    3. After spending an unusually stormy day in south central KY with some damages in the area, thought I would pass on some information. As programs chairman for the South Central KY Historical and Genealogical Society, I have been attempting to line up speakers for 2008. We meet the 4th Thursday night of each month (except December) at the South Central KY Cultural Center, 200 Water Street in Glasgow. The meetings start at 7 pm, no charge for attendance, free parking and glorious facilities. If you haven't visited the Cultural Center and the museum and are in Glasgow, please stop in!!! So far I have the following confirmations for programs and if you're in the area, come visit us! Jan: Shannon Jefferies of Metcalfe Co has formed a Civil War re-enactment group in the area and will be speaking of the group, looking for civilian volunteers to participate in a re-enactment - Confederate. He will be in full uniform and sharing Civil War stories from the area. Feb: Judge Mitchell Nance of Glasgow will be speaking about Cumberland Co sights and events. Mar: Jonathan Jeffries, Kentucky Library at Western KY University, will be sharing information about Abraham Lincoln as the state kicks off a two-year salute to our native son. His program includes memorials and honors bestowed to Lincoln after his death. May: Gary Bardeaux of Diamond Caverns, a cave photographer, will present a program on using Photoshop to enhance and restore your old family photographs. He'll explain some of the functions of Photoshop in working with old tintypes and faded family treasures. Also confirmed but no date set: Betty Gorin-Smith of Taylor Co, will be with us in regard to her multi-award winning book "Morgan is Coming". She is a Civil War expert and has put together a book that is acclaimed throughout as the most thorough look at the life of and battles of John Hunt Morgan. Also, Mike Watson, Adair Co expert and author, has agreed to speak with us this year. I am awaiting confirmation on the possibility that Sue Lynn McDaniel of Western can present her program on Leap Day and the Courting Customs of Early Kentucky - which would be great! I'll post other information as I receive confirmations. I will also be in Frankfort KY on Saturday, April 12th and speaking before the KY Historical Society and the KY Genealogical Society. I will be doing a program on Beginning Genealogy at the KY Historical Society headquarters there. On Saturday, Feb 2nd, I will be speaking at the Mary Wood Weldon Library in Glasgow on part 3 of my series of genealogy techniques, and again on April 19th for the final class which will be on cemetery research, reading dates on tombstones, etc. You're welcome to sit in on these classes too, no charge. See you Monday! 1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - RANSOM C HAZELIP PENSION
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I only have a few of these left so will be finishing up the series next week sometime. 54th Congress, 1st Session, House of Representatives, Report No 646. March 5, 1896. Committed to the Committee of the Whole House and ordered to be printed. Mr. Anderson, from the Committee on Invalid Pensions, submitted the following REPORT: (To accompany H.R. 5050).] "The Committee on Invalid Pensions, to whom was referred the bill (H.R. 5050) granting a pension to Ransom C HAZELIP, report as follows: Claimant alleges that in February, 1862, he enlisted in Company G, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry, resigning the position of county and circuit court clerk to do so; that he went with the regiment, doing regular service, as did the other members of the company, until the battle of Shiloh, in which he took part; that in said fight he was injured by concussion of a shell, causing impairment of hearing, most severe in the left ear. After the battle, while camping on the battle ground, he contracted chronic diarrhea, by which he was reduced almost to a skeleton. He had joined the regiment after its muster in, and so he had not been mustered in, and was permitted to go home. As soon as he recovered to a sufficient extent to do so, he again entered the service, this time as first lieutenant Company B, Thirty-fifth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, and while in this organization, in July, 1864, went out from Munfordville, Ky., on a scout, and from the hardship and exposure on that trip contracted something like rheumatism and disease of kidneys. He now asks that he be pensioned by special act for impaired hearing and chronic diarrhea, contracted while serving with Company G, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry, and results thereof, and for rheumatism and disease of the kidneys, and disease of heart and stomach, results, contracted while first lieutenant Company B, Thirty-fifth Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry. He asks this special act because he has no title under existing law for the disabilities incurred while serving with the Eleventh Kentucky Infantry. He is totally disable for manual labor and in need of the pension. "The sworn testimony of Watson FARRIS, Lex. HAYES and William L HAZELIP who are shown by the records of the War Department to have been in Company G, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry, and present, corroborates the claimant's allegations as to disabilities incurred while service with Company G, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry; and that of James C. KINKADE, Charles W DECKER, John W HAYES, Samuel P YORK and Andrew J HACK, corroborates his allegations as to incurrence of disabilities while first lieutenant Company B, Thirty-Fifth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, and their testimony, together with that of Dr. S JOHNSON and A B STATON, and Mr. George W OLLER, shows the continuance of his disabilities since discharge, and that he is now totally disabled for manual labor. "From the evidence presented your committee believe his disabled condition to be due to his service in the war, and they recommend that the bill be amended as follows: "Amend the title by striking out all of it except the words 'A bill granting a pension to Ransom C HAZELIP." Amend the bill by striking out in line 6 the words "late a private soldier of," and inserting in lieu thereof the words, "who served with;" and by striking out in line the word "fifty" and inserting in lieu thereof the worth 'Thirty;" and that as amended the bill do pass." This was filed with Barren Co pension papers - I do not find his burial location. Any more information is appreciated! Letter from the Chief Clerk of the Court of Claims Transmitting a copy of the findings of the court in the case of Presbyterian Church and the Green River Masonic Lodge No. 88, of Munfordville, KY., against the United States. December 10, 1915 - Referred to the Committee on Claims and ordered to be printed. "Court of Claims, Clerk's Office, Washington, November 3, 1915. Hon. Thomas R. MARSHALL, President of the Senate. Sir: Pursuant to the order of the court, I transmit herewith a certified copy of the findings of fact filed by this court in the aforesaid cause, which case was referred to this court by resolution of the United States Senate under the act of March, 1887, known as the Tucker Act. I am, very respectfully, yours, /s/ Saml. A. PUTMAN, Chief Clerk Court of Claims. "Statement of Case. This is a claim for use and occupation alleged to have been furnished to the military forces of the United States during the Civil War. On the 2d day of March, 1907, the United States Senate referred to the court a bill in the following words: [S. 7032, Fifty-ninth Congress, second session]. "A Bill for the relief of the Presbyterian Church and the Green River Masonic Lodge, Numbered eighty-eight, of Munfordville, Kentucky. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to the trustees of the Presbyterian Church and the treasurer of the Green River Masonic Lodge, Numbered Eighty-Eight, of Munfordville, Kentucky, the sum of $1,200, in full compensation for the occupation, use and incidental injury to the building jointly owned by said church and lodge by the United States military forces during the Civil War. "The officers of said church and lodge appeared in this court March 23, 1907, and filed their petition, in which it is substantially averred that - During the late Civil War the military authorities of the United States took possession of the well-constructed brick building of two stories, about 60 by 26 feet in size, the first story owned and occupied by the Presbyterian Church, the second story by the Green River Masonic Lodge, No. 88, and occupied the lower story as a hospital for several months and the upper story as headquarters by different military officers for about two years; that the reasonable rental value of said property during said occupation, including the repairs necessary to restore said property to the same condition as before said occupation, was the sum of $1,200, for which no payment has been made; that the claimants have at all times borne true allegiance to the Government of the United States, and have not in any way voluntarily aided, abetted, or given encouragement to rebellion against the said Government. The case as brought to a hearing on loyalty and merits on the 3d day of February, 1908. Coldren & Fenning appeared for the claimants, and the Attorney General by Percy M Cox, his assistant and under his direction, appeared for the defense and protection of the interests of the United States. The court, upon the evidence and after considering the briefs and arguments of counsel on both sides, makes the following: Finding of Fact. The evidence does not establish to the satisfaction of the court that the claimants were the owners of the property alleged in the petition, for the use and occupation of which damages and compensation are sought. By the Court. Filed February 10, 1908, A True copy. Attest this 3d day of November, 1915 {seal} /s/ Saml. A Putman, Chief Clerk Court of Claims." It appears that the government rejected the claim of the church and lodge since they couldn't prove they owned the building!!
