    1. [KYBARREN] BARREN CO - EARLY SETTLERS OF SKAGGS CREEK CONT.
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Continued from Backroads of Barren Co: Peter and John RITTER died in their boyhood days and were buried on the hill overlooking Skeggs Creek, just below the famous Joe GLOVER mill. Jemima RITTER married a man by the name of REEVES and settled on South Fork Creek some three or four miles from Glasgow. They raised several children; their parents died long ago and the children are still living in the same vicinity where they were born. Susan RITTER married twice; the first time to one by the name of MITCHELL and to them were born two sons: Marcellus, better known perhaps as Brud, and James C. MITCHELL. They have both long since been dead. She married the second time Nehemiah MEADOR near Roseville, Ky. To them were born three daughters: Savillah Jane, Haydie and Amanda, all of whom are still living, but the old people have long since passed to their reward. Elijah RITTER married Easter BELL and to them were born six sons and two daughters: the most of whom are dead. Some of their grandchildren live near the MATTHEWS old Mill. Martha RITTER married Elisha WHITE; who migrated to Missouri long ago; just when I cannot say but they settled in St. Francis County and raised a large family; some of whom are still living there or was a few years ago. David B RITTER Jr was three times married. His first wife was a JOBE; to them was born one son, Henry, who died in early childhood. His second wife was a Miss STRINGFIELD; she lived but a short time after their marriage. His third wife was Mary KINCHELOE, a daughter of George and Amanda KINCHELOE. To them were born four children: Sally A. RITTER, wife of B L SMITH; Fishburn RITTER and Amanda E RITTER, wife of E B KINCHELOE and George K RITTER, all of whom are living at this writing. D B RITTER Jr began life as a tanner when they made leather by the old process at Nobob. From there he moved to the famous RITTER Mill on Skeggs Creek which was known as the HUFFMAN Mill; which he had purchased from his father, D B RITTER Sen. That was in 1856; there he lived and labored until he died in April 1877 from the effects of an accident on the Branch Rail Road leading from Glasgow to Glasgow Junction. NOTE BY SANDI: This would be the RITTER mentioned in the newspaper tidbits recently. Elizabeth RITTER married Wesley CALVERT of the Barren River country near Fountain Run, where she lived and reared a family of five children, two boys, one of whom died just as he came to manhood. The other is still living and is an Ex-Judge of Allen County, Ky. Three girls all of whom are still living and have families and live in the same community in which they were born. Jacob RITTER married Mary HOGAN; to them were both three sons and three daughters. The sons were W H RITTER, J H and J D RITTER. W H RITTER is and has been a mill man; J H RITTER is a stockman and a veterinarian; so also is J D RITTER. The girls are Anthony RITTER [so shown], wife of G H WILBORN of Nobob; Quintella RITTER, wife of John CHAPMAN of Nobob and Alice RITTER who married Georg WILSON. They migrated to Oklahoma where she lived a number of years and died. Pauline RITTER was twice married. The first time to a man by the name of CUNNINGHAM; to them were born two children. She, having been left a widow by the death of her husband, married Sam GILLOCK, a brother of the famous preacher, W G W GILLOCK. To this union was born one son. So times moves on in its course, and with it the generations pass. One has fled and another is dead, and of the third and fourth and fifth some are gone. To be continued next week. His widow Mary is in the 1840 and 1850 Barren County Census records. Thomas died and the suit supposidly mentions his children. I don't have a copy, but I sure would like one. The information I have about the existence of this suit was found in a Hawkins Family file donated to the Rappahannock Historical Society here in Virginia. I have in my research found 12 children for this couple, so evidently 2 had died before the suit was filed. None of the sons I have are named Thomas, but if I find anything out, I'll let you know Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The only meaningful Thomas Green that I have found so far in Barren Co. was in the 1850 Barren Co, census living in the household of John & Elizabeth Brown (my ggg grandparents)dwelling #193 . I suspect that Elizabeth Brown's maiden was Green. There were 2 Thomas Green's in the 1810 census and one Thomas Green in the 1820 Barren co census but I can't connect those with the 1850 Thomas. Additionally, I feel that the 1850 census Thomas Green is the father of Jane Brown, wife of Neri Brown, dwelling #191. Can you help ?? Also, did I understand you correctly that you have the children's names of the 1853 Thomas Green suit??? Another question, where did you find the record of the 1853 Thomas Green suit ??? If we connect, you are welcome to anything that I have. Thanks, Jim Gray Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John N. Walker seems to come up with different birth dates depending on who gave the information on the census. John N. Walker is my gggrandfather. I do have several birth dates from 1839 to 1848 etc. This John married first wife Elizabeth Walker born abt. 1842 Ky. I believe this Elizabeth maiden name was Sara Elizabeth Carter as she is listed as the mother on her daughters death certificate along with her father John Walker. They had 4 children that I know of. William 1869, John T. Walker 1874, Robbert Walker 1878, and AnToy Walker 1880 all of Kentucky with the exception of John which is from Tennessee. They married abt 1868. After AnToy was born, Elizabeth died, unknown cause? John N Walker then went on to marry a Martha Jackson Dec 04, 1886, Glasgow, Barren, Ky per marriage license. After Martha Jackson he then married Nancy T. I just found Elizabeth's maiden name a few days ago. I was looking for a marriage lookup to verify Elizabeth's mai! den name etc. Any additional information would be of great help. Are you related to this side of the family? Thank you for your help. Three men employed about the mill were badly injured." News, Frederick, MD, Wed. January 6, 1892, p. 1: "Raided an Illicit Still. Louisville, Ky., Jan. 6. - J W Reed, a deputy marshall of Glasgow, Ky., brings information of a desperate fight between himself and a gang of illicit distillers who were making moonshine whiskey in a secluded portion of the town. Mr. Reed discovered the still and attempted to take it single handed. The moonshiners, who numbered a half dozen, made a desperate fight, and the marshall found it necessary to use his revolved. Chris Depp, one of the illicit distillers, was perhaps fatally wounded, and several others received injuries. George Martin and several others whose names could not be learned were arrested and are now in the Glasgow jail." 1. [KYBARREN] DANIEL S. SIMMONS CIVIL WAR DIARY CONTINUED
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Continued from last week from "Jacob's People" by the late Kenneth Lee. "We left Corinth to the right, I supposed not over two or three miles. Thursday the 5th we marched through a little village called Danville, the next day through another little village and the next day through Rienzi and camped six miles beyond until Tuesday the 10th. Then we went back to Rienza and took an easterly course and passed through Jacinta, county seat of Tishmingo County the same day. We camped near Irika the 13th and drew money. We marched through town on the 14th on Saturday morning and in the evening we waded Bear Creek and came into Franklin County, Alabama and camped about five miles from the line. We marched through the county seat of Franklin County on the 16th and three miles beyond on the Tennessee River. we crossed the river at Jackson's Landing the 24th and camped by Florence, county seat of Lauderdale County. We marched through Florence the 25th. Friday the 27th, we marched through Rogersville, waded across Elk River and marched into Limestone County. We then marched through Athens, county seat of Limstone County and camped a day or two six miles beyond. We then marched another mile and camped in a nice bluegrass lot where we stayed several days. "Saturday evening July the 5th we marched into Madison County and camped by Huntsville, July the 7th where we stayed two days. We left there on the 9th crossed Hurricane River on a railroad bridge and camped by Brownsboro Depot the 10th. There we caught a lot of fish with our hands. We crossed Rock River and passed through another depot. Next we marched through and camped by Larkinsville July the 11th. Then through Scottsboro and Belford County seat. On the 12th we camped by a town in Jackson County. The 13th we marched within two miles of Stevenson and camped. We marched through Stevenson and Bolliver and arrived at Camp Battlecreek on Monday July 14th. We were stationed a good while in Marion County, Tennessee near Battle Creek on the Tennessee River three miles above Bridgeport. We were close enough to the Rebels to hear their drum beats and bugles blow. The Rebel pickets were on the other side of the river from ours so close that we could understand what the others said by hollowing across the river, but we were not allowed to shoot at each other. Some of our men swam across the river sometimes and would exchange little notions and such as tobacco and paper. We commenced fortifying above the spring at the foot of the mountain near the mouth of Battle Creek the tenth of August. "We left Camp Battle Creek Wednsday evening about dark August the 20th, crossed Battle Creek, marched over some very rough road and reached Jasper which I believe was the county seat of Marion County and camped until the next day. We left there the 21st and marched two miles up the Wilmac Valley (if I mistake not the name) and camped until the next evening. Then we had to counter-march back through Jasper and camped three miles from Camp Battle Creek. Each of these trips was after night and from Camp Battle Creek to Jasper is about nine miles. "On the 23rd we marched about three or four miles and camped until nine or ten o'clock the next day. Sunday the 24th we marched three or four miles when we came to the foot of Cumberland Mountain which was three miles to the top and several miles across. We camped on the mountain Sunday night the 24th in a very rough briary and bushy place. In going into camp our regiment took a wrong road and went a mile before the error was discovered. We were tired and sleepy. During the night a great excitement was raised in camp by some loose mules running through camp which I will not forget soon. Indeed I thought at first the Rebel Calvary had charged upon us as we were frightened out of our sleep." to be continued next week. His father was so wrought up that he became insane, and a sick sister has become so much worse that she may die." Waukesha Journal, Waukesha, Wisconsin, Saturday, August 9, 1890, p. 7: "At Palmer's store near Glassgow, Ky., William Martin shot and killed John Bucks. Martin surrendered." Note; could this be Burks instead of Bucks? Sandusky Daily Register, Sandusky OH, Wednesday, 2 Apr 1890, p. 1. "Loss of Life at other Points. Louisville, Ky., April 1. - A special from Glasgow, Ky., says: "The news which arrived from the lower part of this and Allen counties is that the tornado of Thursday night did immense damage in that section. For ten miles beyond Barren river and five miles on this side, a total of fifteen miles, the storm swept everything before it, its track extending in width from 500 yards in some places to half a mile in others. It seems to have hugged the ground more closely and did not leave a house or tree standing in its course. So far as can be learned here now, Andrew Winn's house, in Allen county, was leveled to the ground and his wife killed; Geo Carver's house was wrecked and his wife killed; Samuel White, his wife and son were crippled. White had a fruit farm containing fifty acres and a large number of bee hives and every tree was blown down and every hive carried away. Joe Bush's home, in Barren county, was just on the edge of the tornado and was unroofed, while Alonzo Whitney's house, near by, was completely demolished, as was also Wm Button's. Seventeen lives in all are said to have been lost in Allen county, but there [sic] names cannot be learned except as above given." What a repeat of history; it was this area that was hit earlier this month with 4 deaths in Allen Co. 3. Any chance that the Parrishs could have evolved into Farris? My wife's family had always been told that they were originally from Barren County then moved to Louisville, KY. I can only trace them to Shepherdsville, Bullitt Co. Ky. William Curtis Farris b. 8/1830 in KY and lived in Bullitt Co. in 1880. His parents were an Unknown Farris and a Milly Unknown. He had three known siblings: Margaret b. about 1822, Sarah b. about 1834 and Stanton Farris b. 1848. This becomes my dead end! Any help.. With thanks Paul M., Louisville
