    1. Re: [KYBARREN] I LOVE THESE - TIDBITS FROM THE PAST
    2. I too would like to thank you for these postings. Beside the interesting reading, they give us a more personal view of those who came before. I think they also show that although some, not all, of the problems of the time were different we are still human with human faults. And to say "things like that never happened in past times" is very wrong, they did. Thank you again for real stories about real people. Char ----- Original Message ----- From: "M. 1. [KYBARREN] TIDBITS FROM THE PAST FROM OTHER PAPERS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Contributed by Shawn - with thanks. Sandi The Atlanta Constitution June 2, 1910 He Slashed Throat While in Hospital Birmingham, Ala, June 1 -- Lucian Carden a conductor on the Louisville and Nashville railroad who has been in a local hospital for three weeks attempted suicide this morning by slashing his throat with a razor. When a telegram announcing that he had been injured was handed to his mother, Mrs. Malissa Carden, in Glasgow, Ky., she dropped dead. Carden had both legs cut off about three months ago and attracted attention by smoking a cigar while he watched the men pick up his legs. He smoked all the way to the hospital. ==================== NOTE: I have posted this many years ago but for the new people on the list, it deserves a repeat. Tomorrow I will post the 'Rest of the Story". Sandi Portsmouth (NH) Herald Feb. 3, 1911 Mourners Get a Scare Aged Woman Comes to life as She is About to be Buried Glasgow, Ky., Feb. -- Mrs. Jane Pitcock, 80 years old, caused a commotion in the mountain hamlet of Gamaliel by coming to life in her coffin at the funeral in the church. The lid of the coffin had been removed to give the mourners a last look as the supposed dead. Then the aged woman opened her eyes and stretched forth her hands in silent supplication to those around her. Some ran out of the church in terror, while others fell on their knees beside the coffin and prayed. The woman remained conscious several hours, murmuring of wonderful visions, then she again sank into unconsciousness which this time actually ended in death. ======================== The Washington (D.C.) Post Sept. 12, 19112 Cornfed Squirrels on Toast Glasgow (Ky.) Dispatch to Louisville Courier-Journal "Squirrel on toast" is the menu being enjoyed by people in this section who are willing to arise early and make a trip to some nearby woodland. For the first time in a dozen years the residents of Barren, Cumberland, Metcalfe and Monroe counties are enjoying squirrel in abundance; and, by the way, this settles the question of squirrels migrating. A few weeks ago it was next to impossible to find a squirrel in either of the counties mentioned, and now they are so plentiful that an amateur can kill several in a short time. The woods seem alive with them. At early morning and at late evening they can be seen perched on cornstalks, taking a meal at the expense of the farmer or running along the fence on their way to and from the cornfield. As many as 40 squirrels have been bagged by one person in Metcalfe county within the last week, and a report of 12 to 25 is not uncommon. Many people who have cornfields near the woodlands have to make trips around them night and morning to keep the squirrels scared off. 3. Note: For some reason, posting is slowed to a crawl on the lists at time. I normally make my posts between 7-8 every morning and sometimes the posts don't show up until late afternoon or early evening. I'm not sure why but I try to check and be sure they are eventully getting to you! Sandi The Daily Advocate Victoria, Texas Aug. 26, 1910 Outbreak of Scabies Glasgow, Ky., Aug. 24 -- It was learned here today that the sheep in Barren and adjoining counties are afflicted with scabies, and not only a small portion, but over 50 per cent are afflicted with the disease. The matter was telegraphed to Commissioner of Agriculture M.C. Rankin, who at onece appointed Dr. E.C. Reaves, of Glasgow, Livestock Inspector for Barren County, and other inspectors are to be appointed in the various counties where the disease is spreading. On September 1 a quarantine will be placed on all the sheep in this county and everything will be done to stamp out the disease, which is not only destroying the flocks, but is claimed to be responsible for the shortage of wool during the past year. ======================== Fort Wayne (INdiana) Journal-Gazette Dec. 27, 1910 Children Locked in Home and Three Burn to Death Glasgow, Ky., -- Dec. 26 -- On returning home from an errand late this afternoon, Mrs. Robert Boles, of Wisdom, in this county, was horrified to find her home in ashes and in one corner of the ruins, the charred bones of her three children aged five, three and one years. How the fire started is a mystery. When Mrs. Boles left home she carefully covered the fire, taking every possible precaution to prevent the children from getting into mischief and locked the doors. It was evident that the children had tried to escape, but were trapped and died in each other's arms. ================================= SCKY Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=south-central-kentucky Barren Co Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=kybarren Sandi's Puzzlers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/gorin/puz.html

    3. Waterloo Semi Weekly Courier Aug. 17, 1906 Ominous News From Kentucky Thousands of the so-called seventeen year locusts are coming up from the ground and literally overrunning the land about Glasgow, Ky. Their wings bear figures like unto the letters "W. W." says a Glasgow correspondent of the Cincinnati Enquirer. By the superstitious, this is regarded as an omen of "want and war." It is further asserted that on the last appearance of the locusts in 1889, their wings bore the letters "P.P.," betokening "peace and prosperity." ============================= Cambridge City (Indiana) Tribune Nov. 5, 1903 Hall of Fame "R.T. Daniel, who owns many blocks in Spokane, Wash., most of the town of Trail, in British Columbia, and 10,000 acres of land in Cuba, left Glasgow, Ky. twenty-five years ago with just $1 in his pocket." ========================== The Newark (Ohio) Advocate Oct. 31, 1907 Constant Rain on a Spot Kentucky Interested in Shower Only Covering Twenty-five Square Feet The residents of Glasgow, Ky., have been interested during the past few weeks by the strange phenomenon of a fine mist of rain which has been falling in a space of about twenty-five feet square. Since the report was first circulated the scene has been visited by several hundred people, says a Glasgow special dispatch to the New York Times. The space where the is is falling includes the spot where Bill Bartly was slain last May by his brother in law, Van Smith, and since it was first discovered there has been no interruption day or night. Among those who have visited the place during the past few days were State Senator J.C. Gillingwater [sic - Gillenwater] and J.A. Conyers, connected with the United State's Marshal's Office at Louisville. Both men walked slowly through the mist and said that their coats and hats plainly showed the effects of the water. =================== SCKY Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=south-central-kentucky Barren Co Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=kybarren Sandi's Puzzlers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/gorin/puz.html

    3. 3 Jan 1898 articles continued: Henry WILLIAMS of Bowling Green - worthy young Democrat elected Enrolling Clerk of the KY House on the 8th ballot. V R SHELTON of Metcalfe Co elected Sgt-at-arms of the Senate; Walter FLIPPIN of Monroe Co elected Doorkeeper of the House; R E McCANDLESS of Metcalfe Co elected Assistant Cloak-room Keeper and Eugene PAGE of Edmonton - no position shown. Thomas P DICKINSON became a partner in TRIGG's Bank on the first of the month. Everybody in Barren Co knows him; his business life has been banking; has no superior as a bank officer. His friends congratulate him. The attention of the authorities is called to the condition of the gutters around the court-house yard, which, we understand, are to be allowed to remain as they are. By all means something should be done to prevent the water standing in these gutters, as they are not only unsightly, but unhealthy as well. When the work not being done on the court-house yard is completed it will be all the more noticeable. Glasgow ought to have enough pride to see that this nuisance is removed. Bruce DOHONEY, the only son of Judge R B DOHONEY died at his father's residence on Beaver Creek, five miles from town Tuesday morning between 8 and 9 o'clock. At about 8, his mother heard him coughing, but on going to his room a short time afterwards she found him dead; she was the only other person at the house when he died. His death was sudden but not unexpected; he had been suffering several years with hypertrophy of the heart; 31 years of age; a young man of splendid attainments, solid worth and tried honor. He will be greatly missed by his associates in business and social circles. Burial took place yesterday at 3 pm in the family burying ground at Edmonton. Below are a few more newspaper tidbits which might be of interest, provided by Shawn of our list. See you tomorrow! Sandi Colorado Springs Gazette Apr. 13, 1901 Killed by Robbers Wichita, Kan. Apr 13 -- A dispatch received here late tonight from El Reno, O.T., says that four men have been arrested for the murder of T.H. Pemberton near Weatherford last night, and tha a lynching is expected before morning as the citizens are wildly excited. Earlier in the night a report came to El Reno that the lynching had taken place, but it has since been denied. The remains of Mr. Pemberton arrived tonight at El Reno and will be shipped to Glasgow, Ky. in the morning. The real names of the men arrested are not known. The purpose of the murder was robbery. Weatherford, O.T. Apr 13 -- Thomas H. Pemberton, age 65 years, was killed at midnight last night and tonight six suspects were arrested and will be held for investigation. Their names are E.J. Welch, Thomas McCormick, Charles Reed, Charles Chapman, J.A. Welch and J.S. Sawyer. While at his brother's home, Charlie remarked that a photo of his brother's family was not good. Eugene and his wife both became angry at the remark. Last night Eugene went to Charlie's home and calling him out, split his head open with an axe and then fled. ========================== Marysville (Ohio) Tribune JUl. 31, 1905 Deed of a Woman Glasgow, Ky. Jul 31 -- Mrs. Jennie Shaw committed suicide at her home, near Summershade, by hanging herself. About three months ago her husband, it is alleged, deserted her.
