How very interesting to know the whole story. Since this happened in 1895, and when the "boy" was 17, certainly his life was spared and prison sentence shortened because of his age. Thank you for completing the info. Mary Alice ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com
Booker and Annie Bell were second cousins, and she was in a family way. She was 25 and he was 17. Annie Bell's brothers threatened to kill Booker if he wouldn't marry her. Booker was staying with Powell McIntire and late on the evening of Dec. 17, 1895, he took Powell's shotgun, went about half a mile down the road to Annie Bell's house and shot her through a window as she was sitting by a lamp. He then ran down the hill and across Glovers Creek and hid under a bed at his father Hugh Steenbergen's house. A hastily organized posse soon found him and were considering hanging him from a large ash tree on the old Gibson place but Johnny Pickett Harrison persuaded them to surrender him to the authorities in Glasgow. Desire for a lynching was again revived and on the 28th of December a large group of the Capital Hill populace proceeded to Glasgow with plans for revenge (and whiskey) on their minds. Realizing the danger to Booker, and others, Circuit Judge Jones ordered that Booker be transferred to the jail in Louisville. The Sheriff and his party were nearly caught in their dash to the train station with the prisoner but finally made it safely. Booker was convicted, and served time in the Penitentiary at Eddyville. I don't know how many years he spent there but I was told several years ago by an old lady who was related to Annie Bell that Booker was eventually released, went to Missouri, changed his name to Steinberger, and became a successful businessman. She went on to say that he never married, but did raise two orphan boys. I hope you will let me submit a C name query, since I did not submit any?last week and do not have any D, E or F names. I am looking for parents of Mary CARPENTER. I think she was born in Allen Co. in 1841 and died there in 1864. She married Hamilton Duke WADE in Allen Co. on Oct. 15, 1859. According to legend she died from smallpox contracted from a package that her husband sent home during the War. I have info about her children and descendants, but have been unable to identify her parents. Can anyone help? Good morning! Are you ready for another puzzler? Charles has posted the weekly poster; to make a guess, click on the URL in my signature line called gensoup and give it a try! Now - to the brickwall queries. From now until next Monday morning, you may submit ONE brickwall query for someone in your family tree whose SURNAME begins with D, E or F. They need to apply to the counties covered by this list ... either born here or came here. I appreciate all those submitted last week and hope someone helped you! I am limiting it to one query because this is a large list and I don't want it to become overwhelming to the readers. Have a good week gang! Hi Elaine O' I don't know if this will help. It is a link I received awhile back that shows pictures of grave markers in many cemeteries. I have photos of a large portion of stones there posted at: http://www.so-ky.com/cem/barrencem/A/austin-mtoliv/austin-mtoliv.htm Click on this link and when it brings up the cemetery listing, scroll to the bottom of the page. About 15 yrs ago I received a photocopy of a cemetery book done at sometime in the late 1970's that belonged to the late Eva Coe Peden. It was a bad copy and the title page was missing. Some time later I found about 100 pages of cemetery records at an area library and have had copies of them all these years, stuck in a file. I decided to start going through them and type them up into better order. I found a majority of them not to be complete transcriptions but they were not shown in that original cemetery book. I then contacted Charles Finn of this list who back in the late 1990's through 2002ish drove to Edmonson Co and transcribed a LOT of cemeteries that were not recorded in print - and updates to many who were. Charles sent me all of his files and gave me permission to publish them. I am eternally grateful to Charles, not only for his permission, but for the many, many hours he spent copying all these cemeteries. The finished product is 193 pages long, contains bout 853 surnames and over 7,500 individual entries. I have done them in a table format rather than the standard cemetery by cemetery. Now each surname is listed in alphabetical order with all the information that was found so the reader can trace their family immediately without hopping from index to cemetery back and forth. There are likely errors - there always are when trying to read some of these old stones. If I had a question on any of them, I so indicated. Charles put in additional information including a LOT of marriages and military information when found. On the updated cemeteries, I included all the names & information which included those who had died since the original book was published. The cemeteries shown are: Adwell, Alexander, Barlow, Beaver Dam Church, Beespring Missionary Baptist, Bell Key, Big Reedy Church, Bransford, Brownsville, Brownsville Church, Cedar Grove & Page, Clayton, Cole, Compton (John David), Cox, Cove Hollow, Cub Creek, Daniels, (Garnett) Davis, Denham, DIT Vincent, Duvall, Fairview Church, Ferguson (Black), Fishback, Fox, Friendship (Warren Co), Gibson, Good Springs, Gravil, Greenhill, Hawkins, Hawks, Haydon, Hester, Hill Grove, Holder, Holly Springs, Holton, Houchins, Houchins (Old), Hubsfield, Jaggers, Jake (Fred), Johnson, Johnson #2, Joppa Baptist, Keith, Kersey, Key, Kinser, Kinslow, Lambert, Doc Light, Little Hope, Little Jordan, Locust Grove, Luttrell, Meredith (Jack), Meredith (Watt), Mammoth Cave Church, Midway Baptist, Miller, Morris, Mt Pleasant, Mt Zion Baptist, New Home Baptist, New Salem Baptist, Nolin Church, Oak Hill, Old Brownsville, Old Guides, Otter Gap, Parker, Pierce, Pine Grove Baptist, Pine Grove Presbterian (just inside Warren Co at the Edmonson Co line), Pleasant Grove, Pleasant Union, Poplar Spring Baptkist, Priddy, Ramsey, Rogers (James), Sanders, Shady Lane Church, Silent Grove Church, Skaggs (Johnny), Slate Rock, South Union, Stevenson (John), Stockholm Church, Strather, Temple Hill, Union Light, Vincent, Vincent #2, and Wilkins.
