    1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - MARTHA SPENCER PART 2
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. STATE OF KENTUCKY, County of Barren: The affiant, J. F. MORTON, says he was late captain Company F, Twenty-first Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteers. He was well acquainted with DANIEL SPENCER, deceased, who was a private in said company and regiment. He was a man of good character and made a good soldier. He performed all the duties of a soldier up to his death. He died of small-pox at Campbellsville, Ky., in the fall of 1861. If he was not so mustered it was because he died before the regiment was mustered into the service. He was in one engagement, the "CY HUTCHINSON" fight in Barren County, Ky. Affiant knew said Spencer well and makes this declaration from his personal knowledge of the facts and his recollections of them at this date. This May 15, 1882. I have no interest in this claim. /s/ J. F. MORTON, Late Captain Company F, Twenty-first Kentucky. Sworn to and subscribed by J. F. Morton before me this 15th day of May, 1882, and I certify that the said affiant is a respectable citizen of Barren County, post office Hiseville, Ky., and is entitled to full faith and credit. I have no interest in his claim. /s/ W W Franklin, Clerk Barren County Court. {Seal}. STATE OF KENTUCKY, Barren County, ss: Personally came before me, clerk of the Barren county court, State aforesaid, GEORGE M. SPENCER, who being duly sworn, deposes and says: I reside in Barren County, Ky.; my post-office is Slick Rock, and my age is forty-seven years. I was late private in Company F, Twenty-first Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteers, and am a son of DANIEL SPENCER, who was a private in the same company and regiment. My father died in said company and regiment at Campbellsville, Ky., on or about the ___ day of November, 1861. My father entered this company and regiment early in the war and was enlisted and enrolled and performed all the duties of a soldier. He was mustered into the State service, but he took small-pox and died before our regiment was mustered into the United States service. While our regiment was encamped at Campbellsville, Ky., my father was detailed to go to Lebanon, Ky., after some mules. At Lebanon he caught small-pox, of which disease he died shortly after he returned to camp at Campbellsville, Ky. About a month after my father died our regiment moved from Campbellsville to Green River Bridge, where all the soldiers of the regiment were regularly mustered into the service of the United States. My father drew his clothes and $13 and pay from the State of Kentucky for his services for one month. I came home on a furlough and father sent $12 of his money to my mother, MARTHA A. SPENCER, by me. I know he was recognized by the Government of the United States as a soldier from the day of his enlistment. He was in one fight before his death. It was the fight at CY HUTCHERSON's, in Barren County, Ky., in which Capt. Smith TAYLOR, of Company F, Twenty-first Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteers was killed. I have no interest in this claim. /s/ GEORGE M [his mark] SPENCER. Sworn to and subscribed before me by George M. Spencer, and I certify that said Spencer is a respectable citizen of Barren County, Ky., and is entitled to full faith and credit and that I havae no interest in this claim. Given under my hand this 17th day of April, 1882. /s/ W. W. Franklin, Clerk Barren County Court. Attest: J. B. LESLIE, M L PEDIGO. End of file.

    1. [KYBARREN] RELIEF OF MARTHA SPENCER - PART 1
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I think tomorrow is going to be one of those days so I'll do my Edmonson Co post tomorrow and type this article up tonight. Thanks to those of you who said they had connections with the articles I've posted! And before I forget, several have asked about the Hart Co cemetery book as to how many cemeteries are included. There are 335 cemeteries and over 22,000 names. 50th Congress, 1st Session, House of Representatives, Report No 3209. MARTHA SPENCER. August 8, 1888 - Committed to the Committee of the Whole House and ordered to be printed. Mr. LAIRD, from the Committee on Military Affairs, submitted the following REPORT: (To accompany bill H. R. 7125.) "Your committee, to whom House Bill 7125 was referred, find from the evidence on file in this case that DANIEL SPENCER was in the Kentucky volunteer service in November, 1861, as private, Company F, Twenty-first Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. A month after his death the regiment of which he was a member was regularly mustered into the United States service. The evidence shows that the purpose of enlistment and the constant intent of the soldiers was to enter the United States Army; and those living did so enter said service as soon as they were marched within reach of the proper officer, but not till one battle had been fought and the commanding officer killed. The present soldier is shown to have taken small-pox while on detached duty, and to have died of the same while on said duty. The claim of the widow for relief has been rejected on the ground of non-enrollment in United States service. But it is believed that the hardship in this case is such that the whole circumstances should be taken into account, and that this soldier's widow should have the relief sought. Your committee recommend that the bill do pass. STATE OF KENTUCKY, County of Barren: The affiant, WILLIAM SPENCER, says he is forty-two years old, that his present post-office address is Freedonia, Kansas; that he was late first lieutenant, Company F, Twenty-first Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteers. He was well acquainted with DANIEL SPENCER, deceased (who was affiant's uncle), who was a private of said company and regiment. Said DANIEL SPENCER enlisted in said company and regiment about the latter part of September or the first of October, 1861. He was never mustered into the United States service because he did not have the opportunity to be mustered. Our regiment was not mustered until the 31st day of December, 1861, at Green River Bridge, Ky. Daniel Spencer took small-pox shortly after he enlisted, and died of said disease, I think, in the month of November, 1861. But whether he died in November or December, his death occurred before our regiment was mustered into the service of the United States. Daniel Spencer was, however, mustered into the State service, according to my recollection, and received pay as such. He performed all the duties of a soldier from the day of enlistment up to the time he died. I have no interest in this claim. s/ Wm. Spencer. Subscribed and sworn to by Wm. Spencer this 1st June, 1882. J. B. LESLIE, Examiner, Barren County, Kentucky. I, JAMES B. MARTIN, clerk of the Barren circuit court, Kentucky certify that J. B. LESLIE, before whom the foregoing affadavit was made, was at the time and is now an examiner of the Barren circuit court, Kentucky, duly authorized to administer oaths, and that his signature as above appears is genuine. I have no interest in this claim. given under my hand and seal in my office in the city of Glasgow, Ky., this the 1st day of June, 1882. /s/ James B. Martin, Clerk, Barren Circuit Court. {Seal} "I certify that I am at present the postmaster of the city of Glasgow, Ky., and have been such for the past twelve years. I was late lieutenant colonel Twenty-first Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteers and was personally acquainted with Daniel Spencer, who was a private in Company F of said regiment. I knew said Spencer well for five or six years prior to the time he entered the United States service as a soldier in said company and regiment, and up to the day of his death, which occurred about the day ___ day of ___ 1861, at Campbellsville, Ky. He died of small-pox. He entered the Army from principle and made an excellent soldier while he lived. He was enlisted and enrolled and performed all the duties of a soldier but my recollection is he was taken sick and died of small-pox before the regiment had the opportunity to be mustered into the United States service. I was present with him just a few days prior to his death. I certify to the above facts on the honor of a Government officer. This April 4th 1882. /s/ JAS. C. EVANS, Postmaster, Glasgow, Ky. And I further certify that the said Spencer was present and engaged in the battle known as the "CY HUTCHISON" fight, by a detachment of the Twenty-first Regiment under command of Cap. Smith TAYLOR, of Company F, at which fight Captain Taylor was mortally wounded, and several others dangerously wounded. /s/ Jas. C. Evans, Postmaster. To be continued next post = Sandi

    3. Just a few notes ... In my series on pension applications, etc - I have the following yet to do - Barren Co - Daniel Spencer - Civil War Adolphus N Cabell - Barren Co (Cave City) Ransom C Hazelip - Hart Co Phillip H Emmert - Monroe Co Presbyterian Church & Green River Masonic Lodge No 88 of Munfordville - Hart Co. I hope maybe some of these will be of interest - or more importantly - of help to you all! As you know, I "run" the SCKY and KYBarren lists a little differently than many lists who just have queries and no input from the list Mom/Dad. I try to find things that you might not have access to many miles away from the counties covered. As of 1/1/2008, I started my 14th year of posting source data to the list - I pre-date rootsweb - was on the old Maiser lists which some of you are familiar with. That's about 65,000 posts I've made to these lists and the others like KYBIOGRAPHIES & KYRESEARCH. I'm on my 5th or 6th keyboard and 3rd computer after all this! I have been working for the past 2 months on a major project which I just completed over the holidays. Many years ago, in the early 90's I published 5 volumes of Hart Co cemeteries - taken primarily from the records of the late Judge Cann of Hart Co, Eva Coe Peden, and various records provided by WKU library. I was never pleased with them as there were many differences in the list, names skipped, etc, and many pages were dedicated to corrections. So - I decided to re-do all 5 volumes into one and I think I recognize most of the Hart Co names! I did it in a table format, with the names listed alphabetically. Columns include the name, birth date, death date, comments and cemetery in which buried. The comments field contains things such as military service, parents' names, sometimes children and grandchildren's names, some marriages (if shown on the stone), civic organization, comments by Judge Cann, etc. Then I did a cross-reference index to the cemeteries so if the reader wishes to see who else is buried in that cemetery they can flip to those pages. Also included are about 12 pages of maps showing the locations of most of the cemeteries, maps of 3 cemeteries showing the various sections and indicating in the comments field which section in which they were buried (thanks to Ray Green of the list). Also, there are about 30 pages of write-ups on the cemeteries - locations, information on some of the people buried there, etc. Thanks to Edith Bastin and Judy Lawler (fearless cemetery transcribers of Hart Co), the book has many updated deaths up into the 2000's (as in year!) on cemeteries they have re-catalogued. The book ended up over 440 pages and I'm typed out! But, finally, there is a total printed copy of the known burials - many of these stones copied in the 1960's by Judge Cann can no longer be found and/or read. If you would like more information, contact me privately. My next project, hopefully, is to get back to the Barren Co court house and start transcribing more deeds, starting with Book O. And, I'll be looking for new material to post to the list also! I wish you all great success in 2008! CHINOWTH, who, being by me duly sworn according to law, says that he is a resident of Barren County, Ky., and that his age is 48 years; that he was late a 1st Lieut. in Co. E, 9th Ky. Vols., and is well acquainted with Henry ISENBERGE; that in the fall of 1861 affiant's father, A. S. CHINOWTH, established a recruiting camp in Barren County , known as Camp Joe UNDERWOOD [note this would be named for Judge Joseph Rogers Underwood, skg]; that in about Sept. the said Henry ISENBERGE enlisted (repeat of story)... that sometime in June, 1862, the said A. S. CHINOWTH, Capt. Co. E, 9th Ky. Vols., received a communication from the said ISENBERGE accompanied by a physician's certificate of disability, setting forth the facts that the said ISENBERGE was unfit for military service; in consequence of which the said Capt. A. S. CHINOWTH notified the said ISENBERGE to remain at home until called for. His health continued bad and he was never ordered to report for duty. Affiant further states that he knows these facts by being a member of Company E, 9th Regt. Ky. Vols, from its organization until April, 1863, and being in camp when claimant was captured, and serving as orderly sergeant at the time claimant was notified to remain at home until called for; and further that affiant did the correspondence by order of the said Capt. 3. This is how his name is spelled on a report called military affairs, Serial-Set-ID 2885, H.rp.3367: Jan 6, 1891 from which I quote below: "State of Kentucky, County of Barren: On this 27th day of August, 1889, personally came before me, a clerk of the county court in and for the county and State aforesaid, I. N. CHINOWTH, of Eighty-eight, Ky., and whose age is 47 years, and Samuel C. STOUT, aged 52 years, a resident of Glasgow, Ky., and Daniel J. STOUT, aged 56 years, a resident of Temple Hill, Ky., who, being by me duly sworn, say they are well acquainted with Henry ISENBURGH, enlisted in Co. E, 9th Ky. Infty. Vols. on or about Sept., 1861, and took the oath of enlistment, but before he had an opportunity of being mustered into the U.S. service, the company in which he enlisted was attacked by a regiment of Confederate cavalry, about Oct. 26th, 1861, and the said ISENBURGH, without any fault or improper conduct upon his part, was captured by said Confederates and conveyed to Southern prisons, where he remained in close confinement until about the 14th day of June, 1862, when he was released from said imprisonment and returned to his home, in such a state of health that rendered him forever unfit for military service. They further state that they know these facts by reason of being members of said company as 1st and 2nd lieutenants, and that they have no pecuniary interest in this claim. /s/ I. N. CHINOWTH, Late 1st Lieut. Co. E, 9th Ky. Vols. & Capt. Co. A, 37th Ky. Vols. /s/ D J STOUT, Late 2nd Lieut. Co. E., 9th Ky. Vols. /s/ Samuel C STOUT, 2d Lieut, Co. E., 9th Regt. Ky. Vol. Inf. Sworn to and subscribed before me by I. N. CHENOWTH, Samuel C. STOUT & Daniel J. STOUT, whom I certify respectable and entitled to credit, as witnesses, and I certify that I am not interested in this matter. Given under my hand and seal of office this 27 day of August, 1889. /s/ J. T. WOOTEN, Clk. Barren Co. Ct. Eighty-eight, KY., Feb. 21st, 1888. Addressed to the Hon. H. F. FINLEY, M.C., Washington, D.C.: Dear Sir: I write you in the interest of my friend and comrade, Henry ISENBERGE. [sic] He desires some relief from your honorable body. The facts in his case are briefly as follows: My father, A. S. CHINOWTH, established a recruiting camp in Barren County in Sept. 1861, for the purpose of enlisting men for the U. S. service. When the company was about completed we were attacked by a regiment of the enemy and driven from our camp. Several of our men were captured; among the number was my friend ISENBERGE. He was carried a captive to Southern prisons, and remained in those horrible pens until in June, 1862, when he was released and came home a bodily wreck. ISENBERGE enlisted in good faith and took the oath of enlistment. He also reported to my father as Capt. Co. E, 9th Ky. Vols, by letter from himself and neighbors setting for his condition, which was entirely unfit for military duty; consequently he was never mustered into the U. S. service, and his name does not appear on the rolls of said Co. E, 9th Ky. Vols. on file in the Adjutant Gen. Office at Washington City. I think ISENBESRGE ought to have relief, as he is totally disabled to obtain a living by manual labor, by reason of confinement and bad treatment in Southern prison pens; hence we appeal to your honorable body for such relief. I will further state that ISENBERGE is an honorable, good citizen, and anything you may find in your hearts to do for him will be appreciated by a deserving comrade and your humble friend. /s/ . N. CHINOWTH, Late 1st Lieut. Co. E, 9th Ky., and Capt. Co A, 37th Ky. State of Kentucky, County of Barren, ss: On this ___ [blank] day of March, 1888, personally came before me as clerk of the county court in and for aforesaid county, Samuel PIERCY, aged 45 years, a resident of Barren County, Kentucky, who, being by me duly sworn according to law, says that he is well acquainted with Henry ISENBERGE; that they enlisted at Camp Joe UNDERWOOD, Barren County, Ky., in the fall of 1861. Some weeks after their enlistment their command was attacked and routed by the enemy, and he and this claimant, Henry ISENBERGE, was captured by the enemy, on or about the 26th day of Oct., 1861, and was conveyed to Southern prisons; was first confined in prison at Bowling Green, Ky., thence to Nashville, Tenn., where we remained in jail for 8 weeks without any fire; thence to Salsberry, N. C., where we remained until the last of May, 1862, when we was sent to Washington, N. C., for exchange, the claimant leaving Salsberry some 2 or 3 days before this affiant. I further state, that when the said Henry ISENBERG left Salsberry he was in a wretched condition from exposure incident to a life in Southern prisons, a perfect skeleton from every and general debility, and I know from personal knowledge that aclaimant was entiredy unfit for any duty whatever when leaving Salsberry, the last of May, 1862. He further states that he knows the facts above stated from personal knowledge by reason of being associated with said ISENBERGE when a prisoner, being captured at the same time, and continually with him as a prisoner from the time of our capture until the said ISENBERGE left Salsberry, N. C., about the last of May, 1862; and that he has no interest directly or indirectly, in the prosecution of this claim, and that his P. O. address is Eighty-Eight, Barren County, Ky. /s/ Samuel Piercy. to be concluded next post. 2. "These matches are of little value in proving later relationships" That isn't exactly true G. Lee, with the use of the paper records tracing the family tree, with the use of DNA testing the male lines can benefit us by showing us a direct descendantcy back to a common male ancestor. That paper trail or that kinship doesn't stop at our brick walls, and by pointing us back in the direction of another branch who shares the same Y chromosome, can help us search the paper trail in the right direction again. Depends on later relationships you are talking about. If you are talking of before the existance of surnames, of course DNA testing is limited, as is the paper trail records. But being able to trace in to England in the 1500's and 1600's is very obtainable as there are ample records that has survived. If you want to focus on what isn't obtainable, ok with me. But many of us are going to focus on what can be obtainable with the paper records with the use of DNA testing. Right now as it stands, I only have about a 80 year span that seperates my lineage to my British cousins lineage. An 80 year span is very obtainable! It is only a matter of finding the right records to be able to connect the 2 branches back together. If we only look at the years prior to the use of surnames, you make it sound so bleak. lol That isn't the focus on DNA testing for most anyway, most are only interested in finding connections after the existance of surnames. Yes some folks only focus on Haplo Groups because that is something that they like looking at and studying, and I have no problem with that study. Haplo Groups represents our DNA 1000's of years ago, not current history. Don

    3. Please, take the DNA discussion off the list. This isn't a DNA discussion list, and tho I know it's interesting, list owners can step in on DNA discussions and ask them to write each other privately. Maybe all of you can share some good information .... I'm not upset, just asking you all to switch subjects for me! 3. G. Lee said..... " These matches are of little value in proving later relationships.. DNA is only revelant when surnames are the same or a spelling variant of the name.." Fortunately, we may entertain opposite opinions. Proving genetic surname relationships - especially sorting out families of the same surname living 300 years ago - is exactly why millions of us participate in the Ydna surname projects. I have no interest in identifying modern relations, even tho it can easily be done; my interest is proving exactly which early immigrant Scot Anderson, Campbell, Thompson, etc, we descend from - which is the objective. We now know many of these same-named early Virginians were not related and can be eliminated from our lineage. If you have not identified your paternal line immigrant or have no interest in pinpointing a specific man or family group 300 years ago (surnames were indeed used in the US), of course you would consider Ydna of no value. I personally consider Mtdna (female line) of no value, no interest to me (U4, northern European). In reading the old 1700s records (court orders especially), it is obvious there were many cases of bastardy, adultry, orphan binding, etc., which confused genetic lineages. Counties, especially Augusta, Frederick, Prince William, Fairfax and others.. I would guess that most all families of these surnames migrated from Va. to Kentucky.. As to the DNA of these families, tests will show that many of these families have very good matches due to decendency from ancient families before surnames came into use.. These matches are of little value in proving later relationships.. DNA is only revelant when surnames are the same or a spelling variant of the name.. However, it is interesting to speculate about your ancient ancestors... GLH G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    1. [KYBARREN] Lock(e), Jewell, Bailey, Carter, Campbell, Ruffin, Hite
    2. Things are starting to get very interesting with the Lock(e) family tree research and with the Jewell family research. DNA testing both family's has shown some very interesting results! I have a 65/67 DNA match to a Mr. Locke in England, he is a Gypsy descendant in England. He and I both are in a rare DNA group called Y chromosome Haplo Group H, which is rare in the world regardless our surname. Mr. Jewell is also in this rare DNA group, and he is a 66/67 DNA match to me. The Lock(e)'s and Jewell family's both came from England to Maryland and Virginia early 1700's. Both the Lock(e)'s and Jewell's ended up in Barren County Kentucky. Considering the rarity of this DNA group, it is very odd to find 2 family's of 2 differnt surnames who also happen to share very similar DNA to one another, and for both to end up in Barren County. Did they know they were Gypsy descendants? I don't know, that is a verbal history that wasn't passed down in the Lock family. But some of the Lock's were known Fiddle players, which does support they were aware of their Gypsy heritage. To date, we now know of 7 USA family's in this rare DNA group, Lock(e), Bailey, Jewell, Carter, Campbell, Hite, and Ruffin. All but Campbell have direct ties to early Maryland and Virginia, Campbell can only trace back to Tennessee 1800's. 2 of which have direct ties to Barren County Ky. I am very interested in hearing of any family's of the surnames; Carter, Campbell, Ruffin, Hite who have ties to Barren County Ky to Virginia and Maryland. It would be interesting to see if other family's of Barren County would share this rare DNA group besides the Lock's and Jewell's, and to see if the other family's share this same migration route. Or of any family's of Barren County Ky who have heard they were a Gypsy / Traveler family from England and Scotland. The Lock's have at least 7 known Lock / Hall marriages that I am aware of. Hall is another known Gypsy / Traveler family surname in England, but I do not know if this one Hall family is Gypsy or not. I haven't done any Hall family research in Barren County Ky. to know if they are all 1 family, or if they are made up of many differnt unrelated Hall family's? But now knowing there is 1 Hall family in England who are Gypsy, I have to suspect this maybe why the Lock's married in to the Hall family so many times, that some of the Hall's maybe Gypsy / Traveler descendants too? Happy New Year everyone! Donald Locke
