Carpenter born 6 Dec 1833 in Kentucky is my 3rd great grandfather. He and his sister Amanda J were living with an Andrew Carpenter and his wife Elizabeth and their children Mary, William, Elizabeth, Nancy, and George Ann in the 1850 Barren County census. I was told that James was a first cousin to Andrew and that they descended from the Zimmermans that settled in Virginia in 1717. There is a John Carpenter that came later with his Brother William Carpenter in the early 1720's that they may also be descended from. Can anyone help me sort this out? I just finally finished the series on the KY Court of Appeals books ... they have been very interesting! Volume 3 covers all the sessions from April 1884 through the end of 1899 where I'm stopping for now. There are 181 cases in this book and covers the same counties as previously shown. Some of the cases include railroad deaths, murders, forgery, counterfeiting, insurance companies, fires, laws of descents, etc plus the normal day-by-day appeals over land. The railroad cases are increasing year by year; there were many deaths of not only animals but people who were fascinated with the iron horse and sometimes found out how dangerous it could be. So many times, the deceased's executor would sue the railroad and win; the RR would appeal - and win in a majority of the cases! There is a dandy case from Barren Co resulting from the burning of the barn of L W Preston of Race Street where all of his horses and stock were killed and bloodhounds were called in - into some interesting areas! There is a case of a doctor performing an illegal operation, fights over cabs at the Glasgow Depot, a competing newspaper to the Glasgow Times, a fight at a church function that resulted in a murderand a poor soul who after 8 arrests for selling apple brandy, broke his promise and got picked up for the 8th time ... and much more. Although these cases are relatively short as the Court of Appeals renders its decision, there is a lot of good details in them. Lots of attorneys showed up for the L&N cases - there could be big money if they won their case! As usual, if you would like to see the index and the table of contents, write me privately and I'll send them to you as a Word document - likely tomorrow. I've typed a lot today! While I was looking up all the information on Andrew Jackson and Mary Belle Moran Parrish, we have a lot of questions answered. Here is what I can offer. Parks Parrish b. Mar 3 1772, Goochland, VA, d. Sep 19, 1830, Barren, KY, m. Elizabeth Tisdale, b. Mar 11 1774, Louisa, VA, d. Jul 17 1830, Barren, KY. They married Dec 28 1792 in Louisa County, VA. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and he and his wife were buried in the Parrish Burying Ground in Goodnight, Barren, KY. Parks and Louisa had 12 children. My great-grandmother was their 11th child, Judith T Parrish. Their 4th child was William Woodson Parrish, b. Jul 11, 1796 in Louisa County, VA, d. Apr 2 1872 in the Goodnight community of Barren, Kentucky. William Woodson married Louisa Willis, b. Feb 4, 1813 in Green County, KY, and died Aug 22, 1882 in Goodnight, Barren, KY. I have pictures of their headstones. On the 1840 US Census, the John Walton family is listed 4 names below the Wm. W. Parrish family. William Woodson and Louisa Willis Parrish had 11 children. Andrew Jackson is the son of William Woodson and Louisa Parrish, their 5th child, b. Jan 20, 1841 in Barren, KY. He died Aug 29, 1903 in Barren, KY and is buried in the Hiseville Cemetery, Barren, KY. He married Mary Belle Moran, b. Dec 21, 1846, Barren, KY. Thanks everyone for the great information and connection to the families in California. I has lost the trail on this family, so now we can pick it up again. I can provide detailed information on William Woodson Parrish decendents. Please feel free to contact me and I would love to share the pictures that have been shared with me. Thankfully, our snows of last week are gone and spring seems like it might be on its way ... maybe. Charles has posted the genealogical puzzler for the week. Click on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's Puzzlers and give it a try. Thanks to all the guessers of last week! I have almost finished the 3rd and last of the series on the KY Court of Appeals; I am indexing it now - lots of yummy and interesting cases going up to 1900. There are many murders, train accidents, illegal sales of alcohol, etc. I'm also preparing for a presentation for the KY Historical Society and KY Genealogical Society in Frankfort on Saturday, Apr 12th ...keeping busy! Continuing from the writings of "Ellot" - William Daniel Tolle. "On the south side of the creek below the old Johnny ADAMS homestead lived for many years Matthew PETTY, a capitalist. He did not settle the place; I don't know who the first settler was. Below him lived Price MORAN. On the north side of the creek below the Ray ford was a large body of land occupied by Robert STRANGE. It belonged to his wife. They had a good many Negroes before the Civil War and the land was farmed pretty extensively. Mrs. STRANGE belonged to a noted family by the name of PAGE. She had no children but raised a niece, whose descendants inherited her estate in after years; mention of which will be made hereafter. "On the south side of the creek further down, James GILLOCK settled on a tract of land thought to be about 1000 acres. He was a Revolutionary War soldier and a brother of Laurence above spoken of. He married Miss HUNT. Born to this marriage two daughters and five sons. The eldest, Melcijah married Julian PAGE December 19, 1827; Albert married Ann BARBER April 25, 1839; 2nd marriage to widow Marian WILLIAMS March 2, 1857; Milton G to Martha Ann BUSH November 27, 1833; Robert H GILLOCK to Louisa SETTLE; Hezekiah to Elizabeth DODD March 10, 1846; Kitty GILLOCK, the eldest daughter married George ELLIS. Harriet married Anderson WOOTEN, they were the parents of our townsman J T Y WOOTEN. "Melchijah [spelled various ways] died in a few years after his marriage, leaving two children; one son, William and one daughter, America. Their mother remarried John BARLOW of the Boyds Creek country and was the mother of Frank and John BARLOW of Barren County and Ann BARLOW who married John B SNODDY, now of Texas. The mother came to her death by hanging in an upper chamber of her house. Her daughter America was reared by her aunt, Elizabeth STRANGE, wife of Robert STRANGE. "The son William died in early manhood. The daughter America married Haden RALSTON and was the mother of the RALSTON brothers of Glasgow, KY. The landed estate of Mrs. STRANGE was not finally disposed of for many years after her death. It contained a great deal of very valuable timber, the sale of which, and afterwards, the land, which amounted to several hundred acres, reached many thousands of dollars. The RALSTON brothers were the legal heirs and inherited this large estate. A portion of this land if not all of it, belongs to Fannin JOHNSON. "Further down the creek below the GILLOCK homestead, Snead KINSLOW owned a fine farm in the long ago. The last I knew of this farm, it was owned by Fannin JOHNSON. Below this place lived Louis WILKINSON, Tom RENFRO, Elijah KINCHELOE, Lafayette WINN, James BACON, C T ELLIS, A Y ELLIS, Sen., B G WELLS, George MATTHEWS. In this neighborhood, in the long ago, Allen MATTHEWS ran a flouring grist and saw mill for many years. It was regarded as one of the best mills of the country at the time in which it was operated. "Others living and have lived in this section: A Y ELLIS, Jr., T W SETTLE, B W MYERS, W J ELLIS, Thomas RALSTON, H D RALSTON, W J LEAVELL, Robert RALSTON, Jose SETTLE, B C RENFRO. "Below the Pike: James FRAZIER, D RALSTON, Dr. J G ADAMS, Jewell BERRY, Mrs Mattie CASH, J A BRITT, Tom HERSTON, Jas BUTTON and Mrs. S. WOODSON." To be continued next week. I was just writing to ask about the "Moran", and you answered! It is wonderful how many records are available online in Calif - and the quality of the information. I would love an emailed copy of the photo including Belle Moran. One of my KY Moran family, an older widow, moved to Calif in early 1900s and died out there in 1930s; a old spinster cousin from KY lived with her and died about the same time - I have them on the 1930 census and think it was Santa Clara. Some time ago I asked for their death certs, but the State wanted a long notarized application and big fee, so I didn't get them; now I can probably see them on-line! I don't see your email address, but mine is mafarr28@peoplepc.com. Many thanks for your trouble in sending the photo! Crumpton, born 4 January 1871 in Kentucky, died Riverside county 30 June 1960, Age 89, mother's maiden name Moran. This would be Nettie Ozella Parrish who married Riley Buford Walton, according to the earlier posting by Charles W. Walton. The census shows Nettie as married to "K. Crumpton" in the 1910 census of Barren county, Kentucky and the 1920 census of Kings county, California. He is listed in the California Death Index (1905-1929): K. Crumpton, wife's initials N.O., died Kings county on 24 December 1924, Age 58, Certificate #55044. They are shown together in the census with 5 Crumpton children. All 5 are listed in the California Death Index (1940-2000): 1 - Bruce Parrish Crumpton, mother's maiden name Parrish, born 12 December 1901 in Kentucky, died Alameda county 17 August 1999, Age 97, Soc. W., died Kings county 29 November 1917, Age 81, Certificate #37011 (From other sources, this is Virgin Mary Bradshaw, married Lemuel in 1856). Lemuel W. Crumpton, spouse V. M., died Kings county 30 September 1923, Age 91, Certificate #38744 Cal. C. Crumpton, died Kings county 17 July 1929, Age 12 hours, Certificate #36472 I believe K. Crumpton was probably the son of Lemuel and Virgin, listed as Cavel in the 1870 census, Cabell in the 1880 census, and again as Cavel (born Nov. 1866) in the 1900 census.
