    1. [KYBARREN] UPDATE FOR FRIDAY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I won't over-load the list with updates on Mom, but wanted to say thank you for everyone who has written me privately. I'm not answering e-mails right now, you understand, but wanted to let you know I am reading each one and it is so encouraging. I just got back from the hospital; missed the doctor, as usual. We have strong storms coming in so I wanted to get there and back quickly. The staff moved Mom up to a room right next to the nurses' station so they could hear her; the same crew is on duty today thankfully and they are very compassionate. The sad news is that there is no change, or maybe a little for the worse. Mom is totally blind, cannot talk and cannot swallow on her own. She did not respond to me at all this morning as she did yesterday with a nod of the head, but I think she is aware I'm there. I held her hand and when I removed it, she tried to reach for it. But, I can only be there for a short time as she becomes very agitated and trembles badly; I know she wants to talk to me but can't. They are keeping her on an IV with antibiotics and Heparin only; no pain meds until the doctor studies her case. I will call there in a couple of hours after the doctor has hopefully made his/her appearance. I'm not sure what they will do; if she will be allowed to stay there for any length of time - back to the nursing home (no!) or what. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. 3. Sandi, you take care of your mother, and don't forget to take care of yourself. We will muddle through. Keep us posted on how she is doing whenever you can. 1. [KYBARREN] OFF-LINE FOR AWHILE
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I want to let you know that I'll possibly be off-line for a while. My Mom was taken to the hospital this morning and I've been there since making my morning post. She has pneumonia and even though the CAT scan does not show it, they believe she has had a stroke. She can move but is 99% unresponsive. She'll open one eye only but sees nothing; she looks around and falls back into a light slumber. She has tried to talk a little, but nothing comes out but sounds. When I left for a quick break, I yelled into her ear (she is hard of hearing) where she was and what they were going to do and asked if she understood. There was a slight nodding of the head. At first they said they were going to start her on antibiotics and send her back to the nursing home, but then the ER doctor flagged me down and said he had changed his mind. They are checking with her primary care physician and keeping her at the hospital for a day or two. The doctor said an older person (she'll be 96 next month) can react the way Mom is - vision, hearing and unresponsiveness, when they get pneumonia. But, strokes can show up a couple of days later and if she can't feed herself or be fed, a feeding tube possibly but not much else they can do. So, I'll be home hit and miss, the hospital is only about 5 blocks from me and I'll likely make some posts occasionally barring any worsening. It helps my sanity. But, I won't particularly be answering any emails past this afternoon - I'm waiting for the hospital to call now to see the decision from her primary care physician and her room number. I'd appreciate your prayer for Mom - Gwen Laughery - and for wisdom to do the right thing. Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php

Ray and his wife Bea have lost their precious daughter Linda very recently and I would like to offer my condolences and prayers for the family. Ray has been not only a friend to the list and researchers of this area, but to me personally over the years and is one of whom I call one of the " good guys". 1. [KYBARREN] DID THEY SIGN WITH AN "X"
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. A tip I just read .... Sandi Remember that just because your ancestor signs their "mark" on a document it doesn't mean they were illiterate. In some cases, a person might have been told to "make their mark" which was unique to them, and as long as it was witnessed, legally binding. Remember also that if your ancestor was ill and on their death bed when they signed their will, making their mark might have been all they could do.
