One of the primary sources we might have for the death date of our ancestors is their tombstone. When the newspapers don't exist for that time frame, when there were no death certificates (begun in 1911 in KY), when the funeral home is either out of existence or their records "way back" don't exist, and when no family members still live who were there ... it's the tombstone IF we can find the cemetery. But, who put the information on the tombstone? Who gave the information to the engraver or who carved the information in with a pocket knife? It came from someone who, at the time, thought they knew the date of birth and the date of death. Did you ever stop to think that the stone might have been put up years later by a family member who took the dates from memory or oral tradition? A conflict can also come from differing dates shown in the records. In copying many stones over the years with Martha Harrison, we have found that one date of death was shown in a newspaper obituary, another from the funeral home and yet another from the stone! In an instance like this, I would likely opt for the funeral home record as most of them recorded the event right after it happened and their records are either held in old ledgers, one date after another, or alphabetically. But, these can be in error on the date and place of birth; they can only record the information given them by the "informant" who might give them the wrong information. I remember when my father died that I was so distraught that I gave them my Dad's wrong date of birth and had to go back and correct it. But, even if there is a discrepancy, if you find the tombstone, copy it exactly dates and all. Add any extra information - many in the past had verses of Scripture, poems, decorations, organizations they belonged to, etc. Don't add to what's there or leave anything off. You can then note in your records that this date(s) conflict with other sources. Give as much of a detailed location as you can as to its location so others might be able to locate the stone later if it still stands. Last night, at our historical society meeting, our speaker was Major Bobby Travis (ret.) who told us about the Barren County-Glasgow Veterans Wall of Honor. He, along with other citizens, had a desire to establish a wall in Glasgow honoring our soldiers from all wars. The wall is located on the square in the Beulah Nunn Park at Race and Washington Street and is beautiful. They currently have a little over 1,100 plaques on the wall and are attempting to have 1,500 by Veteran's Day. They know there are thousands more soldiers that could be represented on the wall Park City, Hiseville and I believe one more town in the county, have similar walls. The soldier's represented can be living as well as deceased from other wars; there are two Medal of Honor plaques. This includes all branches of service including Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, Merchant Marines, Army Air Corps, Army Air Force, etc. The plaque shows only the name and branch of service. Rank, decorations, years of service, theaters of service or other information may be used for future honors by the Barren County Veteran's Association. The cost for a plaque is $40.00. Applications are available locally at the Cultural Center, Chamber of Commerce and other locations throughout town. If anyone would be interested from this list, e-mail me and I'll find an address where you can write for an application. The main requirement is that the soldier lived in Barren County (at any time, could have moved from here), or died here or was a resident when in service. The application asks for the name to be placed on the plaque, branch of service, proof of service, name of person submitting application with address and phone number. Documentation would include a copy of an honorable discharge or, for older wars, a citation from newspaper, muster roll, any sort of military record. In the fall issue of "Traces", the official organ of the South Central KY Historical & Genealogical Society, I will be doing a feature story on the wall. If you have any questions, write me and I'll attempt to get the information for you. I receive no money from this ... as most of you know, I am an ardent supporter of our military and wanted to help get the word out only. With the advent of various on-line family trees, our "work" as genealogists has been made a lot easier ..... and a lot more confusing. As you have learned, I am sure, if someone enters information on a family tree that is in error, hundreds of other people take this as the Gospel truth, copy it and post it on their family tree. And, it is difficult to get the error corrected!!! Some services, such as ancestry.com and others do allow for little electronic "post it notes" which can flag the error; however, that will not be seen by everyone. They might not find the family tree with the error flagged, but all those who have copied from the incorrect source. But, it may be worth your time to go through all those trees. Time consuming yes and you'll likely find total repeats on many of the lines in error. However, one of these submitters could have stumbled upon something that the others didn't and give a source to prove it. I have found, in my own research, that I am listed on one site as being married 5 times to the same man with different dates, locations or variations of spellings. The submitter conveniently threw in a few death dates for my late husband, but suddenly he was brought back to life and I married him again later! Interesting! Sometimes people don't check very closely what they are entering. But, at the same time, I have found 20 or so incorrect trees on an ancestor and bingo, found one that gave me new information that proved to be accurate and helped me in my research. So - don't accept everything you find online as being correct. We're all human and make mistakes, some more gross than others! Take the time to check them out and you might find something you really need that will open up another whole area of searching for you! Good morning - I think! This has been a weekend to remember to put it mildly; in fact I might write a book about it. First - my deepest sympathies and prayers to all the people in the areas that have been hit by tornadoes the past two days - Joplin MO, areas in KS, Minneapolis, etc. I can sympathize a little because these storms truly interrupted a LOT. After a glorious wedding in MN of my daughter, we all headed to the airport in Minneapolis Sunday to take our respective flights to OH, several to NY and two of us to KY. Needless to say, everyone's plans were changed rapidly. My flight out of Minneapolis was cancelled after I was up at 4:30 am to make connections. Instead of laying over at O'Hare and on to Louisville; with only minutes to spare and a lot of walking/running/riding, I got on a flight instead to Dallas, TX and then hopefully back to L'ville. Well, I made it to Dallas (one of my old home areas), but saw more of that airport than I really wanted to. I was booted off 3 flights (even with confirmed reservations - weather) and spent a LONG day trying to find a flight back to Louisvillle. Of course, my luggage was already resting comfortably in Louisville, but I was sitting at DFW from 11:30 am until 7:30 last night. Finally, I got on a flight and thought home was nearing closer. Then the tornadoes hit in MO & KS. Some of our wedding party were still stuck in Minneapolis until late last night! We boarded the plane, taxied out to the taxiway ... and sat there for 1 1/2 hours because the airport at DFW was shut down. I do not like sitting in a plane during a tornado warning with lightning hitting all around us, torrential rains and the plane shifting back and forth! We finally took off sometime after ten and the pilot had to fly many directions as storm warnings were issued; if we could have seen the ground I think we went way east, then way north, then circled Stanford Field until we could get clearance to land. We stumbled off after midnight and thankfully I found my missing pull along suitcase with meds I was supposed to take at 6 pm. With the assistance of some dear friends from this list (Thank you!) we reached my car in another town and I hit the road for a 90 minute drive back to Glasgow, getting home at 1:30 this morning. After assuring my cats that it was really me, I sent a few emails to the family and I was out like a light - until the storms hit here at 4 am (not bad). So - if you have written me during my absence, hang in; I likely won't be staying up too long or will be taking a LONG nap. Then tomorrow I have to start packing up the rest of my Mom's house for sale. Until the 18th of June, I might be on hit and miss and I thank you for your patience! Oh - the wedding - a garden wedding - was wondrous, and we all made it to a basement moments later where we huddled together listening to the radio as the storms roared over. What a weekend! Tomorrow - hopefully back to genealogy! Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

Question. Is the Henry Foster in Barren Co., Kentucky the same person as the Henry Foster who later shows up in Giles Co., TN? My problem is that I can’t be absolutely certain if there is just this one Henry Foster or two men of the same name who are about the same age. To put it another way, is the Henry Foster in Giles Co. a son of John Foster and Lucy Smith of Barren Co. or is he a son of Joel Foster and Edy Amos who were next door in Allen Co., KY? There is evidence that seems to support either possibility. Here’s what I’ve been able to find: Barren County, Kentucky land records -- 25 Nov. 1826, Sarah Foster, Paschal Foster, Henry Foster, James & Frances E. Cardin, Thomas & Judith Duncan, John T. Foster, and Francis L. & Mirandy Smith (legatees of John Foster Sr.) to Joseph G. Cockrill, 1826. 25 Nov. 1826, Sarah Foster (/s/ Sally (X) Foster) of Allen Co. KY, Paschal Foster, Henry Foster, James Cardin and wife Frances E., Thomas Duncan and wife Judith, John T. Foster, and Francis L. Smith or his agent and wife Mirandy, of Barren Co. KY, all legatees of John Foster Sr., decd, to Joseph G. Cockrill ... March 1843, decree of Barren Co. circuit court Session. Henry Foster married Susannah Vaughan 25 Dec 1820 in Barren Co. Nottoway Co., Virginia, Deed Book 3 2 Dec 1807 Lucy Foster wife of John Foster relinquishes right of dower . . . Between Burwell P. Foster . . . In witness thereof John Foster, Sr. Paschal Foster Henry Foster Nottoway Court 3 Sept. 1807 Barren Co KY Will Book 3, p. 101 Lucy Foster, 14 March 1831 Probated: November Court 1835 Grandchildren: Lucy Ann, Elisa Jane and Mary William Smith Daughter: Miranda S. Smith Notes held on John Herndon, David Lock, James Hall, William Denton, Samuel Harston [administrator of John Foster Jr, decd] Executor: Son - John T. Foster Witnesses: B Mills Crenshaw, Nathaniel Wheeler, James Wheeler. This would seem to be ironclad proof that this Henry Foster is a son of the John and Lucy Foster mentioned above. But I can find no further mention of Henry or Susannah Foster after 1826. They do not show up in any census record that I can find. If anyone knows more about them please contact me. Digression. My research indicates that John Foster married Lucy Smith, probably in Amelia Co., VA. They moved to Kentucky because of the bounty lands awarded to their deceased relative Ensign Robert Foster’s Revolutionary War Service (His original service records can be viewed on Footnote. They are quite extensive.) As proof of John Foster’s patrimony, I submit the following. For the record, these documents are posted online in various places as well as being available at the LVA. I’ve seen the microfilms and am satisfied with their accuracy. Nottoway Co., Virginia, June 17, 1800 Abraham Foster, and Annas (nee McGehee, my note), his wife, of Prince Edward Co., George Foster and Elizabeth, his wife, of Prince Edward Co., John Foster and Lucy, his wife, of Nottoway Co., Shadrach Holt and Judeah (sp?), his wife, of Nottoway Co., James Fowlkes and Sally, his wife, of Pittsylvania Co., and James Foster, of Daverson [Davidson, my note] Co., Tennessee, to Nathan (Norton?) Dickerson, of Nottoway Co. £300; 226 acres in Nottoway Co. Will of Abraham Foster, Prince Edward Co., VA Nov. 28, 1808, pr. Jan. 16, 1809 Legatees, sons Booker, George, and John Foster Daughters Sally, Betsey, Nelly, Polly and Nancy Foster Executors sons Booker and George and friend Edmond Lockett Witnesses Thomas C. Armstrong, James Dillon, George Foster, Williamson Foster Security Simon Walton, John Clark, Archibald Fuqua, James J. Foster There seems to be some confusion about which John is which. I believe that the John Foster referenced in the 1800 Nottoway land transaction is actually Abraham Foster’s brother, not his son. Abraham Foster’s son John is mentioned in a history of McCracken Co., KY. This John Foster married (1) Mary Hester Walton and (2) Elizabeth Leigh. He died 8 Dec 1874 in McCracken Co. Now, back to the Henry Foster in Giles Co., TN. On the 1840 Giles Co., census a Henry Foster is living next door to Stith Wilson who married Nancy Foster, a daughter of Joel Foster and Edy Amos (Nancy’s relationship is inferred from the 1860 Pope Co., Arkansas census where Eady Foster, then aged 94, is living with her granddaughter Edith Wilson, daughter of Nancy Foster and Stith Meade Wilson. Source Footnote). Giles Co., Tennessee Deeds Henry FOSTER, Entry 102, 29 1/2 A in Rng. 2, Sec. 2, 14th C.D., on Bigby Creek in Giles and Maury Counties, adj. Elizabeth KERK; county line; Calvin COFFY; W. HOLT; Maj. C. HOWELL. Surv. 12 Sep 1844. James GARRIGUS & Stith M. WILSON, C.C. This would seem to be good circumstantial evidence that Henry Foster is a brother of Nancy Foster. So, if the Henry Foster in Giles Co. is not the same one as the one in Barren Co. where was he prior to 1840? I’ve found the following: Arkansas Federal Land Records (Originals can be viewed on the GLO website) Arkansas Co., Arkansas Foster excerpts FOSTER BOOKER 29 4S 2W 160 1820/11/27 FOSTER HENRY 11 5S 5W 160 1821/04/23 FOSTER STEPHEN 19 5S 2W 160 1822/12/23 FOSTER WILLIAM 17 3S 2W 160 1829/01/28 This Henry Foster was awarded bounty lands for his War of 1812 service. He served as a private in Capt. Riddle’s Co., 8th Inf. Reg. This unit was mustered into service in north-central NC and south central VA. It was stationed for a time at Ft. Hawkins, Georgia. There is also a Henry Foster who was on the 1840 tax list for old Carroll Co., Arkansas. At this time Carroll Co. encompassed much of present day NW Arkansas. A Henry Foster married Naticia Cannon on 7 April 1817 in Madison Co., Alabama. Madison Co. is almost due south of Giles Co., TN. My current working hypothesis is that the Henry Foster in Giles Co. is not the same as the one in Barren Co. But there’s still an element of doubt. Was he indeed a son of Joel Foster and Edy Amos and married Naticia (Natasha?) Cannon? Did he live in Alabama and Arkansas for a time before returning to Tennessee? At some point prior to 1850 he moved to Searcy. He is living with a much younger woman named Nancy. Family tradition says she was Nancy Holman and was first married to a John Foster. How this John was related to Henry is a mystery.

I'm not sure when this will go out; my server has been having technical difficulties since yesterday morning and mail is not coming or going. When I return next week, I will likely start up the puzzlers again; this week is a hectic one. So just a little tip. Did you know that witnesses on a document did not have to be a relative of the person signing the document? Many researchers think this is so. On wills; the witnesses who signed usually cannot be heirs or beneficiaries of the will. Some exceptions of course would occur, especially in a "death bed will." The only requirement for a witness is that they had to be of legal age and know the person signing the will. See you tomorrow!
