    1. [KYBARREN] MAMMOTH CAVE PROGRAM
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Joy Lyons of Mammoth Cave sent me this email and asked if I would pass the information on - which I am pleased to do. Sandi The Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning in partnership with Western Kentucky University Center for Cave and Karst would like to announce an upcoming workshop entitled Mammoth Cave: A Slavery Perspective. This intensive, weekend workshop will be held at Mammoth Cave National Park on February 8, 9, and 10, 2008. The workshop will focus on the rich African American history associated with Mammoth Cave. Guest speakers include: * Dr. Gerald L. Smith, University of Kentucky, * J. Mark Lowe, Certified Genealogist, * Norman Warnell, author and local historian * Joy Medley Lyons, Mammoth Cave National Park Supervisory Park Ranger and award winning author, * Chuck DeCroix, Mammoth Cave National Park Ranger, and * Jerry Bransford, Mammoth Cave National Park Seasonal Ranger and descendant of Mat Bransford. Educators, historians, and anyone else interested in Mammoth Cave’s African American heritage are encouraged to attend. Participants will enter the cave to walk in the footsteps of cave guides Stephen Bishop, Mat and Nick Bransford, and others. They will visit various landmarks in the Park representative of home sites, final resting places, and the beneficial work of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. Statewide resources and genealogy techniques will also be discussed. Due to the active nature of this workshop, all participants must be capable of walking up to three miles on tourist trails in the cave and of hiking on sometimes uneven terrain on the surface. Thanks to Mammoth Cave National Park for providing us with access to the sites and allowing us to conduct this workshop at the park.

    1. [KYBARREN] PUZZLER HINT
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I think google etal must be showing that the answer to my puzzler this week is churches. Very, very, very seldom in KY ... in fact in dozens of church books I've transcribed, you're lucky to hear of a death, let along a marriage or a divorce. I'm looking for a "group" (for lack of a better word) outside of the county where the divorce took place ... who had the power to grant divorces if they weren't granted in the county ... and this group is based in one particular town in KY. Has this helped??? 1. [KYBARREN] BARRREN CO - TOLLE'S HISTORY OF ROCKY HILL
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Now that I'm a little more awake, realized that on Monday's I was giving you the history of the Rocky Hill area by William Daniel Tolle (1877-1920ish). So ... we continue: Henry BOWLES, father of William and Tom BOWLES, live near Dr. REDFORD's on the creek. William EMERSON lived there where his son David EMERSON now lives. Charles LEWIS, an uncle of Gen Joe LEWIS, settled the place where Ben BUTTON now lives. Tom Bill SPILLMAN lives on the old place at Grangetown. Porter LEWIS settled on the place Micajah HOUCHENS now lives. John FANT lives at Port Oliver on the north of the river. C P SPILLMAN, lately deceased, lived on the road leading to the HUDSON fort ... the first place after leaving Rocky Hill. Burkett and Gavin HUFFMAN lived on the old place near Finney. Jefferson HENDERSON, Sr. lived at Grangetown, now Finney Post Office. Mr. HENDERSON was a prominent man, had a large family, was a man of means and business, and a general store and lived until old age carried him off. Gus FANT, father of John and Fielding FANT, lived on Barren River where John HENDERSON now lives. Dick HAWKS lived on the old HAWKS' homestead. W W DUFF, the blacksmith, had a shop on the roadside. Charlie SETTLE, an old man, made his own coffin and put it under the bed so that he would be ready when his time came. He took a notion to have his funeral preached at his house while he was living so he gold old Brother Zachariah EMERSON to preach his funeral on Easter Sunday, April 19, 1829. A big dinner had been prepared by the family and everybody invited. Mr. SETTLE lived several years after his funeral was preached. Mr. MORRIS lived on the Sulphur Well road near Rocky Hill. Dr. BRADFORD lived on Beaver Creek (did he mean Buck Creek?), now the ALCOCK place. Doss DEERING lied across the creek where Jim CARTER now lives. William and Thomas LEAVEL lived on the old LEAVEL homestead, where Mr. SETTLE now lives. Major BRASHEAR was living with them at one time. Ben MARTIN lived near the mouth of Buck Creek where Dr. Joe WOOTEN now lives. Frank MARTIN, his youngest son, lives on a part of the old homestead. The late Jonathan JEWELL Sr better known as Stake JEWELL, lived on Buck Creek, near Rocky Hill. W B JEWELL, his son, owns the old place but lives on the Rocky Hill and Port Oliver Road. Dr Dan RENNICK lives on the river just above the mouth of Buck Creek. Dan and Dr. PORTER and sisters lived thee for a number of years." to be continued next week - hopefully! 2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning .... we're about done with January 2008 and I hope you found more information on some of your family tree! Charles has posted the genealogy puzzler for the week. We had a a great response from last week's puzzler, let's do it again this week. To see the puzzle, click on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's Puzzlers and give it a try. There are several answers that I can accept for this one. Tomorrow - we'll look at another of the old newspapers from the Glasgow Weekly Times from 1897-8 time frame as it has stories from all the counties around Barren Co. Wednesday will be more Metcalfe Co marriages; Thursday will be more Metcalfe Co births and Friday will be a continuation of the Civil War Diary of Simmons. Plus all your queries. Have a great week! 1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - BASHAM MURDER #4
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I'm still catching up and haven't decided on a new series of date for Barren Co, so for today is another portion of the murder trial. "We copy the following related to John BASHAM's capture and personal history from the St. Lawrence County (NY) "Plain Dealer" published at Canton, New York, the place where his capture was effected. In justice to Basham we state that the charge of his having pawned the plate-book, referred to in this article, he declared untrue. His landlord to whom he was indebted seized the plate-book, as he did his other personal effects, and claimed the right to subject them to sale for board indebtedness. The allusion to the affair in the article copied, strongly collaborates Basham's version, and we have no doubt but injustice was done him, unintentionally however. Basham also denies having used Odd Fellowship in securing favor or money. "This is the account, as copied from the St. Lawrence County PLAIN DEALER of a date a few days subsequent to Basham; identification and capture: "ARREST FOR MURDER. On the forenoon of Monday, the people of Canton village were much surprised and somewhat excited by the arrest of a young man who had been in the place for a few weeks on a charge of murder. The facts are as follows: "Some four weeks since the young man decided to appear in our village. He was tolerably well-dressed apparently from twenty two to twenty five years of age. He now gives his age as twenty seven. He gives his name as John S Davis. He was "dead broke" as regards money, and we understand sought aid from the Odd Fellows, as a member of the order. Whether he obtained aid in this manner or not, we are not informed, but he was assisted by individuals at least to the amount of board for a week or so, until he got a place as clerk in the Canton Tea Store. He claimed to have been employed the past season as agent for Chase & Co., Nurserymen, of Geneva, N.Y. and we understand that he had canvassed for them in this vicinity. Before coming here this time he had been two or three weeks at Potsdam, and had pawned his overcoat and canvassing book (a book containing colored plates of fruit, and worth $25) for his board, at the Matteson House. After Mr. QUACKENBUSH of the tea store had taken him into his employ, he redeemed these articles for him, and sent to book by express to Chases & Co. Davis had been negotiating with Chase & Co, and was expecting soon to enter their employ again, ths time as clerk in their Boston office. He had conducted himself since he came here in a gentlemanly manner, was steady, and no suspicion of anything wrong attached to him. "On Friday evening last, Deputy Sheriff TANNER received from Sheriff CHAPIN a letter which he had received from an officer in Louisville, Kentucky, containing a description, and a photograph of one John M Basham, who had committed a murder there and had been a fugitive from justice since March last. They had heard of him in Canada, and elsewhere but had never been able to get any definite clue to his whereabouts until very recently they had detected his handwriting in certain letters received at the post office there. These letters were written from Canton, addressed to some of Basham's friends asking for money and were signed "J. S. D." to be continued next week and if any of you have any knowledge of who this John Basham is from Glasgow in 1877- please post to the list. To date no one has been able to fit him in though there were Bashams here. 1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - BASHAM MURDER PART 3
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. The earlier post from one of the old newspapers outside of Barren Co got a few details wrong I believe. Since this murder happened in Glasgow, I would trust the Glasgow Weekly Times. Continuation of the article where John BASHAM's capture is narrated. This happened in 1877. "The detective walked into the store and bought a few cents worth of candy [note, if you remember Basham is hiding out in Canada], and shortly the Sheriff and Constable came in, and Basham saw they were greatly agitated, acting so as to around his worse suspicion, and after being reinforced by two or three others, they finally ventured to ask him his name. On his giving the name of Davis, one of the officers remarked, you name is BASHAM, then he saw it was up with him and he quietly submitted to arrest. The people in this town were greatly surprised, but were exceedingly kind to him while he remained in jail awaiting the arrival of BLIGH from Louisville. Basham says Bligh knows nothing of his movements after he left here until he was in Canada. It is very evident that his carelessness in correspondence betrayed him, and as soon as his whereabouts were ascertained the detectives were notified and by the aid of his photographs which Bligh had sent to all parts of the country, was readily identified. [It appears that he must have been writing to someone back in Glasgow/Barren County, sg]. "The officers who effected this arrest were in possession of his photograph. Basham has changed very little in appearance, and so far as hair and whiskers are concerned he does not seem to have made any attempt to disguise himself. He looks fresh and rosy and stout, speaks deliberately and with a decided yankeeish tongue, from have associated with no other than those who use their peculiar pronunciation. He complains of the wound made by himself in his attempt at self-destruction, and says at times, it gives him trouble. The bullet is beneath the scalp, and we had no difficulty in detecting its situation with our finger. He has employed some of the best legal talent in the country, and in response to our inquiry as to his expectation for the future in the courts, he spoke rather cheerfully and said he hoped to come out all right. "Jailer KING has furnished him with the most comfortable accommodations consistent with security that he is in possession of, having assigned him to one of the cages alone, and furnished him with comfortable bedding, etc. His wife, with that devotion that only belongs to women's realm, clings to him with inseparable attachment, and visits him frequently with her little boy and Mr. King. "There is only one sentiment among the people of our county, so far as we know, and that is to let the accused have a fair and impartial trial in order that law may prevail and justice be vindicated." To be continued tomorrow - remember, there was a change of venue over to Monroe County for the trial. I loved the expression about the yankeeish accent - since I am a transplanted one! 1. [KYBARREN] BASHAM MURDER - PART 2
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Here is the write-up of the case cited yesterday. "Chief Detective BLIGH, of Louisville arrived in Glasgow on Thursday last, having in custody, John M BASHAM, whose tragical connection in the killing of Mr. A. L. HAWKINS and the subsequent attempt of BASHAM to commit suicide, is familiar to all our readers. The deplorable affair occurred on the 9th of March last, just one year ago today, and its exciting connections will never be forgotten by those at all familiar with the tragic event, and BASHAM's mysterious disappearance. "It will be remembered that BASHAM while in custody of Marshall MURRELL, shot Mr. A L HAWKINS late in the afternoon and after running around the courthouse and reaching the sidewalk of the SHIRLEY House where he resided, he shot himself in the head, and falling, was carried into the hotel. Every attempt by physicians to determine the extent of his injury was thwarted by his persistent refusal to submit to any careful examination and it was only clearly ascertained that a ball had entered the scalp, and whiter gone after the entrance could only be unsatisfactorily conjectured. During the night he managed to escape, and despite earnest efforts to learn his whereabouts not a syllable of reliable news was had as to his escape and the direction he had taken. "We visited the jail Friday with the consent of our Jailor, Mr. John B. KING, first having ascertained BASHAM's willingness to an interview. "We found the prisoner looking remarkably well, considering the fearful anxiety which must have accompanied him since the deplorable and exciting occasion. He received us kindly, and after an interchange of a few commonplace questions and answers, we made inquiry as to his history dating to the hour of his escape, preminsing [sic] our questions with the remark that we did not desire any information which might inculpate his friends or counsel for the defense. In regard to his escape, he is not very definite as to that but stated that after getting quiet for the wound to his head, he slept for some time, and when he left, he supposed it to be late in the night. He gave us no information as to the manner of his escape, or route further than that after a delay of somewhere between a few days and four weeks, he made his way to Canada where he spent the greater part of his time. "He says he had a hard time in Canada, on account he was a stranger, and that it was not possible at times to get any kind of situation on account of the custom of that country requiring certificates of good character from every applicant in all kinds of business. For several weeks, he was compelled to saw wood, simply to supply himself with food. He represents himself as having no money when he escape, and did not have exceeding three hundred dollars when he left the country, and spent the larger part of that working his way to Canada. He was unfortunate in taking sick, and was confined for three or four weeks and not only used up his little money resources, but lost his chance of a profitable situation. By industry and attending directly to business, he gained the confidence of those he had been engaged in business for, and was gradually working his way to lucrative employment when he was detected and captured. He had only been a few weeks in Canton, and was employed by a Tea & Coffee Store, and was greatly liked by his employer who was no little astonished when he found that John was living under an assumed name, that of John DAVIS. to be continued - Snadi SCKY Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=south-central-kentucky Barren Co Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=kybarren Sandi's Puzzlers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/gorin/puz.html

In the 1870 Monroe census, there is an Emeline Bryant, age 14, staying with a Goolsby family in Gum precinct family 49. Family 135 is a Huel P Bryant, age 39, widower, with sons George B, age 6, and Arthur, age 4. George and his wife Eliza Yokley are buried at Lebanon Church Cemetery about 2 miles east of Fountain Run. I might be able to get pictures for you if you would like to have them. I have a little information about Arthur. I ran into him while researching an Eaton family that lived in the Fountain Run area. Please let me know if you find anything. There were a lot of Goodmans from the Fountain Run area, but I don't have anything on an Emeline.
