I apologize for posting this out of order when Sandi first gave permission for us to post these. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to see we were going in alphabetical order. So now I'm re-posting at the right time. My brick wall is Nathan MARTIN. He was born in KY in 1801 according to Texas County, Missouri census records for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. What leads me to Barren county is a marriage bond that was found in the book Marriage Records of Barren County KY 1799-1849 By Martha Powell Reneau 1984 page 170 Martin, Nathan to Ann MAGINNIS, March 11, 1827, Sur; James Martin. Md. March 15, 1827 by John H Baker I can't prove this is "my" Nathan, but the birthdates of his children who all came to Missouri with him seem to fall into place with this His children were: Margaret Jane b 1829 William J. b. 1831 (my 3GGrandfather) Phebe b. 1833 Lewis b. abt 1835 Susan b. 1838 Another researcher told me he once found a grave of an Ann Martin and a James Martin in the same cemetery and that Ann's death date wasn't long after the birth year of Susan. He thought it might have been Foster Cemetery in Warren County. I would like to be able to prove this is the right marriage and then from there discover Nathan's parentage and their origins. I would also love to find the cemetery in which these Martin graves are located. Elaine O' Hollister, MO
Good morning on another Oct. morn. I had a pleasant - almost - weekend - by going over to Bengal KY and celebrating the 200th anniversary of Friendship Baptist Church where my son-in-law is pastor. A wonderful time until I came home and my little dash lights started flashing at me. The car was overheating but not steaming and there are NO service stations between there and home. (I take the backroads from Green to Hart to Metcalfe to Barren Co). I threw the heater on full blast (being a mechanic's dau), limped in and threw water in the reservoir. I just returned from the garage - did no damage BUT they say I have leaks all around the intake valves and need a $600 replacement of parts (plus labor of course). So, I am not doing handstands this morning and am running behind schedule. Must be fixed soon, but am going to try to get a 2nd opinion! So - let me catch up! Charles has posted the answer to last week's puzzler; had a few guesses, most were correct and I thank you. I'm needing some better response or will put the puzzlers back on hiatus again. Charles has also posted my puzzler this week; you'll have to dig for this one but the information is available on line if you hunt! This week, I'm asking for your brickwalls for those whose surname begins with K through N. If you have problems with someone who was in one of the counties covered by these lists, send it to the list. Please put BRICKWALL in the subject line and the name (possibly the county if you know). I hope this is helping .... we all have our illusive ancestors!!! My Jameson BRICKWALL: JAMESON, Cary (aka Carry) (aka Jamison, Jimmerson) b. 1798 Added info: Known children of Caria Allen Jameson b. 1798, Barren Co., KY and wife, Jane Matthews: Rhoda Jameson (could this be after his mother?) Eliza Jameson George W. Jameson James Matthews Jameson Thanks for your patience, jimjusteson@cox.neet
Sorry, but I apparently mistyped: Caria Allen Jameson was born in 1798 in Barren County near Glasgow. I have no verifiable information about his PARENTS, which is what I'm brickwalled on. He married Jane Matthews, dau. of James Matthews and Elizabeth Strothers. Caria Allen Jameson and Jane Matthews Jameson lived for awhile in Glasgow after marriage and then removed to Gallatin, TN, where his father had the old Jameson Mill on Jameson Rd, reportedly. Caria Allen Jameson and Jane Matthews Jameson later removed to Greene County, MO, where he died. I do not need information on other Jameson families who lived in Barren County, unless there is a specific and known link to Caria Allen Jameson. I have James Jameson as his eldest brother, followed by Frank Jameson, then George W. Jameson. These are all from family letters or census information and not all totally trustworthy. Caria is listed as Carry Jamison and variations on census reports. It is Caria Allen Jameson's son's obit that says the grandfather was in the Revolutionary War, i.e. either on the Jameson or Matthews side. I know about the Matthews family of Glasgow and need no further information about them. jimjusteson@cox.net
I could try to help, but this is a bit confusing to me. I thought Cary Allen Jameson was a man, but then you say Cary Allen m. James Matthews, daughter of James Matthews and Elizabeth Strother. Is Cary Allen Jameson, b. 1798 a man or woman? Also, if a man, and Cary Allen Jameson was born 1798 in Barren Co., then he would not have been in the military in the Revolutionary War ("separation from England"). He wasn't born until after the Revolutionary War. I don't know if this helps, but in a bio about the HINDMAN family of Barren Co., there is information that Robert Hindman Sr. of near Cave City, Barren County, was a Capt. in the War of 1812, and killed at Vincennes, Ind. This Robert Hindman married Malinda JEMERSON. Malinda JEMERSON was daughter of George Jemerson, who married his cousin, Elizabeth Jemerson, both born in Louisa County, VA. George came to Barren County early, having served in the War of 1812 under Gen. Harrison. The JEMERSON family first immigrated to Fayette County, Ky, from Virginia, and about 1795 settled in Barren County. George's father, Robert Jemerson, an Englishman, was in the Revolution, and was one of the first men to enter land in Barren County, where he became an extensive landholder. Then there is a bio for George JAMESON, b. 1856 in Barren Co., the 3rd of four children of Robert F. and Eliza J. Wilson Jameson. Robert F. Jameson was a son of George and Elizabeth Jameson (see above), natives of Virginia and of English origin. Robert F. was born in Barren Co. and died Sep 1884, age 79 years; wife Elizabeth Wilson born Barren Co., daughter of John and Rhoda (Martin) Wilson, natives also of Virginia. It appears the JAMESON and JEMERSON family are the same. Hope this helps a little. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Justeson" <jimjusteson@cox.net> To: <kybarren@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2007 8:51 AM Subject: [KYBARREN] Jameson (still a) BRICKWALL > This fellow is still our top BRICKWALL: > Cary Allen Jameson, b. 1798 Barren Co., KY; father may have had a mill and been named James or John or both. Peters Creek Missionary Baptist Church was constituted 19 January 1830 by Elders John H. Baker, Thomas Scrivener and Richard Ragland and had 13 original members. Thomas Scrivener was chosen as the first pastor; Ambrose Kinslow the first deacon and Daniel Oliphant the first clerk. On May 3, 1838 it was decided to build a church house which was located on the property of Obadiah Britt. A new church building was proposed in 1858 to be located on the pike where the Tobacco Road intersects the pike; the current location. The original church was a little log building west of U. S. Highway 31E almost into Peters Creek and Big Barren River Valley. A larger church was erected in 1838 which stood about ¼ mile southeast of the present school building at Lucas. The 3rd building, also of logs, was located a short distance south of the previous land. The 4th building is the current one. As noted in the minutes of this book, in September 1970, the late Eva Coe Peden attended the business meeting of the church and was granted permission to borrow all the minute books of the church and re-type them. She typed up a rough draft of the old books and when I was given her files in the early 1990s by her late husband, he noted that she had planned on publishing the entire minutes of Peters Creek. In March 1993, I published the minutes from Book 1 which covered 1830 through 1872. In February 1996, I published Book 2 which covered January 1873 through August 1910. It is now my pleasure to publish the last 3 books that Mrs. Peden typed. Book 3 covers the time frame of September 1910 through December 1932 and saw eight pastors: L. D. Robinson, John Winn, J. S. Denham, S. T. Walden, J. L. Dawsey, J. H. Swan, C. V. Irvin and Baxter Powell. Book 4 covers the time frame of January 1933 through December 1950 and during this time Baxter Powell continued as pastor followed by J. L. Dawsey and then Cecil Britt. Book 5, the last one transcribed by Mrs. Peden, covers January 1951 through December 1970. Cecil Britt continued his pastorate during this time frame followed by C. G. Morrison, Garnet Martin, Henry Smith, Cecil Britt again and Frank Harlow. The most notable features of these last three books are the extensive membership lists shown at the front of each book. Many death dates are shown. The family names from earliest days continued to serve in the person of their descendants. The names Britt, Powell, Huddleston, Alexander, Berry, Bunch, Carver, Dawsey, Dean, Elmore, Holder and hundreds more appear on many pages. My disclaimer is that I have never seen the original books. If there were spelling errors by the clerk, I showed them as written. If there were typographical errors by Mrs. Peden, I would not know except for the most obvious and left as she typed them. Names are spelled many ways on the old pages of these books. If I have allowed errors to sneak through, I heartily apologize. If you think you have ties to or interest in this church, I will email you, privately, the 12 page (double column) index of the book. Please write me off-list and I'll send them to you as soon as possible in a Word format. The book will be available next week. Sandi
Richard Lewis (wife Sarah "Sally" Wood) died Barren Co. ca 1819. The wife "Sally Lewis" is listed on the 1820 Barren Co., Ky. census with 1 male under 10 years old, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 18-25, 2 females under 10, 2 females 16-25, 1 female of 45 and above. A son, ROBERT W. LEWIS is also listed on the Barren Co. census 1820 as a male of 18-25 with a female 16-25. Robert W. md. Sarah W. The census listing for Sally with four males in the household and the separate listing for the son Robert W. suggests 5 sons of Richard and Sally (Wood) Lewis. I have been able to identify 4 sons who were: Robert Williamson Lewis Fielding J. Lewis George W. Lewis William W. Lewis The male of 10-15 years old in Sally's household in 1820 I have not been able to identify. Does anyone know the name of this person, apparently a son of Richard and Sally?
My brickwall is my 5ggf, Richard JONES, who died in Barren County between 12 April 1833 and 1840. He had one known child, Sampson JONES (c.1771-before Dec. 1854). Sampson married Sarah "Sally" MILES on 20 June 1793 in Franklin County, VIRGINIA and they moved to Barren County, KENTUCKY between 1810 and 1816, where he acquired land on Little Creek.. Testimony of Richard JONES in his Revolutionary War Pension application contained the following information: "...he is now upward of eighty seven years old that he was at the commencement of the revolution a citizen of Brunswick county Virginia that he was three times drafted into the service ...he then removed from Brunswick county to Henry county Virginia was there drafted in Captn David Bartens Company...removd from Virginia in 1806 -- or 1807 -- to Warren County Kentucky &from Warren to Allen County -- & from Allen to Barren County where I have livd for the last Ten or eleven years...that he was born the 9th of May 1745...& further that he was born on Rapahanock River Essex County Virginia." In the 1810 Warren County, KENTUCKY census, Richard JONES' household includes one female over 45, one female 26-45, and one female under 10. Their identies are unknown. In the 1820 Allen County, KENTUCKY census, Richard JONES' household includes one female over 45, identity unknown. In 1830, Richard JONES is enumerated with his son, Sampson JONES, in Barren County, KENTUCKY. Who were his parents, siblings, his wife(s) and his children? I think some of you are confused on how to post your brickwalls so maybe this will help. If you are subscribed to the SCKY list you may post to that list. If you are subscribed to the KYBARREN list you post to that list. BUT, if you try to post to a list that you're not subbed to (one of the above), your email will bounce and you'll get an email generated by a robot computer that you have to be subscribed to that list to post. I've spent a lot of time today releasing messages to the list which is not a problem. When one of your emails bounces because of the above, I get a msg, have to go to the administrative site, read the post and decide if it's legit. If so, I've been releasing it so the list members of that list can read it. If there are replies on the list to you, and you're not subbed - back to the administrative list again for me. SO ... if you want your brick walls posted on both lists, you'll need to be subbed to both lists. I hope I haven't confused you!!! I'm looking for the parents of William S. Greer who was born abt. 1799-1800 in Va. He first appears in Barren Co. census in 1840. He was md. first to Elizabeth Runyon in 1819, and Rachel O'Neale in 1824 with whom he had the the following children:Bennett C., Joseph, William, Sarah E., Rachel L., Mary C.. He also had a daughter Cassandra (Ward)--- I'm not sure which wife was her mother. I suspect that Willam S. had a sister named Polly who also md.a Runyon. Wm. S. is mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Moran who is rumored to have been md. to a Greer and also a Clark before marrying John Moran. Even though I've tried for several years, I haven't been able to connect this Greer line to any other in Barren Co. Any information would be appreciated and I'd be happy to share any that I have. I'm sorry I missed the "F's" for William Ferguson, but I will send it for Catherine Gilmore. She was the daughter of Frances "Franky" EUBANK and Joseph GILMORE of Albemarle Co., VA. I have not discovered who William's parents were. Catherine "Caty" and William married 28 Oct 1793 in Albemarle Co., VA, and they were my 4th g-grandparents. They left Albemarle Co. about 1807 and moved to Sumner Co., TN. They were there a couple of years and then moved to Barren Co., KY in an area that became Allen Co. in 1815. He is listed in the 1810 Barren Co. tax list living on Walnut Creek but Catherine [Caty] is shown as head of household in the 1810 Barren Co. census. I'm told he cut his knee with a broad axe and died shortly after they moved to Barren Co. Catherine is listed on the Barren Co. tax list 1811-1814. On 3 Nov 1815 she married Benjamin Bailey, a local Baptist minister, and she lived to be almost 100 years old. [She was living in Allen Co. after 1815.] Their daughter, Frances Ferguson, is my ancestor. On 18 Nov 1817, she married Thomas Spilman in Allen Co. He was the son of Mary Massey and Thomas Spilman who came to that area around 1790 from King George Co., VA DNA testing on a descendant of Catherine Gilmore and William Ferguson has shown that William is part of the John Ferguson/Ann Stubbleson family of early Essex Co., VA. I can't say he is a direct descendant of John Ferguson, but he could have been a nephew or cousin, but there is a relationship with that family. I'd love to know more about any of these families and will be happy to share what I have. Best wishes, Sharon Clark Fort Worth, TX clarksha@verizon.net
