Galveston Daily News, Galveston TX, Saturday, 24 Dec 1887, p. 2. "Met with Firmness. A Mob Marches to a Jail but Marches Away Again. Louisville, Ky., December 23. - A special to the Courier-Journal from Glasgow, Ky. A mob of something less than one hundred men marched into Tompkinsville Wednesday night, and marched out again - that was all. They came desperately determined and thirsting for the gore of five burglars and firebugs now behind the bars of the county jail, but they found outside and in an armed guard every bit as determined as they were, and indeed a little more so. Turner NELSON and William GLAZEBROOK and other sufferers and losers by the robbery and fire boldly confronted the mob and appealed to the excited men to let the la take its course with the prisoners, at the same time telling them emphatically that any attempt to do violence to them would be met with force from the guards, and that there would be more men killed outside than in the jail. The appeal or threat, or the two influences combined, had the desired effect, and the mob quietly dispersed and went its way. "Citizens of Tompkinsville have declared their determination to protect the robbers from lynching, and they will keep their word. Their conduct is highly commended in the face of the fact that many of them have been utterly ruined by these men and their little town crippled and almost paralyzed and their little town crippled almost beyond recovery. That cool temper should prevail under these circumstances is unusual and remarkable. The robbers declared they had no intention of burning the town or even the store house they robbed." Wisconsin State Journal, Madison WI, Friday, 17 Nov 1899, p. 6. "Had His Gift Kept Secret. How the Late Cornelius Vanderbilt Aided a Struggling Kentucky Church. The recent death of Cornelius Vanderbilt has brought to light a hitherto unknown act of generosity on the part of the late millionaire, by which he enabled the members of a small Methodist church about four miles from Glasgow, Ky., to complete a new house of worship, which they had for some time been struggling to build. This was nearly a quarter of a century ago. "Funds for the erection of the church were being raised by Rev. R. W. Browder, the pastor. He had secured pledges for almost enough money to complete the church, but found that he could raise no more among his people, who had given all they could to afford to. The sum of $50 was needed to complete the building. "After many efforts to raise the sum Mr. Browder finally determined to write to Cornelius Vanderbilt and lay the church's troubles before him. The minister soon received a letter from Mr. Vanderbilt, inclosing his check for $50, with the request that no mention be made of the giver's name." Does anyone know which church this was? Herald-Despatch [this was the way the paper spelled it's name], Decatur, IL, Saturday, 20 Oct 1897, p. 1. "Disappointment in love caused Thos A SMITH to commit suicide near Latham, IL, by shooting himself with a target rifle. He was 26 and formerly of Glasgow, Ky." Daily Republican, Decatur, IL, Tuesday, 16 Oct 1897, p. 3. "Used a Target Gun. Thomas A SMITH, employed on W H KRETZINGER's farm near Latham, in Logan county, committed suicide Sunday night by shooting himself in the head with a target gun, 22 calibre. The coroner's jury consisted of Messrs. W F HENN, N W HOWE, James W HOWE, R A MARKLAND and James LEWELLEN. They decided that the deceased "came to his death from a gunshot wound at his own hands with suicidal intent." SMITH was 26 years old, and his parents reside at Glasgow, Ky. A love affair is said to be the cause of the rash act." (Does anyone know who his parents were? This is close to my old stomping ground and just curious, Sandi) Dubuque Daily Herald, Dubuque IA, Thursday, 16 Nov 1899, p. 4."Short Telegrams" Glasgow, KY., Nov 15. - Near Old City today George DOVE, a half breed Indian, found his wife and Albert JAMES together. Continuation of the Tolle history published in Backroads of Barren Co. Written in 1921 for this portion. "I said that D B RITTER, Sr. lived at various places in Barren county. At one time he lived at the village of Nobob, then he purchased the land on which Mr. J R TRAVIS now lives. He made, or had made, the brick that the house was built of that Mr TRAVIS now lives ins. Over the door is a brick with D B R 1824 on it, and in another part of the house is another brick with the impress of a large dog's foot, so we can see in four more years a century will have passed and one of the landmarks is still here. He also lived for a short time in the present city of Glasgow, then a mere village, but just what years - I do not know. He lived at one time at the RITTER old mill, known far and wide, under the management of D B RITTER Jr. He finally moved to Buck Creek where after the death of his second wife he married a lady by the name of BENEDICT. There they lived for a number of years; he finally dying in the year 1865. He and the mother of his eleven children lie buried on the A B NUCKOLS farm, which has been owned for several years by Samuel HARLAN but which was sold by him recently to a company of men in Glasgow. Signed G K RITTER. "The next farm below the RITTER Mill formerly belonged to Rev. Andrew NUCKOLS who in his latter days preached the two seed doctrine. He was in former years a colleague of Ralph PETTY of the Blue Spring Creek country and who preached together. This farm is on the south side of the creek and I have been told was recently sold for $30,000. I don't know who the buyer was, but Samuel HARLAN had owned it for a number of years and I suppose sold it. "A farm a short distance below the RITTER Mill on the north side of the creek, was the residence of an old settler by the name of William WELLS. He had a large shoulder and in order to distinguish him from another William WELLS, was designated "Big Shoulder" William WELLS. He was the father of Clifton, James, Bird, and Braxton WELLS; all dead at this writing. Clifton was at one time engaged in business at Roseville; Bird served as Justice of the Peace in this district for one or more terms. He also spent a time in California in the gold mines. I think his brother James did also. "In the early settling of the country, Lawrence GILLOCK, a Revolutionary War soldier came to Barren County and took up, or got in possession of, a large body of land otherwise, south of the creek, which extended from the well known as the Charlie RAY farm on the road leading from Glasgow to Roseville to the farm formerly owned by Andrew NUCKOLS, just below the RITTER Mill. The land extended far towards Roseville; and included the old Johnny ADAMS place on the right of the road beyond the RAY farm. Mr. GILLOCK was said to be one of seven brothers, all of whom was in the Revolutionary War. He raised a family of four children; three girls and one boy. One of his girls married Charly RAY; one married John ADAMS and one a BAKER. Of the BAKER woman, I have no knowledge of any descendants. William, one son married and raised a family of children who lived and died in the vicinity of Roseville; James, George, Simeon and Albert were sons of William, he also raised several daughters. James never married. "Rev. W G W GILLOCK as a son of William GILLOCK, and a noted Baptist preacher. He probably was instrumental in the conversion of many persons as any person in the county; and the building up of the Baptist church, in his day and time. He was twice married and raised a family of four or five children; one girl and three or four boys, all of whom are dead except one son, William, of Glasgow. William was a valiant soldier of the Orphan Brigade in the Confederate Army during the Civil War of 18681-1865. At this writing, 1921, he is living in Glasgow, KY and looking after the interest of some lumber firm. He is aging considerably and the ravages of time show heavily upon his features. Since the above was written I have ascertained that William GILLOCK Sr above mentioned, raised one son named Lawrence, who was next to the oldest son. Another boy by the name of Robert. Two of his daughters married; one married a DEVINE and one married Bedford LOWERY, who was the father of Melvin and Lawrence LOWERY, two highly respected citizens of the Roseville country." to be continued next week.
