I've been meaning to pass this on again. If you don't have anything to do today, go check out the State of KY site on the web ...... the URL is: http://sos.ky.gov/land/ This is the part of their site that deals with lands - it has a wonderful description of how the settlers obtained lands, the patent process, Rev War soldiers who bought land, the Tellico lands, lands south of the Green River, Treasury Warrants (constantly being added to). You can search a LOT of files and in some, can print off a copy of the actual document. I spent a couple of hours last night going over the site again and am amazed at everything found. Kandie Adkison is responsible for putting a lot of the data out here of dthe Secretary of State's office. Go browse for awhile! Conclusion of invalid pension file. James LINDSAY, neighbor of Webb, states: "that he has been acquainted with Webster C. Webb ever since his boyhood, during which time he has lived a neighbor to him. That at the date of his enlistment he was sound and free from diseases of all kinds and was considered a stout and healthy man. that at the date of his discharge, September, 1865, he came home suffering with an affection of the scalp, having had small-pox while in the service, and was not sound and well at date of his return home; had an ulcerous affection of the scalp and some disease of kidneys. I do not think he has been sound and well since his discharge, and it is my opinion that he has not been able to perform more than one-third manual labor. Dr. John R ROOF, of Brownsville, Ky., states, undesr oath, as follows: That he has given the following medical service and treatment to Webster C WEBB, late second lieutenant of Company G, Seventeenth Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers: Said Webster C Webb came under my treatment and observation some time in the month of September, 1865, at or sometime after his discharge. He was then suffering with albuminuria, caused by small-pox. The scalp was ulcerated, and I continued to treat and prescribe for his disease, occasionally, ever since; but I have no memoranda by which to fix exact dates and duration of all treatment rendered in his case, but know that he has been more or less disabled for the performance of manual labor, on account of said albuminuria and affection of scalp, which has become chronic, ever since his discharge, and I am satisfied from his appearance and physical condiion in genesral that he has been disabled at least one-third of the time from the performance of manual labor. I also knew him before enlistment, and regarded him as being sound and free from said diseases or any predlaposition thereto, and I am not concerned in the claim. Dr. Clairborne J. WATTON, United States examining surgeon at Munfordville, Hart County, Ky., made an official examination of claimant on the 3d day of November, 1876, and states: Gunshot wound right arm; ball entered the middle of the arm, wounding the triceps and biceps muscles. There is pitting at the points of ingress and egress, and he represents that his arm upon hard manual labor becomes useless, and from this cause his disability in one-fourth. He is pitted severely from small-pox, and represents that his knees occasionally swell upon exerting himself physically. He looked debilitated, and is from this condition is one-fourth disabled. Dr. William T. WILKINS, United States examining surgeon at Bowling Green, Ky., also made an official examination of claimant on the 31st day of May, 1882, and states: There are quite a number of large scars over the head, arms, and legs, from which applicant states that in warm weather these scars break open and discharge matter that is very offensive. There is also considerable inflammation of both kidneys. This claim was rejected by the Pension Office on the 7th day of July, 1887, on the ground that the wound was received and the disease contracted prior to enlistment. While it is true that claimant's troubles originated before he was regularly mustered into the United States service, the fact remains that he was enrolled, performed military duty, participated in battle, and was at all times ready to be mustered from September, 1864, to February, 1865, during which time his disabilities occurred. He should not be permitted to suffer from the failure of the mustering officer to discharge his duty. Your committee therefore make this favorable report, and recommend the passage of the bill .... $17 dollars per month. I doubt if anyone on these lists can help, but I am looking for two photographs to go on display at the County Clerk's office in Barren Co. They are trying to locate pictures of all the County Clerks who served here. They are missing two pictures and we've looked everywhere. The missing photos are of Hardin D Ralston (1919-1922 in office) and W W Franklin (served 1886-1892). The latter was also a Civil War soldier. Would there be any chance that you are descended from or have pictures of these gentlemen? First the puzzler; I will reply, it might take me a little longer as I try to rest as much as possible. This is a difficult puzzler and if everyone gets stuck, I will pass on a clue later on in the week. Give it a try by clicking on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's Puzzlers. I found just a snippet of a case involving Keziah SHIELDS of Cumberland County, hoping I can find more. A petition was put before the 24th Congress of the United States in their first session on January 1936. It was entitled "On a Donation of Land to Keziah SHIELDS. The piece I found reads: "That the object of the petition appears to be the procurement of a grant by Congress, of some portion of the public lands to Keziah Shields, the widow of Christian Shields, and to her three infant sons, born at one period of birth, in the lifetime of their father. Mrs. Shields is also the mother of two other and older children, and it is represented by the petitioners to have been left, on the death of her husband, in 1835, in very narrow circumstances. There are the only grounds of the application to Congress ....." I'll try to find the rest as I believe it to have the names of some of the other residents of Cumberland Co asking for her to be given relief. I'll be back later! Due to a nasty bout of strep throat and some sort of a virus, I haven't had the energy to decide on a new series to be covered on our Monday posts for Barren Co. So for today, I am going to quote from the writings of William Daniel Tolle. Tolle wrote under the pen name of "Ellot" for the local papers, his articles ran from the about 1877 to the 1920's. I have always been fascinated by his historical writings of Barren Co and have published his columns under the title of "Backroads of Barren Co". It is like you are riding along with Mr. Tolle, visiting every house and farm and learning all you can about the people and events of which he wrote. This column was written January 7th, 1921 and tells about the "village of Rocky Hill" in Barren Co. It'll be continued a couple of weeks. "Last September I came out of Warren county over a main thoroughfare leading from the Warren and Barren county line, through the village of Grangetown and on to Rocky Hill; and wrote up some of the country through which I passed. When I arrived at Rocky Hill I inquired for the residence of John HUDSON with whom I had anticipated on spending the night and learn much of the history of Rocky Hill and surroundings. I regarded him as one of the oldest there, and have a better acquaintance with him than any other person in the town. But I was disappointed in my imagination. I drove down to his house and was informed by the matron of the house that Mr. HUDSON was not at home nor would not be until late; and she refused me admittance. So I had to go on without the information I had expected. What I have written follows, being an incomplete chapter of Rocky Hill and its surroundings. "The western, or northwestern part of Barren County is very rough and hilly. After leaving the bottom lands of Barren River this broken land sets in and extends several miles in a north or northeast course from the river. The Barren and Warren County line crosses the lower Glasgow and Bowling Green Road, a short distance south of Hydro (a noted place in Warren County) and runs to Barren River, starting at what is known as "COLES Bend." A public thoroughfare crosses the line coming from Warren County to Old Rocky Hill in Barren County, where it branches off in several directions. The writer of this article traveled over this road in the autumn of 1921 from Warren County. He has no certain knowledge of the distance that this road runs from the river but supposes it is one or two miles and running parallel with the river; or as near so as possible with the meandering of both river and road. This country, though rough and broken is fairly well settled. The houses are generally good and up-to-date farm houses. The soil though very rolling is not washed away as in some other portions of the county where the land is more level. It has a red clay sub-soil and is founded on a limestone base. "There is a village on the road between the county line and the village of Rocky Hill by the name of "Grangetown", which was settled by J W HENDERSON, Sr. During the year 1875, then the Patron of Husbandry was at their zenith in Kentucky, a subordinate grange was organized at this place and it took its name from that coincident. A post office is kept at this place and goes by the name of Finney. There are two dry goods and grocery stores, one corn mill, two churches, Baptist and Christian, and one school house. The membership of the Baptist is 160; that of the Christian, 50. There are 70 pupils enrolled in the school. The population of the village is 49. The heads of the families living in the town are: Bymond [sic] SPILLMAN, Chunley GREEN, J W HENDERSON, Ernest YOUNG, George CHRISTY, W R YOUNG, Yancy SMITH, Butler GREEN, Floyd GREEN, Tom GREEN. Some of the citizens living in the vicinity outside of town are: John GRAHAM, O B GREER, F F YOUNG, J J NUCKOLS, Frank MARTIN, D T SPILLMAN, Sam NORRIS, Renick WOOTEN, two inhabitants by the name of Cat. "As the traveler passes on toward Rocky Hill from Grangetown, he sees much of the same kind of country that met his view when he crossed the Warren County line. It extends some distance south of the village of Rocky Hill and several miles north to the Glasgow and Bowling Green Road including a large section which recently has been called the Beckton section. There are several thousand acres in the above-named boundary. The soil or most of it is very productive. It is well adapted to the growth of corn, wheat, oats, and different grasses and fine types of tobacco. Its inhabitants are composed of the best of people. "Although the village of Rocky Hill is the metropolis of this country, it was not the first settled. Captain William EDMUNDS came from Virginia about the year 1810 and bought one thousand acres of land something like four miles north of Rocky Hill. He built a cabin and opened a large farm in the forest. He had a large number of slaves. Mr. EDMUNDS [who Tolle spells EDMONDS] was a leading citizen of his community, having served as magistrate for a number of years. He raised a family of five sons and seven daughters, all of whom are dead." To be continued next Monday. Several of you have written about Betty Jane Gorin-Smith's book on John Hunt Morgan. She isn't my sister, she is a cousin of my daughters but mostly a dear and trusted friend and co-lover of KY history. She was the president of the Jr Historical Society in Taylor Co KY, a former school teacher, is an author and public speaker and really sharp on the Civil War. Message-Id: <200801111229781.SM02220@your-81f40af718.glasgow-ky.com> Her book, Morgan Is Coming, is listed on amazon.com at the following addy: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105-4587946-9081258?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%22Morgan+Is+Coming If the URL doesn't all link, copy and put in the URL line. Now - Amazon doesn't give me a kick back and even Betty Jane won't write me in her will ... there is no monetary gain to me at all. The book is full of photos, maps, battles and names and is the most detailed book I've read on the subject that is a good read as well. You likely can find the book at Barnes & Noble too ... a search for the title will bring the book up.
