Tho a little weary from a long ride on the Glasgow Baptist Church bus; we spent a wonderful day traveling from Glasgow to Pineville KY and then to the Cumberland Gap KY and TN. The temps were wonderful, but the sun didn't come out which is a shame because the trees were turning beautifully. Our main destination was the Clear Creek Bible College in Pineville and I was amazed at the beauty of the area. This is my first trip any farther east than Columbia and it was wonderful to see mountains again (after living out west for several years). Our pastor, Bill Whittaker, served in this area for 19 years and provided a lot of information on the towns we passed by - Russell's Springs, Somerset, London, Middletown, Pineville, etc - he told of floods in this area, boulders chained to the top of the mountain etc. We then headed off for the Cumberland Gap but time restraints and a fully-loaded heavy bus prevented us from going to the top. After seeing the terrain, it is amazing to me how the early pioneers made it - not only through the Gap but eventually into south central KY. We drove through the Cumberland Mountains in a mile-long tunnel, coming out in Cumberland Gap TN - a beautiful old town. I hope someday soon I can return to this area and see more of the historic sites and take more pictures; there is a lot of history in this area including of course the Wilderness Road, The Thomas Walker State Park, Col. Sanders' first restaurant and museum; the remains of the Swiss Colony ... it was a great time. If you have vacation time, this would be a neat place to visit. Author: athling1 Surnames: Wooten, McKinney Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.barren/11891.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just a bit of information concerning some names in the obit for those interested. Marcus Wooten died is not buried with Cora Decker as one would believe when visiting the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Though his name is on the same stone as Cora's, it is Jim Wooten who is buried with his mother. Marcus is buried under a stone with just his name on it. Robert Wooten was shot and killed in Bowling Green after threatening to "whoop" a whole family of brothers. The shooter was sentenced. Rubin "Tennessee" Wooten was a professional safe cracker who was set up and killed by the law in Louisville in 1966. Ada McKinney was the wife of Clyde F McKinney. She passed October 1973 in Glasgow.
