weeks or so I am doing a research tip on KYRESEARCH on names - including how some parents got around that law, strange first names, male names for females, etc. Charles has posted this week's puzzler and I trust this one will be a little easier for you. I want to challenge you to try these puzzles, to do some research and learn as you go. This is the essence of genealogical research - digging not only for names and dates, but trying to answer the questions all reporters are taught to ask - who, what, where when and why! I'm posting this to the list with permission of June Jeffries Watts, juneandbud@bellsouth.net, and ask that you remember June, a longtime list member, and her family in your thoughts and prayers in the loss of her dear father. Raymond got his first computer at age 80 and loved genealogy. He was also the uncle of another one of our list members, Judye Hafling. Our deepest condolences to both June and Judye and their families. I knew Raymond will be dearly missed. Sandi Raymond Jeffries, age 88, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness Sunday July 15, 2007. Mr. Jeffries was born in Knob Lick KY, December 27, 1918. He lived many years in Miami, FL. and retired to Blairsville, Ga. before moving to his daughter's home in Navarre, FL. in 2006. He was an Executive Chef, and later was in Real Estate. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner, member of the Mahi Shrine Club of Miami, and a member of the South Florida Orchid Society. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. In retirement he enjoyed genealogy. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ora Jeffries Reece, his father Lewis Henry Jeffries, and his wife, Johnny Mabel Jeffries. He is survived by his sister Opal Anderson, Knob Lick. KY; his son Joseph Jeffries, Hialeah, FL; his daughter, June Watts and son-in-law Doyle, Navarre, FL., and his daughter Linda Giblin and son-in-law Mark, Navarre, FL. His five grandchildren Greg Jeffries and his wife Janine, Tammy Majewski, Eric Watts and his wife Laura, Doug Watts and his wife Emily, and Scott Blackketter and his wife Natalie. His eight Great-Grandchildren; Tori, Samantha, Derek, Nathan, Brandon, Kagan, Ashlynn, and Brenna who were the light of his life. Special thanks to Dr. Fitzgerald and his staff at Hope Medical Group in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze FL., and the special people at Covenant Hospice of Pensacola whose help and kindness will always be remembered. Funeral services will be held at Butler Funeral Home, Edmonton, KY. with Rev. Carlos Anderson Officiating. Viewing will be on Wednesday evening from 3 to 8. Services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday. Just a few random notes. On Thursday, the 26th the South Central Ky Historical & Genealogical Society will be holding its annual picnic. To keep from fighting heat, bugs, etc. we meet at the Cultural Center where our meetings are held. The Society will provide drinks, plates and utensils; all you need to do is bring a vegetable or meat dish or a dessert. We will start at 7, it's just a time to get-together and relax and the new officers for the coming year will be announced. You're welcome to join us! My schedule of posting will become a little erratic sometime in mid to late August due to two things going on. I will be splitting out of here for a long weekend plus in mid August and going back to the land of my nativity again for a family reunion. Then, I likely won't have internet service et all for a time as sometime in August (late) I'm having some repairs done to the house - taking hit and miss a week. So if I don't show up some day, I might not have cable service. Finally, I have 4 winners so far on my puzzler for the week! I am amazed at how detailed many of you are about VA laws and what could have caused the situtation I described. I think we have all learned a lot more about our ancestor's lives before coming to KY!
