Hi, I am not certain how to order deeds from KY since I have never ordered anything from Baren County before this. I am looking for a copy of the deed for property that Stephen Wininger bought in Baren County in 1851. I would need to know the address of where the deeds are located. I would also need to know the price for a copy. Thanks for any help that you can give me. Velma [email protected]
I have been told that many years ago in court house records where both surnames of HILL and HITT are found, someone went thru and crossed all the ‘L’s in HILL so they all look like HITT. I believe this was in Culpeper Co, VA. This has been driving researchers crazy ever since. Noting corrections in Ancestry census records does help others. I was helped recently by someone in this same way on Ancestry. Sometimes they are incorrect but at least the correction is not a permanent change.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 2, 2011) - The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) has launched a new database for storing and cataloging object collections which allows many KHS collections to be accessed online. The website is available at www.history.ky.gov/objects. One feature of PastPerfect, the database software, enables viewers to send feedback about artifacts to KHS. Some items have incomplete histories or are of unknown origin, and curators are looking forward to hearing from viewers who may have clues to unearthing the answers to these questions. Online visitors can search by keyword or catalog number, order copies of images, email pages to a friend or search random images just for fun. "This database brings us light-years beyond where we used to be. In the past, museums generally have been hesitant to share their catalogs online, worrying that people wouldn't come anymore," said KHS curator Bill Bright. "But that attitude has changed immensely. We are now making our collections available to a worldwide audience." Currently more than 700 artifacts are entered in the database and available for viewing online. KHS curators are entering new items every day and exporting completed files to the online system weekly. Items already online include the recent "Military Treasures" exhibition, much of the current "Great Revivals" exhibition at the Old State Capitol and all 110 of Paul Sawyier's works in KHS collections. This week, curators are focusing on cataloging Civil War uniforms. To find out more about the new KHS Objects Catalog, contact KHS curator Bill Bright at 502-564-1792, ext. 4476 or [email protected] Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
If I might be so bold as to add something. If your transcribing for a web page, I always make any notations in a different color. For instance, if I find a very obvious misspelling, "teh" instead of "the", I will add the correct spelling in red, or some other different color, in parenthesis. If a letter was left out in the type setting process, "th" instead of "the" for instance, I add the missing letter in a different color. That way it's very obvious that it's not part of the original document. If someone submits a correction I do that in a different color as well, with an attribution to who submitted it. You can't do that as easy for a transcription for print though. Back in the days of manual type setting a lot of silly mistakes happened by accident. The typesetter would transpose letters, leave them out, or just goof up completely. Sometimes when the type was pulled from the plate it got put back in the wrong bin. The next time they needed those letters they just grabbed out of the bin and got the wrong letter. I agree that any transcription should be as accurate as possible to the original document On 06/03/2011 07:52 AM, Sandi Gorin wrote: > Many of us transcribe old records frequently and we try to show the > source just as it is written - spelling errors, date errors and all. > Agreed that it is sometimes difficult to always read the writing or > decipher dates on old faded records. Many of us transcribe old records frequently and we try to show the source just as it is written - spelling errors, date errors and all. Agreed that it is sometimes difficult to always read the writing or decipher dates on old faded records. But, one of the most important things we should do is to transcribe it as it is written. We shouldn't alter the information when we catch an error in the source. As as example: Mary was often known as Polly. If we find a document showing Polly, we might be tempted to change it to Mary .If one source document lists Dickinson and we know it's Dickerson ... we should never change the source. Or - if a place or date of birth is incorrect on one record, we should not change it. That's what the source said. What do you do then? Make a notation or otherwise flag the incorrect data and say how we know it is wrong. Cite a source perhaps, or other evidence that proves it incorrect. Remember that often the clerks - or the individuals themselves - didn't know the correct spelling or date. Many still didn't read or write; or the clerks spelled names as they "heard them." So, never alter source information ... show it as it is and then add your notes. Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

Good morning as I get ready to drive to the bank. Thank you for all your e-mails re my warning ... it seems that quite a few of you have been "taken" by this scam! As a little tip before I leave: What is the difference between a land warrant and a land patent? A warrant normally meant that the individual was entitled to acreage of property without giving any real indication of where the property is located. They were just entitled to land. Most of these were awarded for military service. In The Revolutionary War, land in what became Kentucky was warranted to its soldiers and officers "south of the Green River" and in other locations. A land patent is the transference of a title on a specific piece of property to an individual. Sandi

Gone are the days when we can trust people all the time. I have just been scammed in an expensive way and this is to give you a heads-up. After restoring my system by my excellent computer repairman (who came over on a holiday), I thought I needed to put something out for all of you. I am not a dummy when it comes to computers and this totally tricked me to the tune of $59.95 which hopefully I can stop by being at the bank at its opening in the morning. I was typing away on e-mails Sunday after church. All of a sudden I get this full-screen message that my system was in peril - and it started running a scan. The scan looked & acted like the typical scan that my virus program uses. It showed 25 critical hacking attacks and my data was at risk. I was then taken to a page that only allowed me to do one thing - order the "full version" of the Microsoft program - for $59.95. I could not get to the web; my page would come up and in a millisecond the "virus program" screen appeared. Although I was told that I could proceed to another web site, it wouldn't let me. It had taken over my entire system. I tried to back out and go to the desktop (succesfully), but lo and behold my virus programs were disabled. Finally, in desperation - and stupidly so, I gave them my credit card information and ordered the program thinking this was a new way of hacking my system that my virus programs hadn't caught and the screen stated that it had been received and that the program was now taking care of and removing all the trojans, viruses, etc. I was to be sent an e-mail with the activation code - which of course never came. The 60-digit number I was instructed to write down - didn't work. My e-mail to support - never worked. So, I hooked up my old lap top and did a search for the program. Yes ... it was a trojan itself and difficult to remove. I shut the system down and this morning called SKCPR who does my computer work. He got it off rapidly .... he had expected it to be a lot worse. He indicated that this particular "company" has been hitting a LOT of computers; mine was far from the first. It can spread throughout one's system rapidly, but thankfully, I had shut down and it appears to have done no more damage. In the morning, I need to be at the bank at 8 with a letter of what happened and a print out of their site to see if they can, in their fraud department, stop the charge from going through. This is not meant as a "poor me" e-mail but informational. The name of the program is XP Total Security 2011. You can do a search for it on the web and see what they do and the thousands or more dollars they are raking in. As Michael Richey from SKCPR told me ... if you get a pop-up like this, don't send them money! Legit pop-ups don't do this. Be careful ... I should have checked the program out on my laptop first ... but I was trusting. Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
